New Year

Description

a late New Year's one-shot ^^

Foreword

Seohyun adjusted the ties of her mask. The laces had started to slip out of her knots, so she raised her hands to the back of her head to tie them back properly. She looked around as she did this, checking out who'd come.

The eonnies suddenly had this urge a couple of weeks ago to hold their own New Year's Countdown party. They'd thought it will be a great way to welcome the new year, since they were releasing a new album on New Year's Day. Seohyun could only agree and go along with their idea.

So here she was, in the sidelines of their masquerade. Masked guests stood around, some dancing to the music blaring from the speakers. The lights were turned off as a disco ball spun from the ceiling, reflecting dots of light everywhere. The eonnies were circulating, fully engaged in chatting with everybody. Almost all their celebrity friends came.

I guess they didn't have other plans, too, she thought to herself as she rubbed her arms, warming them from the chill. I should probably move, she thought. She stayed in place for the next five minutes.

Sighing, she leaned against the wall as she smoothed out her dress. She was Tinkerbell tonight, decked out in a lovely short, white dress with rainbow colored sequins dotted along in floral patterns. A pair of huge, wired butterfly wings hung at her back, a glittering fairy wand in her hand.

What kind of fairy are you? she thought to herself, shaking her head grimly. Here she was, hanging along the walls by herself. The fairy is now a wallflower, she thought, tapping her knee with her wand..

She was startled by a sudden flash of light. She covered her eyes in reflex.

"What a lovely picture. A butterfly stuck on the wall," a low voice drawled from in front of her.

She brought down her hand slowly as she looked towards where the voice was coming from. A guy in a black tux and cape stood in front of her, a white mask covering his face. He'd just taken her picture with his phone.

"Hi Seohyunnie," the guy said with a lopsided grin.

She stared at him, open in surprise. "How'd you know it was me?" she asked despite herself.

"Ahh, so I was right then," he said with a small laugh, flinging his cape over one shoulder. The action was supposed to be debonair and charismatic. He failed. He spent several seconds shrugging his left shoulder, trying to move the cape towards his back. Seohyun covered to keep from laughing out loud.

When he finally succeeded, he placed both hands on his hips, feet shoulder-width apart. "I came to catch myself a fairy, and here I am, successful at my first try," he boasted, a snaggletooth showing through his smile.

Seohyun crossed her arms across her chest in a show of defiance. She leaned forward and smiled, as if taunting him. "Who said this fairy wanted to be caught?" she asked, playing along with his little act.

He paused for a while, a bit surprised at her reply. He smiled as he realized she was playing along. Walking up to her until he was only about two feet away, he clasped his hands behind him and leaned in towards her, invading her personal space.

A bit taken aback, she placed her hands in front of her, palms facing him, ready to stop him just in case. He grinned as she did so, and purposely leaned closer until she had no choice but to place her palms on his chest to stop him. She leaned further back until her head was against the wall.

"Haven't you ever heard of personal space?" she whispered nervously, her eyes blinking rapidly.

"Ahh, but this is me catching a fairy," he whispered back as he braced his hands against the wall, locking her inside. They stared at each other through their masks, being in their own little world.

"Catch me if you can, then," Seohyun taunted breathlessly before slipping out of his arms and hurrying off to her eonnies. Looking back, she saw him leaning against the wall, his arms crossed in front of him.

She felt his eyes follow her as she moved around the room. For the next hour, she consciously kept herself busy circulating with the eonnies, restraining herself from looking towards the little corner where he stood, watching her.

This is too much she thought, feeling a bit claustrophobic. She sneaked a peek towards his direction a little before midnight. He wasn't there anymore. She looked around the room trying to search for him. He wasn't there.

He didn't even try, he thought glumly. She excused herself from her eonnies, deciding to get some fresh air on the rooftop.

"Heyyy Hyunnie, it's cold out there. Besides, we're gonna start the countdown soon," Hyoyeon said as she grabbed Seohyun's hand. Seohyun gently pat her eonnie's hand and let go. "I'll be right back, I just need some fresh air."

Taking her coat out of the locker in the hallway, she walked up the stairs sullenly to the rooftop. A blast of cold air hit her as she opened the door to the rooftop. Thinking of going back, she turned around to close it when a hand reached out to grab her arm before the door fully closed.

"Gotcha," he whispered softly into her ear.

Seohyun held her breath as she stood still. Shivers ran down her spine as she felt his breath along her neck and shoulder. He wasn't touching her anywhere else, but every nerve in her body felt his presence. It's just the cold, she thought.

Yeah, go ahead and convince yourself that she continued to tell herself. She allowed herself to be pulled, turning around to face him. He'd taken off his mask and was smiling at her widely. His cheeks were ruddy from the cold.

She automatically reached out both hands to his face, trying to warm his cheeks with her gloved hands. She giggled as she saw his signature cheek-bursting smile. With gleaming eyes, he suddenly pulled her into his arms, making her squeal in surprise. He covered both of them with his cape with a bit of difficulty because of her wings, but he did it.

"Finally caught my fairy," he whispered as he embraced her tightly.

"Hmmm... It's really warm in here," she said, closing her eyes as she leaned her head onto his chest. She felt a rumble go through his chest as he laughed happily. "Place your feet on top of mine, I want to show you something," he whispered. She did as he instructed, and he carried her towards the fenced side of the rooftop.

"Dance with me for a while, oppa," she said as she brought up her arms around his neck, swaying to the music coming from the windows below. "You know I don't dance, Hyunnie," he whined, but swayed along with her, leaning his forehead against hers. They danced for a moment that way, her feet on top of his, her arms around him, and his around her, the cape their only protection from the cold.

"Have you heard of the dragon who married a fairy?" he suddenly asked. Seohyun's forehead furrowed, thinking. "Nope, I haven't. Is that a fairy tale?" she asked him, seriously. She tried to think back to all the fairy tales she'd heard from her mom.

Yonghwa bent back his head as he laughed out loud, his body vibrating with mirth. Getting back into their original position, he started to tell a story, "Once upon a time, there was this lonely dragon... He promised himself he will never grow old into an adult, so he moved to Neverland..."

Seohyun laughed and hit his chest lightly with her hand. "Eyyy, that's Peter Pan, oppa," she giggled.

Yonghwa just grinned and shrugged his shoulders as he continued his tall tale. "Well, this dragon was a choding. Anyways..."

He stopped as he heard the people from below chanting.

"Ten."

"Nine."

He lifted Seohyun's chin to look directly into her eyes. "To make the long story short, the dragon met a fairy, fell in love, got married, had lots of kids, and they lived happily ever after."

Seohyun stared at him, stunned. "Ne?!"

"Two."

"One!"

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"

"Happy New Year, babe," Yonghwa whispered as he planted his lips on hers and kissed her thoroughly. She closed her eyes as she kissed him back with all the love she felt at that very moment.

Yonghwa straightened up and told her to open her eyes.

"I prepared a bit of a surprise for you... Ummm... I hope you like it..." he said, hugging her tightly but not looking at her. Curious, she looked around for the surprise. Expecting a wrapped package, she gasped as she discovered it.

Hundreds of little sky lanterns were slowly floating up to the sky. They looked like tiny wishes going up to the heavens. But then out of nowhere came up a single red lantern, bigger than all the rest. It appeared to have some words written on it, so she leaned forward to see more clearly. She stayed that way as the red lantern slowly moved upward and out of sight.

"Hyunnie?"

She turned back to him, her eyes moist. "Of course I will, oppa. Fairy tales do come true, right?" she whispered.

Yonghwa breathed a deep sigh of relief as he enveloped her again in his arms.

Yes, fairy tales do come true, Seohyunnie... You just made this dragon a really happy man...

A/N:   I know this may seem a weird song choice, but I really love Bruno Mars' parts in this song, so I usually skip the rap parts. ANYWHOOO~~ I adjusted the timing so you guys only need to see the last part of the video. The night before New Year's Eve, my family and I witnessed a lantern show very much like the one in this video. I had goosebumps all over at the sight of it all, and this song was playing in the background. I checked out the video and loved the last part ^^

HAPPY NEW YEAR MY LOVELY GOGU-CHINGUS!

BRACE YOURSELVES FOR MORE SPAZZABLE MOMENTS IN 2013! I CAN FEEL IT! ^^

Author-nim, I really like this story. It's so creative & unique way you used whrn Yong oppa propose to Hyun unnie. I haven't meet the story where Yong oppa propose with lantern. & I also like when Yong oppa made up a fairy tale story about himself & Hyun unnie (Just like their YongSeo story book made by Hyun unnie) Ah, lastly Don't worry Yong oppa you'll never get lonely anymore because had been success to persuade your fairy to be yours. I just pray she's yours to in the real life ^_^
