Now is enough

Now is enough

You smelt the freshly mowed grass mixed with the scent of little buttercups as a soft breeze slid past your exposed legs. It was a sunny spring day and you were wearing your favorite yellow dress.  You had your eyes closed and listened to the sound of Jongin’s heart with your head on his chest. He was humming a song you didn’t know when he suddenly stopped and softly kissed the crown of your head.

‘I’m happy.’ He said before he started caressing the back of your arm.

You opened your eyes to see Jongin’s bright smile. He still had his sunglasses on so you carefully took them off before you swiftly kissed him on the lips.

‘These look better on me.’ You teased as you put the sunglasses on and sat cross-legged next to Jongin. He leaned on his elbow and supported his head with his hand as he lay in the bright green grass. You were all alone at your favorite little field right behind your house. It wasn’t very remote, but there didn’t seem to be a lot of people who knew about it. You had only once seen an elderly couple there, so you liked to call it your secret place.

‘You’re right, they do look better on you. Keep them.’

‘What? No, I was just kidding. Here take it back.’ You said and you placed the sunglasses in the neckline of his white V-neck.

Jongin didn’t say anything; he just kept smiling at you.

‘What is it?’ you said after you started to feel just a tiny bit uncomfortable.

‘I just think I’m really lucky.’ Jongin said. He sat up straight and started gathering the buttercups next to you. ‘I love you and you actually love me back. There are a lot of people who never get to experience such a thing, I just think I’m lucky that I have found you.’

You couldn’t stop yourself and jumped at him, he fell with his back against the grass with a hard thud and you wrapped your arms around his neck. His eyes grew wide of surprise, but then relaxed when he felt the familiar weight of your body on his.

‘I’m really lucky too, you know.’ You whispered in his ear.

The day you met was a complete opposite of today. It was raining or actually storming back then and most of the people in town were wise enough to stay at home with the windows shut, not you of course. You had to walk home all alone in the rain, because your parents weren’t at home and nobody could pick you up after work. You didn’t dislike your work at the local video store, but on days like this you would complain about just about anything. And so you kept on walking, trying your best to not let your already broken umbrella be blown away by the icy wind. Everything seemed to go according to plan until you felt something tall and hard push you from behind. You dropped the umbrella and it was blown out of sight before you knew it. The cold rain poured right on to you and you were soaked within minutes.

‘Sorry.’ A breathless voice said behind you. You turned around, ready to shout and ready to be angry, but you couldn’t help but stare for a second. Right in front of you was an almost model-like boy, he looked about your age and he was breathing heavily.

You opened your mouth to say something, but then the boy’s eyes grew wider. He heard a bunch of people scream in the background, followed by footsteps splashing through the rain puddles. He put his hand over your mouth and pulled you into a small and empty book store. The lady behind the cash register was busy behind her computer and she didn’t respond to your frightened looks as the boy dragged you behind a large bookcase. You tried to free yourself from his hold, but the boy was too strong. After the group of people, or girls as they appeared to be, had run past the bookstore, the boy finally relaxed and let go of you.

‘I’m really sorry.’ He said still a little bit out of breath. ‘But I couldn’t risk you screaming or they would find me.’

You didn’t understand the situation. Were you supposed to scream? Who was this boy, some kind of criminal?

‘Let me make it up to you, do you want an autograph?’

You started laughing, this kid must be joking.

‘Seriously? You basically kidnapped me in here, why would I want your autograph?’ You said rather hysterically.

‘Wait, you don’t know who I am?’

‘I don’t even care, what I do care about is my umbrella. How am I supposed to get home in this weather? You have to buy me a new one.’

The boy laughed. ‘Sure, I can do that.’ He walked towards the entrance of the book store and looked around to make sure the street was empty. When he was sure the coast was clear, he signed for you to follow him. He was already halfway across when he noticed that you were still standing in the doorway of the book store. You really didn’t feel like going through the rain again. So he ran back towards you and took of his bright yellow cardigan. You were a little bit surprised when he held it above your head with an encouraging smile on his face, but you didn’t hesitate any longer and before you knew it you were in a different store on the other side of the street. They were playing a song you heard on the radio before. It always made you laugh how one of the singers would sing “histoly” instead of history and that day was no exception. The boy looked at you cautiously. You frowned and gave him a questioning look, but he just waved it away and walked towards an umbrella stand in the corner of the store.

‘So what color do you want?’ He asked.

‘Yellow.’ You answered immediately.

He chuckled a little before he took out a light yellow umbrella and headed for the cash register, but it didn’t took long for him to come back you. His cheeks were a little red and he was scratching the back of his head.

‘I have a little problem.’ He said as he stared at the ground before you. ‘I just found out that I lost my wallet.’

‘Really?’ you said in disbelieve.

‘Yeah, it must have fallen out of my back pocket when I was running away from the… oh crap.’

The boy got a terrified look on his face. You turned around to see what scared him that much when you saw a dozen or so teenage girls pointing at the both of you.

‘Omg, there he is!’ One of the girls squealed.

Everything went incredibly fast after that.

The boy grabbed your wrist and pulled you to the back of the store, past the angry looking store manager, through the door that said Staff only. You didn’t think that the boy knew where he was going, so you pulled him to your left to the emergency exit. You were out in the pouring rain again and still lacking of an umbrella, but you didn’t mind that much anymore. Running alongside this stranger while he held your wrist in his warm hands did strange things to your heart. You both heard the screams of the girls again in the distance and you both started running faster. Suddenly the boy pulled you to his right. He jumped into somewhere and you followed him blindly. When your feet touched the ground again you felt wet sand beneath you. You were at the beach. The boy put a finger at his lips to silence you and together you listened to the footsteps of the group of girls who ran past you on the boardwalk. When you both were sure they were gone the boy relaxed again. It had almost stopped raining, but you were still wet and cold. Your teeth were chattering.

‘I’m sorry for all that.’ The boy said. ‘I really wanted to buy you that umbrella.’

‘That’s okay, I guess. It wouldn’t have survived this weather anyway.’

‘If you give me your name and address I can send one to you.’ The boy took out his phone, but it was soaked, just like the rest of his clothes, and it didn’t seem to work anymore.

‘That .’ You said at a loss of words. The boy looked up from his phone and stared at you for a couple of seconds, before he burst into laughter.

‘You can say that again!’

You laughed with him; this day couldn’t get any crazier.

‘I’m curious.’ You said after a while. ‘Why were those girls following you? You’re not famous or something right?’

‘Something like that.’ The boy answered.

‘Really? No way, you are?’

‘Yeah, I’m in a group. We just debuted. My name is Kai.’ The boy extended his hand, but you didn’t shake it right away.

‘Kai? Is that your real name?’

‘No, it’s Jongin.’

‘Oh, well nice to meet you Jongin. You know what; I would really like that umbrella.’

You looked through your purse; luckily it was made out of plastic, so everything in it was still dry. You took out a pen and a piece of paper and wrote down your name and address.

‘Here, I’m looking forward to receiving that umbrella and don’t even think about getting me a different one. I want that yellow one.’ You said playfully and with that you walked away. Jongin really seemed like a nice guy to you, but after experiencing a little part of his life, you realized that someone as famous as he would never have time for you. It was best to just let him be.

A week later he proved you wrong. It was a rainy day again and you decided to stay at home for the day, eat some popcorn, wear your pajamas all day, maybe watch some movies. You had just started with the first movie when the doorbell rang. A little annoyed, you climbed down the stairs to answer the door. The first thing that cached your eye was a light yellow umbrella, but you got even more excited when you saw the person holding it.

‘Hello.’ Jongin said, a bright smile on his face. ‘Nice to see you again, I like the pajamas.’

You felt a little embarrassed at first when you noticed you wore your bunny pajamas, but you really didn’t care, because Jongin was standing at your door.

‘Hey.’ you said surprised.

‘Here is the umbrella like I promised.’ Jongin said. ‘But I didn’t bring a spare one for myself so do you mind if I hide here until the rain passes.’

‘S…sure.’ You stumbled.

‘Great, I could show you some clips of the group I’m in. It’s really a shame you’ve never heard of us.’

‘Okay, that’d be nice.’ You said. Of course you had googled Jongin, or Kai, the moment you got home last week. But you figured that it would be best to keep that a secret.

And that is how you met Jongin. The boy who’s warm body was lying underneath you between the buttercups at the secret field behind your house.

‘I’m sorry, though.’ Jongin said after a short blissful moment of silence.

‘Why?’ You asked. You looked up at his face and noticed how he was frowning like he always did when he thought of something important.

‘I’m sorry that we have to keep us a secret. I know you don’t like it, and it kills me too.’

‘Oh, that’s okay. We know, our friends know and our parents know. For now that’s enough for me.’

Kai started your back. He slowly went up and down your spine as he thought about something.

‘Yeah, for now it may be enough, but you’re going to want more in the future. I know I will.’

‘Maybe I will, but for now it really makes me happy to hear you describe me every time they ask who your ideal type is in interviews. ’

You felt Jongin’s body shake underneath you. His laughter sounded like perfection to you ears.

‘You’ve noticed?’ He asked when he was able to speak again.

‘Of course I have.’

‘Well, alright then, but just so you know, I’m planning on becoming more to you than just your boyfriend in the future. So please have just a little bit more patient and don’t give in to love declarations you get from the boy next door. I’ve seen the way he looks at you.’

‘Don’t worry Mr. Jelly, I’m only interested in you. You know, I still use that umbrella you bought me a year ago. It’s a miracle it hasn’t broken yet considering the weather we get here. ’

‘It must be a sign.’ Jongin said and his lips touched yours. ‘We belong together.’

You couldn’t help but smile as he continued to kiss you and you felt that he was doing the same. You were happy, the both of you and that was enough for now.
