“Yobseyo?” Bom’s sweet melodic voice answered.

“Bom, are you home? Remember I have to pick you up half past six so we can make it to your parents for dinner at 7,” I reminded Bom. She had less than two hours before we had to drive over to her parents’ home for the bi-weekly Friday dinner we had with them.

“Oh, I just left the house to go to the grocery store really quick. I saw a really good cake yesterday and I want to bring it for them,” I could hear her smile through the receiver. It was as if I was standing in front of her, watching her smile and intently inspect each cake because she’d only let her parents have the best.

“Mhmm, okay, drive safe and I’ll see you soon. I love you.”

“I love you too Tabi,” I smiled and resumed on with the last of the papers I was working on.

A few hours later I was finishing up the last of my work. With a satisfied sigh I glanced at the clock and began to gather the papers. It was a Friday and at rush hour, so I reasoned if I left a few minutes early it would help with traffic. My phone rang again and I saw that it was bom.

“Yes, darling?”

“Hello, is this Mr. Seunghyun Choi? This is Mina Cho. I'm an R.N. from Seoul National University Hospital. Your wife, Park Bom, has just been admitted as an emergency patient. I’m sorry to inform you but she was involved in an automobile accident. You’ll have to come right away.”
