It was the first snow of the year when I was born. So, when the wind is biting cold and the leaves are bone-dry, I am most alive.

I fancy the winter, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape -- the trees and the views in all its beauty, the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show. It always gives me hope, the icy air has that invigorating effect in me --I am at my happiest when it is cold. And so it follows that when the snow melts down into fine glitter moist, when winter is almost over, it seemed right that I should go with it.

It was the first snow of the year and I was standing in the middle of the road. It must've been near midnight because all the shops were closed and the only sound was my laboured breathing and the inaudible snivel of the unmoving figure slumped like a crumpled pile of blankets in front of me. A cold wind was blowing from the north, and it made the trees rustle like living things. Slowly, I raised my left hand and pointed it to the lump in front of me. I tried to control the shaking of my hand but I couldn't -- the mixture of bitter cold air and the weight of the loaded gun made it impossible to do so. The figure tried to look at me, a flicker of recognition was seen in his eyes. Or perhaps it was hope. It was hard to tell.

Then a gunshot pierced through the night.
