Mute

Mute

Kyuhyun sat quietly in the waiting room all alone. He'd arrived too soon, because the bus drove at ridiculous times. There were twenty minutes until his therapy began, so he decided to count the tiles in the ceiling to make time go faster. His iPhone was dead, so he couldn't even use that for time wasting. He could go for a walk, but the weather outside was stormy, snowy and cold. He would sing if he could, but unfortunately that was impossible in the place he was in.

No, he would just sit in the warm waiting room and count those stupid tiles.

Seven...

Eight...

Nine...

He had not counted many tiles, before a tall man suddenly interrupted him by entering the waiting room rather clumsy. "No, I can't pick you up right now. I'm at work. Call Hae instead."

Kyuhyun noticed the man had an old looking vacuum cleaner with him and assumed him to be some sort of cleaning assistant in this building, though the smart outfit didn't exactly fit said position.

When the tall man ended his call he looked around in the room and noticed that he wasn't alone.

Kyuhyun didn't know what to do with himself and therefore decided to just smile in all his perplexity.

"Oh, hi. Does he still take patients in at this hour?" The man asked and closed the door behind him, and started pulling the cord out of the vacuum cleaner.

Kyuhyun narrowed his eyes. Was this man stupid or what? Didn't he work here, or was this his first time? Was it possible that the man didn't even know what place he worked at?

It didn't take the man long before he understood the evil glare that was sent him. "Ah, sorry, I always forget that. I guess you're the last one for today, since the clock is almost four. I wonder why he keeps making appointments after working time." The tall man bended down and inserted the plug.

Even though the man was stupid Kyuhyun couldn't help but admire this carefree being. He wasn't used to people talking to him like this. Like he was normal.

It actually felt nice.

Maybe it didn't have to be so bad to be in his situation after all.

Kyuhyun suddenly got caught staring at the man, though to his surprise the man smiled friendly at him - and there was something in his eyes that glinted. Like he'd discovered a hidden diamond or something.

The man rose and sighed loudly. "I really don't want to work right now. Would you mind if I take a seat?" The man asked casually.

Once again perplexed, Kyuhyun nodded with an indifferent face.

As the man took the red armchair next to him, he became very aware of everything all of a sudden; how he was seated, how his clothes fitted, how his cup was only half full... Well, if the man needed coffee he could drink some of his, he guessed - or, of course, he could go pure something for himself in the automat.

Oh, but it was so long ago that someone had been this near to him.

Kyuhyun definitely disliked when he was acting like an idiot like now, yet he only kept on by gazing slightly at the handsome man beside him.

"It has been such a long day." The man exclaimed. "First I woke up too late and missed my bus; then I had to walk all the way to my University in this horrible weather; next I had forgotten my assignment; then I went to my first part time job, where I crashed several glasses. On the way over here I almost died, because some crazy dude decided to run his bike in this weather. I don't know what happened today, but everything just seems to go completely wrong. Aish... I just long for some peaceful time for a moment; like watching a movie or playing on my ps." When the man was done babbling about his day, he turned to look at Kyuhyun, who was listening with amusement.

"Haha, sorry I'm so dense. My name is Siwon. I promise I'm not on crack or anything if that's what you're wondering about." Siwon gave an apologetic, dimple smile to persuade forgiveness. "What's your name?"

Kyuhyun would have laughed nervously, but couldn't. Instead he reached down for his iPhone to write a message on it, but he quickly remembered that there was no life in the thing.

"You can use mine." Siwon said holding out his cell phone, which Kyuhyun took. Kyuhyun was impressed that the man had guessed what he'd searched for and typed eagerly, hoping to have some sort of conversation that didn't involve his therapist.

"Kyuhyun." Siwon murmured to himself as he read the message. "That's a beautiful name. I have a cousin who is named the same. It means 'worthy like jades', right?"

Kyuhyun nodded eagerly and typed again on the phone. >>Do you always speak so much?<<

Siwon laughed in a way that made Kyuhyun feel all warm and fussy. He'd never liked the waiting room, but that was changed for now.

"I only speak so much when I'm tense and because I know that you can't participate - yet." This made Kyuhyun look up and meet Siwon's eyes. Again, this glint was there, but Kyuhyun couldn't decide what it meant. Yet he loved to consume every possible second of Siwon's enchanting eyes.

Perhaps the glint was hope?

>>Do you really think I can do it?<< Kyuhyun asked doubtfully.

"Yeah... I've seen it happen. Mr. Choi is very good indeed." Siwon said and patted Kyuhyun on his shoulder, which made Kyuhyun blush of surprise. "In fact..." He continued while looking shyly into Kyuhyun's eyes. "I've been a patient here once. It was thirteen years ago or so... I was poisoned, which damaged my larynx." Siwon pointed to his throat. "So I came in treatment, but was unable to speak for nine months after the incident. However, I worked hard and was one day finally able to speak again."

Kyuhyun felt relieved that he maybe would be able to speak again one day, yet he couldn't help but think that it was all hopeless. He hadn't improved the slightest, and he'd been in treatment for three months. The only thing he had been able to utter so far was a weak squeak. >>After how long?<<

"Fifteen months." He revealed and Kyuhyun didn't know if he wanted to cry of happiness or sadness.

One and a half years; he could do that, right? Only his larynx was damaged as well, though not from poisoning. However, these three months had been so terribly long already. The worst thing was that he didn't even get the mental support from his parents, who were on business trips and whatnot. Their carriers were so important. Kyuhyun had been important too once; whenever he'd done good. But becoming temporary mute was bad, and too much for his parents to cope with.

But it wasn't his fault for being in a car accident.

"Are you okay?" Siwon's concerned voice snapped Kyuhyun back to reality. He had been staring out in the blue while thinking of how unfair life was towards him.

>>Yes, but I'm afraid.<<  Kyuhyun admitted and tears welled up in his eyes. It was so frustrating, for he used to be so strong once. Now he was broken, and Siwon's approach had only made him even more vulnerable. Though he felt a slight hope, he also felt the exact opposite. >>I used to sing.<<

"I sing today." Siwon said enlightening.

Kyuhyun looked at the man with begging eyes. He didn't know what he was begging for, yet he felt that this man could save him. He'd already talked to him so nicely without having to. Would it be too selfish to hope for more?

"Now, don't look so sad. Everything is going to be alright." Siwon said comfortingly. "I have an idea. Why don't you and I get to know each other? I'm free tonight, so perhaps we could hang out or something?"

Just for a moment Kyuhyun believed in telepathy, but they were interrupted by Mr. Choi, who opened the door and bid his former patient goodbye. "See? We're making great progress. Have a good evening." He said and turned to Kyuhyun and Siwon. "Why are you not cleaning?" He asked Siwon with a stern voice.

"Ah, sorry dad, I was Just talking with Kyuhyun here. By the way, Kyu... Can't we promise each other to sing together once you've recovered?" Siwon said eagerly and Kyuhyun didn't know what to say - or write.

But in the end he nodded gladly. >>We'll hang out later then?<<

"Yeah, I'll wait for you here. I'll be done cleaning before your therapy is finished." He then gave Kyuhyun a dimple smile, that made him blush much to his disliking, and went to the abandoned vacuum cleaner.

"Ah, I'll never understand that boy. Siwon isn't usually outgoing. Perhaps it's because you have something in common." Mr. Choi said in all confusion but glad. He then opened the door into his office. "Are you ready, Kyuhyun?"

I'm more than ready. Kyuhyun thought and rose with newfound energy to go train his voice. Thanks to Siwon, he had regained hope for one day to sing again.
