The Days of Summer
한여름 (Han Yeoreum) or Summer, as she goes by now, was born in the southern city of Mokpo in South Korea but was raised in New York city. Summer was part of the more than a hundred thousand South Korean children adopted to the United States. Although raised by caucasian parents, her adoptive parents made their best effort to not make her and her adopted younger brother forget their heritage. They had a dol on their first birthdays and their parents would often take her to Koreatown. They even encouraged them to take Korean language lessons which she was more than happy too. She was a normal child growing up and appreciated everything her parents have done for her and her brother but she would often have the same question as many of the other children had when thinking about their infancy, "why didn't they want me?".
"Are you sure about this?" asked her mother
Summer smiled and sighed as she turned to look at the woman who had a worried look on her face. With her luggage by the door, she sat on the couch of the house where she grew up. Even though she had been living away from her parents and in the city for more than a decade, she always liked her parents house in the quiet suburb of Long Island. She moved to Manhattan for college, lived in London for her masters and PHD. She returned to New York for work because without fail, her answer would awlays be "New York" when asked where her favorite place was.
