One.

Language of Flowers

Meet Hyoyeon. Excelling in all subjects, she could’ve been labeled a nerd. Her looks weren’t of those that were eye-catching but had an aura so mysterious; you couldn’t help but be pulled in. Next to her eight other friends, Hyoyeon may even seem plain, and boring.

So just why in the world would she ever receive flowers?

Day one;

The yellow of the acacias were bright under the ever-so-generous sun. The yellow of the bulbs were fighting against the dark brown leather of the book it lay on top of. The Language of Flowers, a dictionary. A card was found and only two words were printed; “find me.” Stealthily, Hyoyeon opened up the dictionary; comparing the photograph provided in it to the flower she was given, not knowing the name of the flower presented. She finds it eventually.

A for acacias. Acacias, for secret love.

Secret love? Hyoyeon wonders. Her heart races and her brain starts working; just who could it be?

Day two;

 B for baby’s breath. Baby’s breath, for everlasting love.

Day three;

 C for cloves and pink carnations. Cloves meaning I have loved you and you have not known it and pink carnations, holding the message that you will never be forgotten.

Day four;

Hyoyeon was a bit taken aback when she didn’t find flowers on her windowsill again. There were no bouquets and not a single stalk was in sight. It was bound to end anyways. Hyoyeon couldn’t help but think that. Disappointed, Hyoyeon made her way to her afternoon classes.

Coming home late, however, Hyoyeon finds flowers on her windowsill again. Confused, she takes slow steps towards the windowsill. The flowers were clusters of purple amidst the dark green of the leaves. The room was dim and streetlights outside let the room, along with the flowers, carry a warm glow. As always, the words “find me.” were printed on a card and almost automatically, Hyoyeon’s hands went for the dictionary. Her eyes skimmed the pictures quickly, her actions looking almost frantic.

H for heliotrope. Heliotrope, for devoted affection.

Day five;

 I for ice plant. Ice plant, to express your beauty that freezes me.

Day six;

 L for laburnum. Laburnum, for your beauty that absorbs me.

Day seven;

 L for lungworts. Lungworts, to convey that you are my life.

Day eight;

 M for myrtle. Myrtle, to symbolise my love for you.

Day nine;

 O for orchid. Orchid, for your refined beauty.

Day ten;

 The flowers have been coming in for ten days now and Hyoyeon isn’t really sure of what she’s supposed to do. She’d love to find the person, thank him, for raising her confidence everyday, and for deciding to send her flowers everyday. She walks into her room today to find moss roses lined up on her window sill. There’s a card again; time with the words “just in case it wasn’t obvious enough.” printed. She quickly looks for the meaning in her given dictionary.

R for rose, moss. A moss rose, for confessions of love.

Hyoyeon’s heart flutters ate the definition. The flowers have been the only thing she looks forward to since the first bouquet of acacias appeared. She sets the dictionary down and stares out the window, wondering which flower she’ll get next.

Hyoyeon doesn’t know when, but along the way, she’s fallen in love with he-who-gives-she-flowers.
