Graveyard

My Oneshot Collection

“Come on, hurry up G! We don’t have long to get in, visit Alex and get home.”

“Yeah, yeah. We have 2 hours, retard.”

Hi, I’m Georgina, but most people call me Gina, or G. My friend Siobhan and I are at the cemetery to visit my sister Alexandra. She passed away exactly 10 years ago today, and we’re visiting her.

“Hey, do you remember where she was buried.”

I thought about this for a second. “Um, I haven’t been here in years, I’m not sure…” I lead Siobhan towards the roundabout nearest the entrance, and smiled.

“Okay, I remember this. The first road leads to shops, and the second leads to Alex. So it’s this way.” I pointed down the second road and smiled.

The two of us were walking down the side of the road, the same way as usual. Me, on the concrete edge so as not to walk on the road, yet not on the grass. And Siobhan, walking almost in the middle of the road.

“Hey, G, can we go to the shops after, and have a look?”

“Sure,” I replied “I’ve never been there though. The last time I came here a couple of years ago, my dad said ‘Look over there. That road leads to your sister. Don’t go down the first path. That leads to the shops.’”

“Haha.” Siobhan laughed quietly to herself.

“What?” I asked, curious.

“That sounds like something from ‘The Lion King’.”

I sighed

“You’re just that sort of person, aren’t you.”

“You know it!” She laughed as she held her hand up. I put my hand up to hers and we did our usual secret hand shake.

It didn’t take long to get to Alex, past the first and second roundabouts, then turn left to the ‘Garden of Angels’, sadly one of many children’s areas.

“Hey Siobhan, if I remember correct, she’s second row, on the right side.” As we trudged forward towards her grave when I remembered something my dad had told me.

“Hey, when you see Alex's grave, have a look at the shape. There’s a story behind it.”

She tilted her head at me, “Please tell.”

“Well, when my parents were deciding on a shape, they didn’t want something too pretty, and walking through the cemetery they saw a flame shaped grave. They got the man who cuts graves to cut that shape, and then told him to cut a slab off the side. There it is, see?”

By now, we were only a few metres away.

“Wow, it looks so cool.”

I walked forwards and wiped the dirt off of the grave.

“It’s the only one of its kind in the world.”

Planting some small daisies in the dirt, I couldn’t help but stare for what seemed like years. Every time I came, I could feel the life drain out of my body. It had become inevitable.

“Hey G, look around. It’s gotten so dark! Haha, imagine if this was a scary story. That would be so cool.”

I looked up at Siobhan. “That’s your sort of thing, isn’t it? Well, we’ve been here long enough. Wanna go check out the shops before heading home?”

“Sure.”

The walk back to the shops seemed longer. We ended up taking a short-cut through some of the side paths next to the graves. The sky was a dark purple-blue, and crows were sitting in the trees, cawing at us as though they were trying to tell us something.

“Hey Siobhan, I just had an idea.”

“Yeah. What?” She asked, obviously uninterested, but I continued.

“I think I’ll write a horror story about this when I get home. It’s so creepy, it’s perfect.”

“What sort of story?”

I thought about this. “Well, I was thinking a horror one-shot.”

Without realising, we had reached the shops. The building looked like an old café. Flowers for sale out the front were withered, and there were cobwebs hanging from the veranda.

“I wonder if it’s open.” Siobhan whispered. I walked towards the door of the café and saw a sign.

-Monday - 9am – 6pm

-Tuesday - 9am – 6pm

-Wednesday - 12pm – 9pm

-Thursday - 9am – 6pm

-Friday - 9am – 6pm

-Saturday - 7am – 8pm

-Sunday - CLOSED

“Today’s Thursday, so it should still be open.” I tilted my head, wondering where everybody was.

“Hey G, let’s go inside!”

I rolled my eyes. “How can you sound so excited? Isn’t this creepy to you at all?”

“Nope.” Siobhan grinned, and ran to the door. It creaked as she opened it, and she looked back at me, losing her grin slowly. I raised an eyebrow at her.

“Please, don’t let my opinion disturb your little adventure, Siobhan.” I grinned at her. She smirked back, and went inside.

I stepped back a few paces, and watched the motionless building. There was nothing. No one to hear her scream...

"GAAAAAAH!!!" I screamed. I stepped back, fear tingling through my spine.

A light, dull and pulsating, could be seen from inside one of the windows on the 2nd floor. I stepped further back, reaching for my phone and calling Siobhan.

Her smiling face appeared on the screen.

“What’s wrong G? I heard you scream.”

“Which room are you in?” I asked immediately, and heard a tap coming from the house. She was on the first floor still, at the window waving at me.

“I haven’t been upstairs yet.” She said.

My breath halted. “Get out of there. Now.” I ordered. Her face turned to a bored stare.

“Aw, are you scared? Relax, there’s nothing in here. I would have noticed another person by now.”

I looked back up at the 2nd floor, but the light was long gone.

“I-I saw a light. On the 2nd floor. Are you sure there is no one there?” I asked.

She shook her head. “There is no light in here, not that I know of.”

She paused, and looked around. “I’m going to keep exploring.” She said, excitement evident in her tone.

“Seb, don’t. Please, don’t go upstairs!”

She hung up, and I gasped. The light was back, and it was on the 1st floor, in the room next to Siobhan.

I called her again, but there was no reply.

“Siobhan! Get out of there! Siobhan!” I screamed, terrified.

I felt a vibrating in my pocket. Answering my phone, I breathed a sigh of relief. Siobhan was laughing at me.
“I can hear you screaming. Relax!” She giggled.

“Siobhan, the light is in the next room. Get out of that house now!” I yelled at her. She seemed concerned.

“Georgina, there’s nothing here. Please, calm down. You’re scaring me.”

“I’m scaring you? I’M SCARING YOU!?” I screamed at her. “Seb, don’t go into the next room. Get out of there.”

“There’s nothing in here. Look.” She turned the camera around, and headed for the room. I looked at the house, and back at my phone. Back and forth, I kept looking, until; just as Seb stepped into the other room, I saw the light disappear.

“See? There’s nothing KYAAAAA!” She screamed. Through the screen, I saw a tall, dark figure, before her phone dropped and the screen went black.

I dropped my phone, stepping away from it. That figure, it was not human. Abnormally tall, black clothes, no face, just white. It was nothing from this planet.

I ran, out of the now pitch black graveyard. I ran through the trees, not stopping for anything. From the corner of my eye, I saw the figure, standing half a kilometre from me, his pale face shone in the moonlight.

I couldn’t scream. I kept running. Legs aching, I jumped over a fallen tree, not making the jump and collapsing to the ground. I wouldn’t look up. I couldn’t. Curled in a ball on the ground, bleeding and crying, I stayed there. All night, I wept, until I fell asleep.

And I was never seen again.
