Walking Through Memory Lane [One-Shot]

He opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling. he dreamt of her for the ninth time. Nine. The number simply reminded him of her. It was her lucky number, probably her favorite number too, but he didn't really know cos he never bothered to ask. He remained lying on his bed not because he's too lazy to get up but because he was still able to smell her scent though he had already changed the covers for few times after that sad happening.

She broke up with him but he still had no idea why. Why? He kept asking himself.

He felt the brushing passed his cheeks, He then glanced at the window. It was open. She preferred it open during summer cos she thought that the AC is just an artificial air. Summer breeze is better. Especially during the night... so we can cuddle! But summer was almost over. September's coming. He didn't have the chance to spend the summer with her.

He got up but he didn't bother to close the window. He had breakfast. He just had cereals. Eating cereals reminded him of her. When they just started dating and she'd come eat breakfast with him, they only ate cereals. But he changed the menu one day to rice.

You're in Korea. Koreans eat rice for breakfast.
Not everyone.
I do and who am I again?
My boyfriend?
Yes, that's right. I'm your boyfriend.

He looked around the kitchen, It's as if it was full of the sound of her laughter. It's as if he could still hear her.

He went to the bathroom to brush his teeth. As he brushed his teeth, he looked at his reflection at the mirror. He stopped moving. He saw her reflection next to his, both were smiling.

Oppa. she uttered so shyly.
Hmm? and he was contented hearing that word.
Let me brush your teeth!
No! Amber J. Liu, get away from me! and they chased each other around the bathroom.

Stupid. he uttered to himself as he threw his toothbrush at the mirror. That was what he thought he was; stupid for doing the same routine every morning. When will I ever forget?

he got out of the house. It was cloudy. The sun wasn't there but there was no rain either, But he was sure that the sky will cry with him later that day.

He wandered cluelessly at the street of Seoul not really caring where his feet would bring him. He passed by her favorite bubble tea place. He always did. He'd walk four steps past it and he's stop. He'd go in and buy a bubble tea for himself and he'd always mistake mentioning "two bubble t--I mean one bubble tea, please." thinking that he wa with her. The same waitress served him everyday and she just got used to it.

Before drinking the last sip, he stopped. He remembered her again.

What is this? she asked him with her husky angry tone.
A cup. and he was being sarcastic.
You should drink even the last drop of your tea.
Why?
Because.... she was thinking of a reason and he was smiling cos he found her thinking face very adorable.
Because I said so.
If you kiss me, I'll finish my tea.
I'll kiss you if you finish your tea. and he drank the whole thing up that even the last drop didn't escape him.
Can I have a kiss now?
I changed my mind.

He felt cheated and pouted. Then he grinned again having a really crazy idea. He gave her a peck on her cherry lips. She blushed the moment it happened. It wasn't their first kiss and she didn't mind him surprising her but she just felt like blushing cos that's just how girls normally react.

He started walking again. Still aimlessly. Though he knew he was not clueless, he pretended he was. His feet brought him to the only place where most of his memories of her were. He sat on the bench at the corner of the park and listened to his iPod. Drunken Truth immediately started playing. It was the same song that got them together and no they weren't drunk.

2008

It was at the park--at that very corner. There was this bench. All other benches were well-furnished but that bench at the very corner wasn't. And since he was too nice as a living creature, he felt really sorry for the bench and so he decided to sit on it thinking that it needed his company. He looked up at the sky. It was sunny and he liked it. He thought it was one of the most perfect days during that year. He closed his eyes and let the air touch his face.

She was walking around the park looking for a place to relax. Every bench  was taken and she happened to pass by that old bench. She sat at the other end of the bench ignoring him. She thought that he was asleep so she didn't bother to as his permission to sit there.

He suddenly started humming a certain song that she was very familiar with and soon, he was singing the song.이렇게 널 사랑해 어설픈 나의 말이 촌스럽고 못미더워도 그냥 하는 말이 아냐 She listened to his voice and she actually found it very mesmerizing. 두 번 다시 이런 일 없을거야. She closed her eyes as well. His voice was so relaxing she could fall asleep just by listening to it but she chose not to cos she preferred listening to his voice rather than sleeping.

아침이 밝아오면 다시 한 번 널 품에 안고 사랑한다 말할게 He opened his eyes but he was still singing. Then he noticed her. He stopped. She opened her eyes and glanced at him. Why did you stop singing? she asked. Oh, you want me to sing? I wouldn't mind. Okay. he didn't know why but he couldn't seem to take away his eyes off her. It's as if there was an eye magnet on her face. And no it wasn't her androgynous appearance that caught his eyes. But there was just this something special that he could see on her. Yes, he was attracted to her for a reason he didn't know. Well? she was waiting for him to sing again. I... uh... forgot the lyrics. he scratched the back of his head and she laughed at him shyly.

Jinki. he bowed. He felt like he just had to know her.
Amber. she bowed back.

Ever since that day, they kept meeting each other at that same old bench at the corner of the park.

He was a little weirded of why, in all the girls he had seen and met, she was the one that he liked. He wanted a girl who dressed like one--wears skirt and dresses. He wanted a girl with long beautiful hair. She wasn't wearing any skirt and her hair was almost as short as his. But maybe, it was her llama-like face and personality and the fact that she still acted like a girl. He didn't really care whatever his reason for liking her. He liked her. Hell, he was in love with her.

Do you like me? he just had to ask her that day. There was no better time. Because like the season, he was falling even deeper for her and he wanted, by winter, to celebrate his birthday and christmas with her.
Cos honestly I-- he was interrupted by her soft lips that was already attached to his.

He felt tiny droplets falling on his face. The sky was finally crying for him. It was time to go home. The rest of the day, he stayed sitting on the couch thinking what he had done wrong for her to break up with him. They were always happy. They never fought. They always understood each other. They never had any problems. They'd been dating for more than 3 years with neither shedding tears for each other nor shouting at each other. They were a perfect couple. Perfect, maybe that's it. he said to himself. Maybe they were too perfect that she got really tired of it. But why didn't he got tired of their "perfect" relationship?

It was half past 12 when he got sleepy or at least he had already finished thinking about her or at least that's what he thought.

He lied on the right side of his bed. He lightly touched the left part of it. It's where she used to lie whenever she felt like sleeping at his place. His bed was really small that he himself hardly fit but when she came into his life, two people were able to fit on his bed.

Sleep over?
I'm sure it exists here,too.

It was already getting late and she was still at his place. She looked like she had no plan on leaving either.

Okay, I'll sleep on the couch and you can sleep on my bed. he had already grabbed a pillow.
Let's share your bed. she exclaimed.
You do see how small my bed is?
So? We can still share it, right? she grinned like a little kid which was extremely adorable.

The next thing he knew, they were trying their best to fit on his bed. He covered his whole body including his head with his blanket. It was his sleeping habit but she didn't seem to like it cos she kept pulling it off.

I'm sleepy.
Can't you sleep with that only covering your body?
I can't.
But I wanna see your face.

He laughed. He didn't think it was funny but he just didn't know how to react on what she said. He pulled her and kissed her warm forehead before covering both of their heads with the blanket.

It's dark. what she meant was she still couldn't see his face.
I don't like night lights. it was something he wanted her to know about him.

So he grabbed her hand and hold it tightly. At least we can still feel each other. She smiled. He couldn't really see her face but he knew she was smiling cos he was smiling as well.

He fell asleep hugging his pillow and with tears falling from his eyes. And for once, he didn't sleep with the blanket covering his head.

The next day he decided to go back to the park not doing the same routine he did for the last 3 months. Because that day was just special. It was the day when they first met each other. His eyes widened on what he saw. Not far from that old ugly bench, he stood motionless. She was there, sitting on that same bench as if she was waiting for someone.

He couldn't approach her. He was afraid.... afraid that she might have already moved on but he hadn't. He thought that it'd be embarrassing to talk to her saying that he wanted to go back together. What if she had moved on? But he thought, she wouldn't be sitting on that park bench on that special day if she had already moved on. So his feet started moving and soon he was sitting at the other edge of the bench where he usually sat.

Do you come here often? she asked though he's pretty sure that wasn't what she really planned to ask him but he didn't care cos he just really missed her voice.
Is everyday considered often? he asked back without looking at her. She wasn't looking at him either but they were still connected in some ways that they couldn't understand.
What about you?
Maybe as often as you. I don't know.
I see... her answer actually made him a little happy.

Wouldn't you ask why I broke up with you? this time she was looking straight at his eyes.
I'm sure you had your reasons.
What if I wasn't reasonable enough? he could feel pain from the sound of her voice.

But Jinki only wanted to know one thing Have you moved on? he was afraid of her answering that question. Even if she was there, he still had doubts. Then he saw tears falling from her eyes before shaking her head for so many times like a child telling her parents she didn't do anything wrong.

He moved closer to her and wrapped his arms around her. He patted her back and told her Stop crying. I hate it when you cry. He cupped her face as he wiped her tears away. He looked at her already red eyes before giving her a passionate kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she kissed him back. He felt butterflies in his tummy. The feeling that he had been missing though he didn't really know how it felt like. I'm sorry. she uttered to his ear. Do you still love me? she asked him not moving away from him. Of course! I still love you, you fool. then he kissed her again. I love you, too.

He didn't really care what her reason was for breaking up with him. Whether her reason was another guy or not, it didn't matter to him. Maybe their relationship wasn't perfect after all. It was almost perfect but never really perfect.
