Trick

Trick

Luhan cursed under his breath as he was waiting among a crowd of people at the airport. He flipped over the board in his hand to read what was written there again.

Kris/ Wu Yi Fan

What the hell is this?

He wrinkled his nose in annoyance. So apparently the boy couldn’t choose between two names so he just let everyone call whatever they were pleased with or he had been abroad for a long time, his parents were afraid he already forgot what his birth name was. Luhan couldn’t tell which one was the main reason why there was a slash on the board but that was none of his business anymore. The fact that he had to stop his current database reviewing of last year campaign, drove at a stretch to the airport to pick up CEO’s son was enough for him to be grumpy at whoever bumped into him on the hallway.

Even though he was working in the head office as Marketing Director’s assistant, everyone knew that Mr. Wu had a liking for him. But it didn’t mean that he had to be the one who accompanied him to his golf practice or bought him a cup of coffee from Starbuck every morning. And right where he thought was the bottom line of being someone who ran errands, he had been called into the CEO’s office and asked to be a personal driver three hours ago.

The arrival announcement from the loudspeaker snapped him out of his misery. Luhan his hair a bit to make the best appearance. After all this was the CEO’s son and it wouldn’t kill anyone to have good first impression on him.

The crowd began to push up a little when people are walking through the entrance. Luhan yelped painfully as someone elbowed him at his hip, turned his head aside irritatingly to find the culprit. To his dismay, there was a chaos behind and by the time he spun back to the front, his head bumped into something.

Someone’s chest to be exact.

“Hi, I’m Kris.”

The stranger took off his black glasses, squinted at him waiting for response but Luhan just stood there, mouth hang open without a word coming out. Not until the stranger waved his hand vigorously in front of him did Luhan blink several times to get himself together.

“Wh…what?” he uttered

“I’m Kris.” the taller male chuckled, pointed the board in his hand “You’re supposed to pick me up right?”

Still seemed like he was falling from the sky, Luhan swallowed whatever stuck in his throat nervously, sputtering

“Oh…right.” he tied himself into knots, stepped aside to give Kris instruction “Er…this way please.”

What’s wrong with you? Get a hold on yourself!

Luhan groaned inwardly while escorting Kris to his car but couldn’t stop himself from stealing countless glances over his shoulder at the younger male. He was tall, a little skinny and didn’t look like a Chinese at all. Maybe many years living across the ocean made him different from what Luhan had expected. But nothing mattered right now because oh God he was so gorgeous. Luhan didn’t know someone could be that handsome and chic like the human being walking behind him.

Kris was proved to be not a talkative type since Luhan tried to make a conversation here and there but it turned out mostly just one question – one answer.

“How long have you stayed in America?”

“Eight years.”

Wow

“You must miss your family like hell while staying there alone.”

“Not really.”

He’s a tough guy.

“What were you studying back then?”

“MBA”

Smart too

“What occasion do you come home?”

“To get married”

Uh oh….

Luhan completely shut up his mouth after that question, let silence ade the air around them.

Sensing the sudden awkwardness they gave each other, Kris finally looked up from his phone and pulled out an unreadable smirk. It just happened a second before he cleared his throat to pull the latter’s attention.

“Err, drop me at the Grand Hotel!”

Luhan peered at him in surprise through the rearview mirror

“Aren’t you supposed to….”

His voice trailed off as the pierce look which was beaming at him clearly saying “that’s none of your concern”.

The slam of the car door was a bit harsh to Luhan’s opinion but he couldn’t care more as the taller male bended down to knock on his window. Scrolling down the glass, he didn’t have time to ask what was wrong when Kris handed him a little card and leaned in too close for his own good.

“Thanks for the ride baby face. Call me if you get any trouble.”

With that he his heels and walked toward the entrance, leaving a particular boy dumbfounded. Luhan swore his heart had never been racing that fast before. And did Kris just tell him to call? Did he just flirt? Wait, he’s going to get married for the love of God!

Luhan looked down on the card in his hand which he now noticed was laminated. It took him a long minute to comprehend what was printed there.

OH SEHUN

Party planner

And another second to press the accelerator pedal, driving back to the airport even though he knew it’s too late.

***********

“I’m so dead.”

Luhan dropped his on the wheeled chair, jerked his head back and groaned in frustration. Across the room, Yixing carelessly shrugged, focused on searching for his file. Holding a red folder against his chest, he kicked the base of the chair, motioned the latter to get off.

“Okay, off! I have work to do.”

Luhan pouted, lazily got up and plopped down on another chair on the other side of the table.

“You can’t shed a tear for my misery can you?”

His colleague shot him an unbelievable glare before glued his eyes back to the document in front

“You said you’re dead like hundreds times already and yet I’m not invited to your funeral. Plus you’re going to have a two-week vacation. If you’re dead, I really wonder why.”

The latter gave Yixing a sideways look before closed his eyes, recalled what had happened since yesterday. So instead of picking up his boss’s son, he had been tricked and then gave a stranger named Oh-freaking-Sehun a free ride to his hotel. But that was not the main point. The weirdest thing was when he used the given card as a proof and tried to explain the whole situation to Mr. Wu and his real son, Kris, who by the way had to take a taxi straight to his father’s company, they just exchanged unreadable looks and sent him back to work without a complaint.

Then he was called in again and entrusted with another importu task: assisting Kris prepare for his wedding in the next two weeks. Within 24 hours there were so many things happened out of his experience of twenty-seven-year living that he hardly had time to function them all.

“What I don’t understand is how you didn’t recognize him in the first place.”

Yixing’s voice snapped him back to the earth. Actually he had asked himself that question over and over again but the answer was always the same.

“How was I supposed to know? I never meet him before.”

“You know he is Chinese right?” his friend arched brow suspiciously

“But he did speak Chinese!” Luhan protested, tried to convince mostly to himself that the mistake he had made could happen to anybody.

Yixing rolled his eyes at the childish reason, losing his urge to argue back. Then he spotted a laminated card on the edge of the table, reached out to pick it up curiously.

“Oh Sehun?”

He spoke out loud and in a split of second, he thought Luhan was glaring at him with anger. The younger male sighed in relief as he realized that lazer was actually for the poor card in his hand instead.

Luhan grinded his teeth, his fist clenched into white knuckle

“That name will be the death of me. I swear if I ever see him again, I make sure he’ll never want to come back China again.”

He said it with so much determination and faith in himself.

**********

It’s such a small world.

Later that day, Luhan found himself standing in the same room with the one he claimed not long ago the death of him and he choked on his saliva because oh God he forgot how gorgeous that boy was.

“Luhan ge” Kris called him after having a short conversation on the phone “I believe you remember Sehun.”

Luhan swallowed thick, nodded his head in response.

Kris chuckled, noticing the tension on the latter’s face

“He is my wedding planner. Since he insists you to help him with the preparation, I think you two should meet and have a proper greeting.”

However, instead of saying a proper hello, Luhan tilted his head and narrowed his eyes in confusion

“Why me?”

Kris looked dumbfounded for a second before darted his eyes to Sehun waiting for answer because he himself wanted to ask that question too.

The Korean boy shrugged his shoulder, stated as if it was the matter of fact

“Because I like you.”

“W…what?” Luhan choked out, almost bit on his tongue

Sehun calmly stepped toward him until they were just inch apart. It’s so close that Luhan could inhale the younger’s cologne.  Sandalwood and blueberry.

“You heard me.” Sehun emphasized every word “Because I like you.”

Luhan was sure he looked like a fish, no an ugly frightened fish, right now because his jaw was dropped and his eyes couldn’t get any bigger at this confession.

But Sehun didn’t seem to mind at all. He stood straight, hands in pocket, chin lifted up with a smirk at the corner of his lips.

“Any more question? No? Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow at 9. Kris, let’s go. I want to talk to you more about the ceremony.”

With that he walked pass a still-shocking Luhan out of the door. Kris sent his sympathy to the older one through a pat on his shoulder, mumbled something like “He’s just joking” before following Sehun but Luhan seemed to be somewhere else but the earth.

Maybe it’s true.

Maybe Sehun was the death of him and now he was in heaven.

***********

It turned out Sehun was just joking, or at least Luhan started to believe there was no way that boy had such feeling for him.

“Why did you pretend to be Kris?”

Luhan asked when they were waiting for the caterer three days after their first meeting.

Still glued his eyes on the menu, Sehun answered plainly

“Because I charged him a very reasonable price, I guess I could use one of his advantages.”

But then he looked to meet the latter’s level, scanned him from head to toe before dropped back his attention to the paper in his hand

“But mostly because you looked so clueless, I think I could have some fun. And I did have fun.”

Luhan wanted to smack the younger one right hard on the head.

***********

The moment he woke up, he knew he couldn’t survive through a day. His tooth was hurt like hell causing headache and also slight fever. Crawling out of bed to the bathroom, Luhan almost screamed as he touched his swollen cheek, his face was twisted in pain.

Should I call?

He looked at his reflection in the mirror then shook his head as if he was talking to himself.

It’s better to tell him in person.

Sehun welcomed him with a not very happy face and a phone stuck between his ear and shoulder. The younger one wagged his finger to motion him come in and turned away to continue his on-going conversation.

Luhan closed the door and took a look around. Normally, he just waited down at the lobby so basically this was his first time here. The room was neat and clean, smelled blueberry. Like Sehun.

“I’ll change this shirt and we can go.”

Sehun said with his back still facing him.

“Wait” Luhan called out, stood up from the chair “I have a tooth…”

He was cut off by a ringing from Sehun’s phone. The younger looked at the screen and held up his hand

“Just a second”

Luhan nearly jumped out of his skin few seconds later when he heard Sehun yelling at the person on the other side of the line.

“I don’t care. In fact I don’t care if it’s YOU who dying. I want the ice sculpture be there at 4p.m. Sharp time. And oh, don’t you dare challenge me because I will go and get it myself if I have to. But that also means you’re a dead meat!”

Luhan didn’t realize that he had been holding both hands up against his chest (and also his breath), looking dazed for the whole time. So if someone’s death wasn’t that important then how came his physical situation be a reason to have a day off?

Sehun turned to his side, remembered they were in middle of something. His voice was still a bit upset resulted from his bad mood

“You were saying?”

Everything Luhan had written in his head earlier was completely erased by one shaking head along with a mumble “nothing”. He would rather suffer the pain than got scolded like that poor person a minute ago.

However, running around Beijing with Sehun was not an easy job. The big day was just three days away and being a perfectionist, Sehun wanted everything to be flawless. That was why he did the preparation almost by himself, from picking the flower to supervising the decoration.

On the other hand, Luhan’s only task was just to drive him to wherever he asked, sometimes gave comments here and there. He wondered why Sehun needed him to be with anyway because the younger had no difficulty doing the job alone but he didn’t ask. He didn’t want to.

Luhan could feel a little dizzy and his head was burning like hell when they were at the church. He had to lean back on the edge of the door frame to stop himself from falling down. But it seemed like he failed at pretending to be fine because one moment he was stood at the door, the next thing he saw when opened his eyes was the ceiling of his room.

My room??

He sat up like a spring, too fast for his condition. Wrong move.

It took him few minutes to get his balance. The room was quiet as usual but Luhan knew someone had been here not long ago. Someone smelled like sandalwood and blueberry.

On the table in the kitchen, there was a bowl of soup which was still hot along with a note which he recognized right away belonged to the notebook Sehun always carried with him.

This is all I can find in your fridge. Seriously, you need to go shopping for groceries.

Eat, take medicines and rest, I don’t want Kris accuse me of exploiting his father’s favorite employee.

I’ll see you at the wedding.

P/S. You should find a new place to hide your key too baby face.

Luhan couldn’t help but grinning like an idiot before blushed in deep color of rose when he realized his clothes was changed. Almost completely.

*********

The wedding could be described in one word: perfection, just like Sehun planned it to be. He stood from behind, looking Kris smiling happily while waiting for his bride walking down to the aisle. He didn’t try to hold back his grin as the feeling of contentedness spread all over his body and his eyes automatically scanned around the room to find a particular honey brown head.

He had spent four years of his life making plan for other people’s biggest day but never once did he think about how he’s going to remark his own day. The word wedding freaked him out. That’s why he called himself a “party planner”. But now he could tell something had changed inwardly and he believed it’s right time for him to draw his picture.

Luhan didn’t feel good at all. Maybe he drank a little too much. Or maybe he just saw how Sehun became so talkative around the bride’s sisters and a wave of jealousy hit him. The balcony was decorated with lilies and red ribbon tied around.

So classic.

He chuckled as taking another sip on his wine. He heard the door behind him clicked open but didn’t even bother to turn around because whoever came here would have to deal with a tipsy Luhan.

“Why are you here all alone, baby face?”

This voice.

Oh, how Luhan knew this voice so well and how he hated it.

“Why do you care?” he snapped back harshly.

Sehun made few steps forward, his head tilting a bit in confusion

“Are you okay? You look….drunk.”

To his surprise, the latter just burst out laughing for no reason then stared at him coldly

“It’s none of your business. Leave me alone.”

The Korean male tried not to be pissed off at that rudeness because he needed to talk to Luhan right now, whether the boy was sober or not. His flight was tomorrow and he’s not going to waste time on arguing with the other.

“Can we find somewhere else to talk?”

He grabbed the older one’s wrist but was yanked off a second after that.

“What do you want?” Luhan let out a muffled sigh, the alcohol started to kick in and absorb all his energy.

Sehun closed his eyes to gain all the strength

“I want to talk about us.”

“Us? There’s no us.” Luhan suddenly raised his voice, swung his arms with glass of wine in hand toward to door, making the red liquid spill over the floor “See, your girlfriend is looking for you. Go talk to her. I have nothing to do with you.”

He mumbled the last part, his head lowered down as he felt really sleepy. Meanwhile, Sehun had no idea what the latter was talking about. He kept looked back and forth a few times before dropped his eyes on the Chinese male, trying again to make a proper conversation.

“Look, baby face, I….”

“Stop calling me baby face.” Luhan literally screamed “My name is Luhan. LUHAN, you hear me. LU….phmmm”

Then all Luhan could hear at that time was the glass shattered on the stony floor and his own heart beating loudly inside his chest as Sehun crashed their lips together to make him shut up. They pulled apart before he could even function what had happened but there one thing he knew for sure that from now on he was totally awake.

“God, how much wine did you drink?” Sehun grimaced but his hands still reached out to grab the other’s wrist.

“Look, I don’t know why you kept asking me stupid questions because I think I made it quite clear from the beginning that I like you. But since you look like you don’t have a clue, I will say it again. I like you, very much. Will you be my boyfriend?”

He waited patiently for Luhan to respond but all he got was just the older one’s staring. He wondered if Luhan was even listening to him or not because his big doe-like eyes were so blank whereas his face showed an emotionless expression.

“Hey” Sehun shook his arm to snap him back “This is the part when you say yes I will or I’m sorry I can’t”

“I’m…” Luhan blinked, still looked bewildered but he managed to loosen the grip and murmured “I’m sorry… I can’t. I….I got to go.”

With that he ran past the younger one who rooted into his spot.

How Sehun wished he had stopped at the part yes I will.

**********

The airport was a little bit deserted at 6 a.m. Sehun sat cross-legged in the waiting area. He had changed his flight in the last minute, making a mental note not to come back China ever again. He checked his phone to see it still had 15 minutes before the boarding time so he lazily stood up, looked around to find a place selling coffee. He had to keep himself fully awake since every time he closed his eyes, trying to sleep, the image of Luhan last night would pop up in his head and made his heart twisted.

That was why when he saw a baby face with messy hair and breath in short pants standing in front of him, he had to rub his eyes to make sure he wasn’t dreaming.

“How…”

“Kris told me.” Luhan smiled tenderly “He’s such a good friend.”

Sehun averted his eyes from the latter, plopped down into the chair nearby

“What are you doing here?”

“I come to see you.” Luhan sheepishly admitted, playing with the hem of his shirt “to explain.”

“Explain what?” the younger retorted “Didn’t you sound very clear last night?”

“No, no, you got it all wrong.”

Luhan waved his hands vigorously, moved closer to the latter before took a seat beside

“It came out all sudden with the kiss and then you confessed but all I could think was how came kissing a person so sweet like that and then you asked me if I say yes. I was freaked out. I need more air to breathe so…When I came back you’ve already gone and you turned off your phone too. I couldn’t reach you.”

He cried out in one go, afraid if he stopped in the middle, he wouldn’t have enough courage to continue.

“So what you meant before was….”

“Yeah, I’m sorry, I can’t breathe. I got to go.”

Sehun facepalmed himself in disbelief, didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry. They stayed silent for a long minute before Luhan spoke up first, a little hesitantly because after all, he was the one who caused this misunderstanding.

“So now, where are we?”

The boarding call out of nowhere cut off the tension between them. The Korean boy suddenly looked up, his eyes was filled with determination

“Give me your skype name.”

Luhan was startled a bit, jerked his head back questioningly

“Wh…what for?”

“How do you expect us to remain a long distance relationship without talking to each other?”

Sehun stated it as a matter of fact, earning an ear-to-ear grin and a tight hug from the latter before he closed their space by a chaste kiss, promised to call Luhan as soon as he landed.

**********

“Luhan?”

“Huh?”

“When are we going to have a chat?”

“………”

“No? Okay, let’s just talk then ^-^”
