Spring Wind
Kaze Haru

Spring, First Day
of all the weird conversations Jessica had with anyone in Japan, the weirdest was
with Heechul, a senior college student in Tokyo U. He sits beside her one boring
class day and started blurting out his theories of soulmates and fates. They were in
Japanese History, and if it weren't for the monotonous lecture of her professor, she
wouldn't have had chosen to listen to Heechul.
Eventhough Heechul flew back in Korea after being held back a semester for failing
the very course he disturbed her for, his crazy theory stuck with Jessica. It was plain
stupid, she knows that all too well, but now it does seem to make sense--in its own,
peculiar way.
The stupid theory was, when a soul is divided in two and sent to the world, both of
them would be in constant search of the other. They should find one another and
make the soul into one again.
But most often, the soul finds another that is almost identical to its true other half,
and they fall in love and get together and he lives and dies thinking he has found his
real pair, leaving the other half alone with a soul forever incomplete.
Such brought chaos and broken relationships and so to guide the souls back to their
right partner, God instructed His angels to create a sign, something that would signal
the two souls, so that when they meet, they would know.
The angels, being creative (and a bit playful), used the seasons and the elements:
one soul would symbolize a season, the other an element, and on the moment of their
fateful meeting, the whole Earth would tell them who they are supposed to be.

It has never happened before, Jessica is sure of it since she only met a handful of
people (being the antisocial that she is), but it happened today.
Before leaving Japan, Heechul left her a few words, "You are the wind, Jessica." And
since then, she has always believed so. It rung truth in some ways. She was really like
the wind--unseen but felt, comes and goes as pleased, destructive yet valuable--a big
contradiction such as herself.
Also since then, whenever she meets someone new, she would make them pick if they
were a season or an element, and ask which do they think they are. She's met two
people so far, both chose an element: Seohyun chose the snow and Jonghyun the sky.
Today was the first day of spring and whenever it was the first day of a season, Jessica
had her heart pounding. What if on this day she meets the season she was meant to be
with? Soon after she curses Heechul for turning her into a mad woman.
"Kaze... haru?"
She raises her head and looks to the left where the voice came from. There was a guy
standing beside her, black hair fashioned neatly, turtle neck, small eyes, shy poker-face.
He eyes the book on her hand, a book on Kanji writing, opened on the page on how to
write seasons.
Jessica breaks from her reverie, looks at the page she had unknowingly been staring at
for some time now, back into the guy who seemed to want the book, closes the book and
hands it over. She looks as he quietly gives his thanks, turns and walks away.
She just stares into his back as he walks farther. Outside is a strong blow of wind that
suddenly rushed by, trees swaying, flowers dancing, sun shining brightly between the
merriment of the clouds.
...something that would signal the two souls, so that when they meet, they would know.
She just knows.
One soul would symbolize a season, the other an element, and on the moment of their
fateful meeting, the whole Earth would tell them who they are supposed to be.
Today was the first day of Spring.
