It had been about a month since Sanya and Vasya met in the alleyway. Sanya hadn't had a place to stay so she had moved into Vasya's beat-up apartment with her. She slept on the couch and it creaked with every move she made, but she didn't particularly mind. It was the closest thing she had to home since her parents were killed in a tragic car accident. She was fourteen when it happened, and it still haunted her. But most days she was able to put it out of her head and focus on the present. The nights were what proved problematic. She couldn't remember the last time she had a peaceful sleep. She was always plagued by nightmares. Vasya wasn't much better off. She rarely slept and instead let memories of Russia and her father play over and over in her head. But both managed to put on a smile during the day. After all, the ones who hurt the most smile the brightest.
It seemed to be just another day. Walk around, beat some people up, steal some wallets, tear down some wanted posters. You know, the norm. It was a rainy April day, the sun completely blocked by the layer of dark clouds. This made the girls' job even more interesting. The shadows were insanely dark and perfect for hiding in and the rainy weather distracted people enough for Sanya and Vasya to get sneak attack their victims. Little did they know that another group of girls was using the same advantages on them.
Nothing seemed out of place in the alley. As a matter of fact, to the girls it seemed ideal. They could wait in the shadows for an innocent passerby and stop them dead in their tracks demanding payment for safe passage. However, the shadows were already occupied. As the two girls walked down the corridor, they suddenly found themselves surrounded. Six girls stood in a circle on all sides of them. They were trapped.
Vasya and Sanya knew this day would come eventually, the day that they ran into a gang. They had made plans and strategized for hours on how to handle the situation, but all plans left their minds when they saw the guns and knives pointed directly at them. These were the One Shots, and they meant business.
Another girl, tall and lean, emerged from the shadows. Her blonde hair stood out against her tanned skin and dark eyes. She walked into the circle, straight towards the two frightened girls. She carried no weapon and her expression held no menace. She was calm, cool, and composed.
"It's nice to finally meet you. Vasya. Sanya." She turned to each girl as she said their names. The two said nothing.
The blonde girl turned to the girls in the circle around her. "Put down your weapons." They obliged. Vasya and Sanya eased up a bit, slightly relaxing their tightly defensive positions.
"I'm not sure if you know of us," the girl continued, "but we're a gang called the One Shots. We're made up of the toughest, meanest, most talented, and loneliest girls in Manila. My name's Sukki. I'm the leader and proud of it."
"This sounds like a commercial," Sanya snickered.
"That's because it is," Sukki replied. "A commercial advertising our gang. And we'd like you two to join."
Sanya and Vasya were a bit taken aback. They'd never considered joining a gang, only being beaten up by one. It was a question they never thought they'd have to answer, so it caught them off guard.
"Of course, if you don't want to accept our offer, we can just beat you up and take your money. It's your choice. We'll let you two talk it over." With that, the circle of girls dissolved back into the shadows, leaving Sanya and Vasya seemingly alone. The two looked at each other questioningly.
"So what now?" Sanya asked.
Vasya shrugged. "To be completely honest, I have nothing against it. It would be a home away from home. But the decision's up to you. I can take the beating if you don't want to join."
Sanya shook her head. "I'm not worried about a beating either, but maybe this is a good opportunity. I dunno. It's so sudden. You're better at decisions than I am."
"Oh so she finally admits it," Vasya jabbed at her friend mockingly. Sanya stuck out her tongue.
"Alright then," Vasya said to Sanya, "You sure this is okay with you?" Sanya nodded.
Vasya turned to the shadows. "We've made our decision. We'll join you."
Sukki stepped into the fading light with a big smile on her face. "Good! Now all that's left is for us to decide whether we want you or not!" She never lost her smile.
The two girls looked at each other and Sanya spoke up. "Wait, you're the ones who searched us out. Why would you offer if you didn't want us?"
"It's complicated and I don't have time to explain. Maybe later. That is, if you're up to One Shot standards."
"You better believe we can meet your standards! And blow them out of the water too," Sanya blurted out.
Something passed over Sukki's smile. It only lasted a second, but Vasya could've sworn she looked almost demonic.
"We'll see about that." There was a pause as Sukki sized up each of the girls. "So what are each of you good at?"
Sanya spoke up first. "Fist fighting and martial arts."
"Perfect! You'll be fighting Toki. She's our hand-to-hand specialist."
Vasya hesitated. "I make bombs."
Sukki seemed interested. "Very neat. Lani is our weaponry technician and she knows a lot about explosives. She'll test you."
Sukki directed her attention behind her. "Lani! Toki! Get out here!" Two girls, each slightly short, obviously Filipino, and extremely thin, appeared to either side of Sukki. "Toki, take Sanya down the alley a bit and have a little spar. Try not to hurt her too bad." Sanya sneered at the last comment and was about to make a remark when Vasya kicked her. "And Lani, take our little expert over in the other direction and make her head hurt with questions." Toki and Lani laughed and high fived before leading the girls in separate directions. This would be fun... for almost everyone.

So yup... another ish teaser, but practice makes perfect, no? Anyway, I know your wonderful author and I haven't made an appearance in a long while and we're sincerely sorry for that.
