From the Ground, Up

Description

The Hive contained probably the most magnificent society in the unknown world.

Its people were technologically advanced, no one ever went hungry or bankrupt, and the majority of the population lived comfortably under the protective laws of the Queen and her Soldiers.

Some of these laws were strict, however, the citizens of the Hive understood it was to protect them from the chaos and dangers of the above-ground world, a world we called the Canopy.

Anyone that was fifteen years of age or older that disobeyed any of the Queen’s laws was to be banished from the Hive’s colony and brought up to the Canopy world with only a small suitcase of clothes and little chance of survival, forever to be marked as a criminal and an embarrassment to the colony, never to return.

Unfortunately, I became one of those people.

Foreword

“You have twenty-four hours. Tomorrow, at this time, a Collector will you out of the Hive.” The Queen paused, then gestured for one of her Soldiers. Without another word, my hair was lifted off my shoulders and my head was jerked downward.

I felt the Sting. I felt the tiny needles instantly puncture my skin and brand me with black, wretched ink. I ground my teeth and shut my eyes tight, doing my best to bear the burning sensation that crept up from my wound. The deed itself was instantaneous, but the pain still lingered.

It wasn’t my fault, I wanted to scream. I’m innocent. I needed her to hear it; I needed everyone to know the reason for my actions, but I knew that trying the Queen's patience was the last thing I wanted, especially then.

For a moment, I dared to open my eyes and lift up my head, peeking through the thin curtain of tangled hair that covered my face.

The older woman looked at me with disgust at the sight of my pleading, pathetic expression from her high throne. She turned away, then waved her hand at me, as if shooing away a small pest.

“Get her out of my sight.”
