Foreword
16th November 1991
The cold wind was blowing, rolling the fallen leafs on the pavement of the silent street. There was no one there, not a single soul as the rain started pouring all of a sudden.
Oh, but there was someone. A dark silhouette was lurking in the darkness of the night, eyes shining strangely from under the hood of the long cape. The person was carrying something – a basket.
And as a car passed by, the silhouette retreated in the shadow of a bare tree, watching intently the young couple that stepped out of the car, laughing as the man protected the woman and their baby with his jacket. They were the proud parents of a baby boy.
The hood fell, revealing a woman with strange eyes burning. The pupils were vertical like those of a cat and the colour of deep amber. Her interest was vivid. Those two were perfect for her next step.
Strange enough, her high heels made no sound as she stepped on the pavement of the road while crossing the street, eyes fixed on the house that now had its windows illuminated by a bright white light.
“Hush, my child,” she harmoniously sang the child in the basket back to sleep. “They will be your parents from now on,” the woman continued, caressing the soft skin of the baby, as the kid had clenched its slim fingers around her index one. “They’ll take good care of you. And in time, your body will learn how to forget everything he experienced till now. I’m sorry.”
And she placed the basket on the doorway without second thoughts. The moment her slim finger hit the doorbell, she vanished into thin air.
“Yes?” The woman that opened the door looked puzzled around and was about to close the door back when she noticed the brown basket. “Honey! Come here for a little bit!” She then called out to her husband.
“What’s that, dear?” He came with their baby in his arms.
“It’s a baby,” she answered, picking up the sleeping baby from the basket. “And there’s a note as well.”
“Her name is Ah Yeong. She was born during the new moon of the fifth day of August, current year. Please, take good care of her! She’s a good child. It’s me that did wrong to the world, not her…”
The two looked one at another not knowing what to do.
“We should be calling the police,” the man finally spoke, passing the baby boy to his mother.
“Ah~~” The baby boy called, stretching his arms towards the sleeping girl. “Aahh Yeee~~”
And so she got to stay. Ah Yeong…
