ESCAPE

Description

I can no longer feel anything.

The pain that was surrounding my abdomen had slowly blurred, leaving me with a feeling of detachment from this  weak, tired and injured body.

I can hardly feel the hard ground on which I have fallen upon,

I can hardly feel the tears falling from my  fatigued eyes,

I no longer feel my immobile and broken body,

All I can do is try to muster what's left of my sanity to concentrate my senses on the small hand, rested on my cheek, of my sister who took her firsts steps towards me.

Knowing that we would never walk together,

Take those first steps together,

Live a new life, a new dream forever,

Never.

Because this is our ESCAPE.

Foreword

Camp 14. Only one of many of North Korea's prisons. When someone was accused of "having ideas that could potentially be of some threat to the great nation's safety", they were sent there. Oh, but it wasn't only one person. It was his parents, siblings, wife, children and sometimes grandparents too. Obviously, they were as guilty as the culprit was. North Korea denied having these camps, but the United States believe more than 1000 people were restrained in each one and knew of their existence, though it was denied. Every camp was like a small village, except "villagers" were guarded by soldiers who weren't there to protect them, but to make sure they never ran away... No matter what. They didn't actually care if anyone escaped, the point was to make sure everyone knew that they could not run away from North Korea's power and that anyone who tried would be punished... By death. People had learned to live for themselves, children had learned to tattle on others to gain a measly prize, be it a little more food or a used sweater to keep them a bit warmer at night.

Soldiers could beat up anyone they thought fit, and were common as well. Of course, they became soldiers for the money and for the safety, though soldiers themselves were sometimes tortured to remind them of their place in the unfounded hierarchy. They made everyone come to see the public executions, making the so-called traitors become examples to whoever had the slightest doubt about North Korea's political choices. Public executions weren't any more glorious either. The culprit would have his hands tied with a cloth behind a large pole,on top of a wooden platform where everyone could see him. Rocks would be shoved in his mouth to keep him from saying any profanities and to keep the screaming to a minimum. Sometimes, his eyes were covered, sometimes they were not, as the soldiers raised their guns at him and shot. Leaving him there for a while for everyone to witness and accept as their destiny. Many who came found the culprit stupid for trying to go against North Korea, that fool should have kept quiet.

This was a reality they had all lived with, and they were fine with it as long as they could live. Camp 14 was the closest one to the border between China and North Korea, but even if you were lucky enough to escape and cross the border, China would inform the authorities and send you back to your awaiting death.

Park Jonghyun was 16 when his parents were arrested. They were not poor and his parents had a small place in the political department so the government decided to send them in Camp 14. Why was his parents, sweet and loving people, being taken to this gruesome place? Simply because there were rumours that they were involved in some meetings with other people who were talking ill of the country's laws. Of course, such meetings were a sign of rebellion. I mean, how dare such people question this great nation, the chosen nation? Rebellion meant an uproar. An uproar lead to a revolution. A revolution would be dangerous for the nation's and the population's safety. Thus, these people were a threat to the country itself. So, they did what they always did; they took Jonghyun's parents, Jonghyun himself, his little brother, Kibum, little sister, Sora, as well as his grandmother and  emprisoned them to the concentration camp, Camp 14.

Today, Jonghyun is 17 years old. His parents had been tortured numerous times during the part year and his twin siblings were now two years old. Today, is his parents' execution. And today would be the day he decided to ESCAPE.

...But how?
