Worn Out Paperbacks

Description

Ellie was a normal working girl: she had her degree, found a job she loved, lived with her blue parrot, Piplup, and had a nephew and a niece with whom she loved spending the weekends with.  Suddenly, her live gets turned upside down: her boss transfers her to a small bookshop in Seoul, South Korea, she doesn't speak the language and her beloved pet is forced to stay behind with her sister (who is afraid of the poor bird).

She had never believed in true love, not unless it was between two perfect characters bound in a novel.  But what is a girl supposed to do when she starts to fall in love, not for just one boy, but for three!? How is she ever going to choose!

Foreword

-Canada-

My manager handed me a file of papers this morning.  I opened it, curious, and came across immigration forms, visa forms and - shockingly - a plane ticket.

"What's this all about, Brian?" I asked.

"Well Ellie, I've been thinking about having a more cultured staff," he stopped to search for his words before continuing, "and I've decided to get you to start the pilot program.  I know that you've always wanted to open your own store, with your own inventory and your own ideas."

I nodded.  This was common knowlege at Blotts, the used bookstore where I worked.  All four of the staff members, including Brian, knew about my far off dreams and ultimate goal.  Nevertheless, Brian was giving me an opportunity of a lifetime here, and I couldn't just walk away from a transfer of such magnitude.

Gingerly closing the folder, I placed it - not so carefully - into my messenger bag.

"I'm going to have to think about this, Brian.  It's a huge opportunity, but I have to make sure that I'm all set to go!  I have to apply, and get my working visa, and pack and then find a place to live.  Not to mention, I need to learn the language!  I haven't taken a Korean class since my first year of college, and that was five years ago!"  I mentally kicked myself for not sticking to the classes.  Oh well.

Brian smirked as he picked up a newly arrived box of donated books, "Well, the paperwork is almost done; you just need to get it notarized and then drive to the embassy on the other side of town.  Your new employer wants you to start in four weeks, so once you finish shelving these books," he shoved the box of worn out paperback books in my arms as he said this, "you're free to go and get ready.  It's been a pleasure working with you Ellie, and this new place is going to be much better for you than this dusty little dump."

I smiled, "This place could never be a dump Brian.  It'll always be home for me."

"Yeah, whatever.  Now hurry up and do your job!"  Brian walked to the front counter, rubbing his bald head as he took his place at the cash register.  He was always working, that man.

I peered at the contents of the box that had been uncerimoniously dumped in my arms.  Great, I thought, Harlequin romance...
