Bittersweet

Bittersweet

The bright rays of the sun were covered by the thick clouds hovering over the sky, making its rays less bright when it hits the land. The wind was steadily blowing as it brushed against the plants and the tress’ leaves rustled upon contact. It would’ve been a perfect day if it weren’t for her ipod that she forgot to charge before she left and now she had no music to accompany her with her quiet walk in the park. She was on her way to meet him for they promised each other to make time for each other despite the busy schedule. She would always pass by this park every time they would meet and on that perfectly fine day, she heard these notes being plucked out beautifully in a guitar and she couldn’t help but let her ears follow that tune that seemed to be calling her.

She stayed in a distance, making sure she wouldn’t be seen, remembering the last time she got caught and it was really embarrassing for her. Her eyes widened in amazement from learning whom those melodies were coming from. It was from the same boy whom she would always see under that tree with his guitar, playing an old song or literally trying to bang his head against the tree for some weird reason.

Her face softened and a smile formed on her lips when she saw him smiled in contentment. “It turned out pretty well.” The boy said out loud to his self.

“It sure did.” She whispered in the air as she looked for the sky in a bit, remembering the melody he was playing a while ago and the smile of the person who made it.

But just like any other day, there were still things she had to do and that she cannot afford to be distracted. She looked down on her feet as she went back to her path. The soft crunching of the fallen leaves that she stepped on as she made her way, reminded her of that day; a day she would never ever forget.

She was on the way to see him again and like the usual she passed this park and like the day today, for some weird reason she decided to settle with a music-less walk when a familiar tune she loved was suddenly all over the place. She couldn’t help but get attracted to it and mindlessly followed that tune, forgetting that there was someone waiting for her.

She forgot to keep distance and the next thing she knew she was listening to “Tears In Heaven” with her eyes closed and enjoying the music. She didn’t notice all of these, not even the rain that gave its sign for quite some time already. So when it started pouring, she ran with this boy she didn’t even know the name of but she didn’t mind even one bit when he held her hand and ran away to find some shelter. At that moment, she felt like she was running away from reality and everything that was going on at that time was a dream.

Sitting next to a stranger while he plays, holding another man’s hand in the rain, sharing a coat to keep them warm, everything felt so surreal. Never had she thought that someone else could actually make her heart skip a beat other than him but she couldn’t let anyone know and had to keep everything a secret.

Despite of what she felt, her heart already belonged to someone else.

“What are you thinking about?” A voice brought her back to reality, returning her to the contents of her present.

“It’s nothing.” She smiled softly to him as he hugged her from behind and she held the arms that were wrapped around her for a while before letting go.

“You seem happy. Were you thinking of me?” He as he smiled at her cheekily, and she just giggled at him and looked at him.

“No. I was thinking of someone else.” She admitted and he let go of her as he pouted.

“How can you think of someone else..” He said while still pouting and she couldn’t help but giggle over her boyfriend.

“Stupid, can you not conquer my thoughts all the time? That’s what I’m trying to say.” She touched the tip of his nose in amusement and he smiled instantly upon hearing her reply.

“I’ll try my best.” He boasted and ended the conversation with his loud laugh that earned a slap on the shoulder from her.

xx—xx

They decided to go for a walk and he, of all places to go to, had to suggest going to that park. She just nodded and gave him a soft smile as they walked together holding hands as they roamed aimlessly. And that was when they both heard that tune dancing in the air.

It had this sweet melody but the longing and sadness were distinct. It wasn’t too sad or too cheesy. It was a bittersweet melody that gives a feeling that you want to still be in love despite the pain it brings. It was two contradicting things mixed in one but it surprisingly worked out very well. It must have been because of the emotions were too pure and rare.

“Let’s go see him.” He suggested to her, knowing instantly who were making the melody upon hearing it.

She was left being dragged by him and she couldn’t do anything about it despite trying her best a while ago to not be seen by him. But it was too late to do anything. She was already standing there in front of him, holding someone else’s hand this time. He paused from playing and surprise was clearly written on his face but erased all traces of it when he smiled back at them.

“Hey,” He greeted them.

“Seunghyun ,” The other boy called him as he dragged her with him and sat next to the boy who was playing the guitar.

“What brings you guys here?” Seunghyun asked, unsure of what to feel.

He wanted to see her of course, especially since it had been a while already. But it seemed like he couldn’t see her anymore without being next to someone else. And just like the song he was playing, he was experiencing the bittersweet feeling of what this girl brought to him.

“We just heard you playing and, do you mind if we listen while you play? We really like your playing.”

“Jaejin,” She was about to talk him out to drop the idea but Seunghyun was already plucking the same notes that they heard not a very long time ago and she was silenced by them.

“It’s all right. You can listen as much as you want.” He smiled to her, that same smile he flashed to her the first time they talked, that same smile that caught her off guard, that same smile that made her heart skipped a beat. But she cannot entertain any of that for the person who was holding her hand at that moment already took her heart completely and she couldn’t let herself wander.

“Thank you.” She replied to him as they silently listened to Seunghyun playing that bittersweet melody that would make you wonder, why still fall in love with the heartaches?
