Promise

You Make Me A Good Man

(A day later)

Hyunseung sighed as he brushed his teeth lazily, listening to Doojoon rant about some soccer stuff that he didn’t understand. The elder male was going on and on about the soccer season and how a soccer player managed to singlehandedly score three goals in a match or something. He honestly couldn’t be less bothered.

Hyunseung rolled his eyes as Doojoon continued rambling on, gurgling before spitting in the sink. He walked right past his best friend, rummaging through his closet for something decent to wear. He and Junhyung were going on their first official date and Hyunseung didn’t want to look too casual.

When Doojoon finally stopped talking, Hyunseung turned to the elder male. He held up two shirts and told Doojoon to pick one out. Hyunseung had already chosen which pair of jeans he wanted to wear for that night, but shirts were a complete different issue.

Doojoon scrutinized the two shirts being shown to him, eventually pointing at the plain black shirt. Hyunseung stared at the other shirt. The white shirt musical notes printed on its sleeves and Hyunseung wondered why his best friend would choose the plainer shirt.

Doojoon sighed as he noticed that Hyunseung was a lost cause. “That doesn’t even suit those jeans. And it’s better to dress simple now,” Doojoon explained when Hyunseung tilted his head to the side in confusion. Hyunseung just shrugged, throwing the black shirt onto his bed and stuffing the other shirt back into his closet.

“You know my sense of fashion has always been weird,” Hyunseung pointed out, flopping onto his bed and staring at his phone screen. A smile crept onto his face as he remembered how flustered Junhyung had been that day, after Hyunseung had pecked him on the cheek. Once Doojoon saw the foolish grin on his best friend’s face, he already knew what the younger male was thinking about.

He’s obsessed, seriously, Doojoon thought with a roll of his eyes. With that, he went back to his own room to get ready for work, which was in an hour’s time. He had to reach a little earlier with lunch for his boyfriend, who was always too lazy to buy his own lunch. Doojoon chuckled as he thought about how Yoseob had someone to buy him food every time, whether it was Hara or him.

“And I’m obsessed? Wow.”

Doojoon jumped and turned around, scowling at Hyunseung who was leaning against his room door. The younger male sighed and looked around his best friend’s room, shaking his head in distaste. “I never did like your room. It’s full of soccer stuff,” Hyunseung said.

“Get out,” Doojoon told Hyunseung, hurling one of his shirts at the younger. Hyunseung dodged it with a cheeky smile and Doojoon scowled once more, deciding to just change and ignore Hyunseung for the time being. After all, the two of them were always teasing and annoying each other. It was just how they were with each other.

“At least I wasn’t chuckling to myself when thinking of my boyfriend,” Hyunseung teased, dodging yet another shirt that was thrown in his direction. “Your aim stinks.”

Doojoon picked his bag up and exited his room, purposely hitting Hyunseung’s shoulder with his on the way out. “Yah! Help me change!” Hyunseung called out, huffing when Doojoon ignored him. “Doojoonie, help me!” Hyunseung whined. He smiled victoriously when Doojoon went into the younger male’s room, returning with the black shirt in his grasp.

“You’re lucky I actually care about you,” Doojoon muttered, pulling Hyunseung’s shirt off before helping him put the black shirt on. Hyunseung then hugged his best friend briefly before quickly going into his room to change his pants.

When Hyunseung reemerged from his room, his bag slung over his shoulder, he and Doojoon put their shoes on before leaving for the store.

-----------------------

Hyunseung poked Junhyung’s cheek continuously, wondering why the younger wasn’t reacting to him. He yelped when Junhyung suddenly turned around and began to tickle him, squirming around like a worm. “I’m ticklish! Stop it!” Hyunseung choked out between giggles, struggling to get away from his overly playful boyfriend. It was nice to know that Junhyung only acted like this around him, and no one else. I’m special that way.

Junhyung finally decided to give Hyunseung a break, chuckling when Hyunseung pouted and hit him on the arm. Wrapping his arms around his boyfriend, Junhyung back hugged Hyunseung and pressed a kiss onto the corner of Hyunseung’s lips.

“What’s with you today?” Hyunseung asked curiously.

“Why? Would you rather I be my usual boring self?” Junhyung questioned, pulling Hyunseung onto his lap. Hyunseung blushed at their position, never having thought of Junhyung as the type to be so openly affectionate. Well, they were in the staff lounge but still.

“It’s fine, I like this side of you,” Hyunseung grinned, thankful for the fact that Gikwang and Dongwoon were out having lunch, and Doojoon and Yoseob weren’t in the staff lounge either. Jungsu hadn’t turned up yet, so the couple was alone in the staff lounge and could do whatever they wanted to – and that wasn’t . They just wanted to get closer to each other, like any new couple.

Junhyung smiled as well, holding Hyunseung tighter and relishing in the fact that he could finally show some skinship to the one that he had secretly obsessed over. He let out a groan of annoyance when he heard the wind chime in the store, signalling that someone had entered the store. That was further confirmed when Jungsu called out, “Is anyone still here?”

Hyunseung turned around and chuckled at Junhyung’s sulking expression, getting off the younger’s lap. He sat beside Junhyung and leaned against the latter, sighing contentedly when Junhyung wrapped an arm around his waist. Jungsu walked in and cooed at the couple, squealing about how adorable they looked together.

“Hyung,” Hyunseung complained. “You’re embarrassing us.”

Jungsu shrugged. “Deal with it. I embarrass Youngwoon on a daily basis, in front of all our friends,” Jungsu said, going into his office to get something. Hyunseung stuck his tongue out at his manager, causing Junhyung to laugh.

“You’re too cute,” Junhyung told Hyunseung, making the elder male flush lightly at the praise. He’d never had anyone call him cute before, not even Jungsu. And to hear that coming from the one he loved was really nice, Hyunseung decided.

Jungsu took a piece of paper from a folder and handed it to Junhyung. The latter looked at Jungsu in confusion, and the manager sighed. “It’s a job application form. You can work here,” Jungsu told Junhyung, not missing how Junhyung’s eyes lit up at the prospect. Hyunseung really changed him.

“Really?” Junhyung asked in disbelief. Jungsu nodded simply and Junhyung smiled gratefully at the manager. “I’ll work well, Jungsu hyung. I promise that I won’t do anything illegal.”

Jungsu waved it off, knowing very well that Junhyung was telling the truth. “I need to find a way to make sure the superiors don’t find out about your criminal records, but that should be easy enough since you’ve never been arrested. Give that back to me by dinner,” Jungsu instructed, walking back into his office and shutting the door behind him.

Junhyung turned to Hyunseung and beamed, hugging the elder male.

“I can’t believe that just happened,” Hyunseung breathed out, still in shock.

“I know. But this way, we can work together! I’ll end up finding a more permanent job next time, and so will you, but this arrangement works for now,” Junhyung replied, smiling widely. Hyunseung nodded in agreement.

“Jungsu hyung is the best!”

In his office, Jungsu chuckled. They’d better appreciate me for this.

----------------------

Junhyung looked in the mirror, taking a deep breath to calm his nerves. It was already time for dinner, and he didn’t have to work the night shift. He had just changed out of his uniform, and back into his normal clothes. What if the date doesn’t go well? What if Seungie hates it?

He didn’t have much time to worry though, because Hyunseung knocked on the toilet door worriedly. “Junhyung, are you done?”

Junhyung sighed and pumped his fist to himself before turning around and opening the toilet door. Hyunseung nearly fell, having been leaning against the door. He smiled sheepishly at Junhyung and went to get his bag while Junhyung hung the uniform.

“What took you so long?” Hyunseung asked, waving to the others as Junhyung drove away from the store. Junhyung bit his lower lip, not knowing if he should tell Hyunseung the truth. It would seem a tad pathetic if Junhyung, infamous criminal, was nervous over a date.

It’s my first date with Seungie. Of course I’ll be nervous!

Junhyung sighed. “I was getting jittery,” he admitted. Hyunseung blinked a couple of times before the corners of his lips turned up into a smile.

“That’s it? I thought something bad happened,” Hyunseung said. “I’m glad you’re being honest with me though,” Hyunseung told Junhyung, the smile still plastered onto his face. Junhyung shrugged as nonchalantly as possible, but his heart didn’t fail to beat faster at Hyunseung’s words.

Junhyung didn’t reply, instead deciding to focus on driving to their destination. Hyunseung didn’t disturb Junhyung either, allowing the younger male to drive without any distractions.

In fifteen minutes, Junhyung drove into a car park and turned the engine off. Hyunseung honestly had no idea where on earth they were, never having been to that part of the country before. He let Junhyung blindfold him, smiling softly when he felt Junhyung hold onto his hand tightly, leading him to wherever they were going.

Hyunseung followed Junhyung until the younger male sat him down on a velvet chair, telling him to stay there and to keep the blindfold on. Hyunseung obliged, wondering what Junhyung had in store for him.

His questions were answered when he heard the piano being played, accompanied by Junhyung’s singing. Hyunseung’s smile only widened when Junhyung told him to take the blindfold off, having finished playing the self-composed and written piece. Hyunseung did as told and his breath caught in his throat at the sight in front of him.

Junhyung was standing beside the piano with a single lavender rose in his hand. The table in front of Hyunseung was already set with Korean dishes, alongside two glasses of red wine. There was nobody in the restaurant at all, apart from Hyunseung and Junhyung.

“Jun-” Hyunseung started, but was cut off as Junhyung made his way to Hyunseung. He handed the single lavender rose to the elder male who took it shyly, thanking Junhyung for the flower, and watched as the younger sat down across him.

“Do you know what a single rose represents?” Junhyung asked, trying his best to keep his voice steady. Hyunseung shook his head, feeling his heartbeat quicken. “It means love at first sight. And what about lavender roses?” Junhyung asked again. Hyunseung shook his head once more, and Junhyung smiled lightly. “Well, it coincidentally means love at first sight.”

Hyunseung flushed, not knowing how to respond. Nobody had ever been that sweet to him before. Well, given that he’s only been in one other relationship, but not even his family did something similar for him before. So Junhyung really did fall for me at first sight?

“Seungie?” Junhyung called out, snapping Hyunseung out of his trance. “Let’s eat?”

Hyunseung nodded, putting the rose in his lap before beginning to eat. He and Junhyung took turns feeding each other. If there was any way to describe the couple, it would be that they were sickeningly sweet. Hyunseung giggled every now and then, and Junhyung let out an occasional chuckle. Both of them had smiles glued onto their faces for the entire dinner, both enjoying their first date as an official couple.

After they finished the food, Junhyung told Hyunseung to wait and left. Hyunseung stared at Junhyung, wondering what else the younger male had planned. Junhyung returned not long later with small velvet box in hand. When Junhyung placed the box in front of Hyunseung, the elder male’s eyes widened and he looked at Junhyung in surprise.

“Open it,” Junhyung said when Hyunseung made no move to look at the contents of the box. Hyunseung took a deep breath and nodded, lifting the lid of the box slowly. He could pretty much guess what was in the box already, but he was still shocked when he saw a ring nestled inside.

“Junhyung…” Hyunseung trailed off, unable to find the word to describe his feelings. Junhyung shook his head, signalling that he understood. He took the ring out of the box and slipped it on the elder’s left ring finger. Hyunseung looked at the ring and noticed a name engraved on it. “‘Yong Jaesoon’?”

“That’s the name given to me by my paternal grandparents. I changed it after my umma passed on, but I think it was best to use my birth name,” Junhyung told Hyunseung, showing his own ring with the name ‘Jang Hyunseung’ engraved on it.

Hyunseung bit his lip, smiling at Junhyung. “I love it.”

The elder male stood up and hugged Junhyung, pressing his lips against the other’s in a loving kiss. When they pulled apart, both were grinning widely. Junhyung automatically laced Hyunseung’s fingers with his, and they left the restaurant together.

When Junhyung dropped Hyunseung off at his apartment, Hyunseung was still smiling. They shared their last kiss for the night and, as Junhyung was getting back into his car, Hyunseung shouted, “I love you!”

Junhyung grinned like a love struck idiot, shouting back, “I love you too!”

Hyunseung watched his boyfriend drive off, looking at his ring again.

A promise, huh? I’ll keep this promise till the end, Junhyung-ah.
