Foreword

He’s not sure where he is or how he got there, but his vision is fuzzy and he can’t really remember what had happened. He starts walking around, and the more he looks around, the clearer his vision became. He found himself in the local park, still unsure of what he was doing there. Not giving much thought to it, he thought he’d might as well walk around since he’s already there. He sits on a bench, taking in the sight of the green surrounding him and some children running around. He smiles a bit, turning his head and looking around the park. He notices a figure with his back turned to him, dark-haired and thin. He quickly recognizes the figure as his boyfriend. A little spark of excitement ignites in his stomach, and he smiles to himself almost immediately. That is, until he notices him with someone else. He quirks an eyebrow, his smile fading as he tilts his head to the side, examining the scene. He realizes his boyfriend is kissing someone else, an unfamiliar girl a bit smaller than him. He feels his eyes watering and all he wants to do is get up and leave. But his feet have a mind of their own, it seems, and they’re walking towards the two. As he approaches them, he’s starting to feel more upset; the image of them starting to burn into his mind.

But he can’t seem to speak at all at first.

“W-Woohyun?” His voice comes out quiet and shaky, only now realizing he had been crying the entire time. The other male snaps his head back from the kiss, turning towards the crying figure and blinking a few times.

“Sungyeol—”

“What are you doing?” Sungyeol raises his voice a bit this time, hurt evident in it. His eyes flicker toward the girl, who has an eyebrow raised and looks completely confused. The other boy, Woohyun, looks toward the girl then back at Sungyeol. He sighs heavily.

“Look, Yeol, we need to talk,” Woohyun looks straight into the other’s eyes this time, causing something inside Sungyeol to make him twitch. He gulps and blinks his eyes a few times.

“Well.. You’re the one who has some explaining to do…” Sungyeol’s voice trails off; he wants to sound more firm than he actually does, but he can’t help it.

“Yeah.” Woohyun looks at the girl and tells her he’ll explain everything to her later. She stares at him for a moment before walking away.

Woohyun takes Sungyeol’s hand in his for a moment, but then decides to let it go. He beckons him to sit down, and so he does. They both sit quiet for a moment before Sungyeol is the first to speak up.

“I thought…I thought you didn’t like girls.” Sungyeol whispers slowly. Woohyun looks at him with a blank expression for a moment before shaking his head.

“Yeah, turns out I do.” He grins at himself for a moment, but Sungyeol isn’t laughing. Why would he laugh? “So... I’m sorry you had to see that.” Sungyeol starts getting impatient.

“You’re sorry for that? Not for the fact that you cheated on me with some girl?” Sungyeol’s voice is a bit louder than he intended.

Woohyun widens his eyes the slightest bit, taking in a breath before starting again. “Yeah, I’m sorry for that too. But.. It’s just that… I don’t want to hurt you, but…” He trails off, looking away.

“But what?” Sungyeol can feel his lower lip quivering, his tears held back for now.

Woohyun looks up to meet his gaze again, then suddenly: “I don’t love you anymore.”

And there go his tears.

Woohyun looks away again, avoiding any eye contact. Sungyeol starts blinking his tears away. “Wh-what? How? You... don’t love me?”

“I don’t know. I just stopped loving you.”

Sungyeol doesn’t think Woohyun realizes, but each word just makes things worse. Each word feels like a stab in Sungyeol’s heart, or maybe like someone is taking his heart and ripping it in half right before his eyes.

Sungyeol wants to stand up and walk (or maybe run) away from this place, maybe find a corner in a dark alley and just bawl his eyes out. But he can’t seem to do it. He’s stuck frozen here, motionless and speechless with a careless man sitting in front of him. He looks up at Woohyun, who looks unmoved with the situation. He feels like pushing him away, like yelling at him and kicking him and slapping him, but at the same time, all he wants to do is beg for him not to leave, to love him again, to kiss him and hug him and maybe just sing with him because that’s what always made everything better if they had a problem. Just sitting together and holding each other.

Sungyeol reaches out for Woohyun’s hand, but Woohyun pulls back. “Yeol…”

“This can’t be happening.” Sungyeol mumbles barely audibly. Woohyun narrows his eyes at him.

“What?”

“This isn’t happening. This can’t be happening…” Sungyeol gets up abruptly, his tears rolling down his cheeks like there’s no stopping them. Woohyun looks up at him a bit more sympathetically this time.

Sungyeol takes a last look at Woohyun before he starts running; just running away from the one he called his soul mate and his love just days prior. Woohyun sighs and calls after him, “That won’t help anything. It won’t fix things for you.”

But Sungyeol doesn’t care. He just wants to run away and be anywhere but here at this point. And so he does. He keeps on running. He doesn’t realize for how long, but he’s still running with those tears staining his cheeks and the park and the careless man far behind him.

It’s been a while, now.

He can’t forget any of the memories that occurred months earlier. And he doesn’t want to forget. He doesn’t want to forget because he absolutely loves all the precious and sweet memories, but at the same time, he can’t forget the terrible ones either. It’s been seven months, and he still doesn’t want to forget. He’s skinnier than his already usual thin self, and his skin is paler than it already was. With the sobbing and all his memories, he forgets to eat (It’s not that he doesn’t want to, he just forgets). He has dark circles under his eyes because he still can’t stop crying. He doesn’t exactly know what else to do, but cry. He remembers a certain memory, one where Woohyun is telling him that he would never leave him. He had said that he would never do anything to hurt him, and that he would be by his side forever. He told him that time that nothing would break them apart. And he lied.

There come the tears again.

Sungyeol wakes up sobbing, snapping up from his bed, hands in his face and his back against the headboard. He feels a body move next to him with a small groan, but he ignores it. The figure beside him wakes up fully as he sees the other crying, immediately wrapping his arms around him in alarm.

“Yeol? What’s wrong?” Sungyeol hears the familiar voice that belongs to Woohyun. Almost startled, he pulls back to look at him. “Are you okay?”

Sungyeol just keeps staring at him for a long moment, blinking and hiccupping as his sobs die down.

“Sungyeol, you had a nightmare.” With that, Sungyeol lets out a sigh of relief, falling almost desperately into Woohyun’s arms. Woohyun didn’t question him anymore but instead just held him tightly in his arms, brushing away any tears that he found. He occasionally planted small kisses in his boyfriend’s hair, trying to calm him down in any way he could, shushing him as he gradually quieted down.

Sungyeol exhaled softly as he looked up at Woohyun once he was finally done crying. “Don’t leave me. Don’t ever leave,” he whispered in the softest tone, he was surprised Woohyun could hear him at all. Woohyun on the other hand looked completely taken aback from that sudden phrase.

“What are you talking about? I would never leave you.” Woohyun sighed, hugging Sungyeol close to his chest.

“In my dream… You left me for someone else. You told me you didn’t love me anymore.” Sungyeol clenched his eyes shut, reluctantly remembering his dream.

Woohyun sighed and shook his head at the appalling thought, closing his eyes and simply pressing kisses to Sungyeol’s hair, holding him as if his life depended on it.

“That will never happen in reality, Love. I’m not the Woohyun that hurt you.”
