Dreams

“Jinwoon-ah it’s Nicole! Call me back when you get this message.”

“Yah, Jung Jinwoon! Pick up your phone stupid!”

“You ignore me one more time and I will personally storm over to the company building and tell all the other trainees that you like big butts and you can not lie!”

Jinwoon and Nicole had been friends ever since, well, forever. He couldn’t ever think of a time in his life when Nicole wasn’t a part of it, because in all honesty, nothing really mattered before she walked into his life, or more like stumbled (the first time he met her was when she tripped in the school halls and had him tumbling down with her).

Sure in the beginning having her around was a hassle, what with her crappy Korean and that never-ending need to pester Jinwoon whenever she had the chance. But as they spent more time together and he got to know her more, he realized that maybe the kid wasn’t so annoying.

Her bright smile and eyes that would curve into crescent moons managed to brighten his day, everyday. Her foolishness was something he became immune to, and eventually took part in (in the winter she would chuck one snowball in his face, he would return ten in hers). Her clumsiness, well, that he became immune to too, catching her each time she threatened to fall and bruise that beautiful face of hers (this usually involved him sacrificing himself for her, he’d take a bullet for her any day, but since that would never happen, he’d stick with taking her falls for her).

Jinwoon couldn’t think what life without Nicole would be like. It’d save him a few bruises here and there, but it’d cost him his heart and happiness and he was in no hurry to lose those. Yet here he was, pushing her away from him, the girl that defined his life.

This was just another sacrifice he was willing to make for her.

Seven months ago, he sat through one of Nicole’s trademark rants, complete with Korean so quick that it was not understandable to the untrained ear, and slurs of what he believed to be English profanities. But through all of the unnecessary strings of curses, he got the message. DSP had reprimanded her for spending too much time foolishly hanging out with him rather than training and practicing. Her dream was on the line.

Jinwoon believed that maybe if he pushed Nicole away enough, that eventually she’d find the sense to stop chasing after him and start chasing after what was really important, her dreams. KARA, or at least that’s what Nicole said the group was called, was a once in a lifetime chance for her to become everything she had ever dreamed of, he wasn’t going to mess this up for Nicole.

He had been out of contact with her ever since that rant, catching himself from answering any of her calls, saving all the messages she left, just to hear her voice.

Jinwoon’s phone beeped as he received a text from an unknown number. Curious, he tapped the screen.

“Channel 18 now.”

Flopping on the couch, he the TV, glancing at his phone one more time before a familiar voice sounded from the TV.

There she was, just as when he last saw her, as beautiful as ever.

The doorbell rang, and it killed him to tear his gaze away from the screen. He mentally cursed whoever was behind the door and told himself that they had better have a good reason for interrupting the music video.

He opened the door, about to give a lecture on how people should not just show up without prior notice and that it’s rude and childish and just ugh! But he was left speechless.

“Aren’t you going to let me in? Or do you want me to get in trouble with the paparazzi? I’m a celebrity now you know!”

Still speechless, Jinwoon stood there as still as a statue. Nicole chuckled as she pushed him into the house.

“How did you last these months without me, can’t even answer the door correctly.”

He followed her as she made herself comfortable on his couch, staring at her as she flipped the channels.

“Jinwoon-ah, I know I’m beautiful, but it’s rude to stare.”

“What are you doing here?” He questioned seriously, although it was near impossible to get a serious answer out of Nicole.

“I’m watching TV”

“No, really. I ignored you for 7 months and you just show up one day and act as if nothing has happened, aren’t you going to say anything? Punch me? Slap me? Anything?”

“Why? You made my dream possible, I know what you were doing.”

“How?”

“Because love really is magical, that’s how I know”

At this moment, Nicole landed a quick peck on Jinwoon’s lips.

“And I love you, Jinwoon” she said softly.

“I love you too” he replied, with a shy smile.

“Oh and Jinwoon, can I tell you one more thing? The next time you post some cheesy stuff about dreams and sacrifice, make sure I’m not following you.”

His eyes bulged out as red began to seep into his cheeks. Damn you twitter, damn you, Jinwoon mentally cursed himself as Nicole continued to laugh.
