Flicker of a Switch

Description

"Well, it seems to me that the best relationships -- the ones that last -- are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. It's like, one day you look at a person and you see more than you did the night beforeLike a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend... is suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with."

- Dana Scully of The X-Files

Foreword

A simple story about two best friends who come to realize what they really mean
to each other, but are afraid to take the next step in fear of losing their friendship.

{IN OTHER'S EYES}

"I can just tell. The way you look at her now is just different."

*

"Sweetie, denial is just another form of confirmation."

*

"You two are perfect for each other and you don't even realize it."

*

"You know, I would give anything to have the kind of relationship you two have."

{EXCERPT}

He felt a light weight on his shoulder. His best friend had fallen asleep. The apparent flush of intoxication visible on her face despite only sipping on one bottle of beer in the past hour.

"Even now this girl still can't handle her alcohol," he thought with a light chuckle before letting his mind wander back to why she was here in the first place.

*

She had come knocking on his door at around midnight, with a pair of red, doleful eyes.

'Hey, can I sleep over?'

Typically he would jokingly object to her request but the moment he saw her, he knew something was wrong and decided against it. From the way her body drooped as if she was about to fall down at any moment to her vibrant smile no longer visible to the solemn tone from her voice. He felt his heart clutch in worry.

'My dear friend, you're always welcomed here,' he stated with a gentle tone, the kind he always used when she was in need of comfort. 'What's wrong?'

Without a second thought, to his surprise, she threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly. He slowly wrapped his arms around her back. They stood there, at the doorway, in silence for a moment. He knew she would tell him when she was ready to and she did, breaking the silence.

'We broke up.'

This time, it was his turn to hug her tighter, giving her a quick squeeze.

'Bastard's an idiot for letting you go. He doesn't even know what he's losing.'

He closed the door and made way for her to sit on his couch.

'Got some beer?' She asked; and that made him raise his right eyebrow in response.

'Since when did you like drinking beer? You've always been a fruity cocktail kind of girl.'

'This occasion calls for some beer.'

He places down four bottles on the coffee table and then hands her an open bottled of Heineken as he takes a sip of his own.

'Nothing's better than having a good bottle of beer with a friend after a long day,' he said, sitting next to her. A comfortable silence came between them again and there was just background noise that came from the television.

'You're not going to ask about it?' She refers to her break up.

'You'll tell me when you want to,' he keeps his eyes on the TV while taking in another sip, 'and plus you're not going to tell me anything if I force it out of you.'

'Ah you know me so well, don't you?'

'Fifteen years not wasted that's for sure, or else how would I know the inner workings of Park Shinhye.'

She could help but roll her eyes despite how true the statement was. It really has been fifteen years hasn't it?

'You know after we broke up, I ended up walking around aimlessly. I didn't know where to go. I know I couldn't go home; I couldn't let Omma see me like this so I just went to the beach to let it all out. Then I realized I needed alcohol but I didn't want to get drunk alone. So I knew I had to find you. I'm so done crying.'

'Lucky for him or else he's he would get a piece of me. He doesn't deserve you anyway; you're too good for him. He's not worth your tears.'

She furrowed her eyebrows. 'You know it's not the fact that we broke up, I mean it was a mutual break up, it's not like he dumped me. It's just that,' she paused for a moment as he listened to her intently, 'it was the end of a relationship. We dated for over a year, I can't help but feel like I'm mourning over the time wasted you know. To be honest, thinking about it, I'm kind of relieved now.'

'Relieved?'

'It's just ever since...'

'Ever since what?'

'He just never really trusted me I guess. Honestly how can a relationship work out without trust.'

'There are better guys out there for you anyways. Who knows maybe fate might just be playing with you and you might actually end up with Jihoon hyung. It's obvious you had a crush on him when we were little anyways and our mom loves you,' he said as he wiggled his eyebrows a bit and .

She laughed. 'What?! I did not have a crush on your older brother!'

'You can keep denying it all you want but I will always remember how you would choose to ride on his bike instead of mine when we were younger.'

'Is that jealousy I smell?' she said with a hint of playfulness and he shrugged. 'I only rode on Jihoon oppa's bike because someone here wasn't strong enough to have me on his bike.' She stuck out her tongue teasingly.

'Yeah right, then what would you call these?' He started flexing his biceps for her to see, only have her roll her eyes again.

‘Those muscles of yours only developed because of your military service.'

'Whatever.'

'Who knows though, the irony if we actually end up together.' Now that threw him off. Was she drunk already? Did she just say what he thought she said; the fact that they could be more than friends? Sensing his response was probably why she continued with, 'I'm just kidding!' Oh she was definitely drunk on some level given the tinged of slur evident in her speech. Eventually, she let out a sigh, 'Ahhhh, I don't know anymore. I'm so done with guys and relationships in general. It's best to just depend on myself.'

'You know you'll always have me. I'll always be there for you, you can count on it,' he spoke out sincerely.

'Yeah, I know,' she smiled at him knowingly. 'You are my best friend.'

*

Yes they are best friends. Yet why is it that nowadays everyone around them seems to be questioning their friendship as if there was more to it? Was there more to it than he thought? Looking down at her once again, he couldn't help but admire her long eyelashes and the way she crinkled her cute button nose. Cute? He never remembered her being cute to him before. Dear lord, maybe being in the army really did deprive him. He couldn't help it though. He brushed the few strands of hair away from her face, letting his hand rest on her cheek longer than normal. He couldn't help but admire her cherry lips and maybe this was the alcohol talking but before he could control himself, perhaps he didn't want to control himself. Without a second thought, he leaned forward and softly brushed his lips against hers.

{AUTHOR'S NOTE}

Hello everyone! Thank you for dropping by and checking out this story of mine. This isn't my first fanfic though it is the first one I am posting on this account. About a week or two ago I got lured into the Dooley Couple fandom after rewatching Heartstrings again. It just sparked some inspiration in me to write a story. Also I caught the perfect quote from the X-Files above on tumblr and thought that it sounded really suitable for our Dooley Couple, so I decided to develop a story around it. Anyways I hope you guys enjoy and look forward to my next update! A little warning though, I have a mid term this Wednesday and an essay due on Thursdays that I haven't started yet, so it might take me a while to get the next chapter up. I'm aiming for next Monday though but we'll see on how things go. I hope the foreword is long enough to keep you guys intrigued though! Also sorry for any grammar mistakes, I kinda just threw this up in the middle of the night xD Comments and/or constructive criticisms are always appreciated, the more the merrier (hint hint)! ;P

                                                Cheers,

Sherry
