Character Summaries:

The Park Family -

Reigning power in Joseon, members are expected to be scholars and hold the utmost level of honor when performing tasks. The family itself is the wealthiest in the country due to the presence of Park Daejung, the current residing King who was placed into power after his father, Park Bae's mysterious death a mere 6 years ago. Currently the family consists of two sons, Park Jungsu and Park Yoochun. Though no one mentions the fact aloud, Park Jungsu is the product of Park Daejung's illegitimate relationship with a gisaeng Shin Miyoung in the neighboring province, during the time of his conclusion of studies at Sungkyunkwan University. Though a mistake, his first son was accepted into the family and allowed to live with his father at the capital, however could never become king of the nation due to his mother's status as a gisaeng. The queen holds no grudges though, because he was born before they had even met. Known as Park Chungae, she is the most noble and virtuous of the Park family, her kindness known even in the far provinces of the country. The relationship between the King and Queen is a healthy one, one of the few of the time to be built on love instead of allocation of power.

Park Yoochun -

Youngest son of the king, and due to his highly studious and inquisitive nature has caught the eyes of the current heads of the country. Performing top in his studies, he is unmatched as far as intelligence and wit is concerned. He has a strong bond with his whimsical older brother, and often seeks advice from him on matters related to feelings due to his lack of knowledge in the particular subject. His father is currently preparing to marry him off to a good wife, in hopes that the aid of a stable family will help him to rise to power and keep a level head. He tries his best to avoid the subject matter altogether however, for he believes that it will only interrupt his study of Confucianism at Sungkyunkwan. The case however is that he simply isn't interested in relationships, as his older brother isn't interested in politics.

Park Jungsu -

Eldest son of the king, however due to his lack of interest in the country's affairs he has been overlooked as heir to the throne. However, no hard feelings are felt because of this between he and his younger brother Park Yoochun and they often make jokes surrounding the subject. He prefers to roam about the kingdom writing free-lance poetry, and is the author of many of the banned texts currently in print due to their liberal nature. He visits his mother Shin Miyoung often, though his trips to and from where she resides are kept in secrecy. Were any of the ministers to find out about his consistent trips there, his constant presence at a harem could pose problems for the king. Due to his friendship with the effervescent Kim Heechul, many whisper about the possibility of his preference to be homoual, however his views on life are simply more open than the majority of civilization.

The Yang Family -

Head of the family, Yang Hyo for many years had been the standing tutor for the crown princes Park Yoochun and Park Jungsu until they eventually earned the rights to enter Sungkyunkwan. His role as the Chief State Councillor gave him the level of influence just under the residing king. Though his main job was to advise the king with the aid of the Left and Right State Councillors, he was closest to the king as far as anything went and was even referred to by the king as a close friend along with Kim In Ho. Married to Yang Eun, they had four children Yang Eunsu, Yang Haneul, Yang Yoseob, and Yang Seungho. He is one of the fairest as far as his power in leading the country, the only one more virtuous than him to be the previously reigning King Bae.

Yang Eunsu -

Though Yang Eunsu was named after her mother, her birth having almost caused both of their deaths due to Yang Hyo having been at a Council meeting during her labor, she was found to take more after her father in the end. Wanting nothing more than to gain more knowledge, she was often punished for eavesdropping on her brother Yang Yoseob's lessons, her books filled with chinese-korean characters and confucian teachings instead of art and recipes. Though her father secretly delighted in her passion and would give her heartfelt pats to the head whenever he caught her secretly reading his books, it wasn't proper for a woman to be so studious. He often worries whether he'll be able to marry his youngest daughter off to a good man, and it keeps him awake sometimes for hours on end at night. Though open in mind to new things, her stubborn personality only allows for the acceptance of other's opinions if they are backed by evidence. Many of these debates occurring with the crown prince Park Yoochun, their relationship is a friendly yet tense one, her brother Yang Yoseob often having to step between the two to prevent them from ripping each other's throats out.

Yang Haneul -

The pride of her mother and the most-sought woman in Joseon, Yang Haneul was the utter perfection of what the model wife was to be. She was gifted in sewing and exceptional in her cooking, and on top of that she had a beauty almost unmatched in the nation. Men often visit the house to even glimpse her beauty, however are always turned away by her overprotective siblings. Yang Haneul secretly wishes she had more skill in studies like her sister, just as Yang Eunsu wishes that she had the capability to be as beautiful as her sister. However, the only books she finds herself reading are those of a romantic nature, her heart wishing to soar into the sky though she remains trapped on the ground. Perhaps that was why she was named Haneul, or Sky, for though her body is always here her mind is always elsewhere. This unique aura may be what seems so attractive to the men around her, her eyes always in a wishful haze as she gracefully walks from place to place. She hopes one day to find a man that sees her not for her beauty, but for the individual she is inside her heart.

Yang Yoseob -

Second eldest in the family, Yang Yoseob is currently a scholar at Sungkyunkwan University and roommates with the crown prince Park Yoochun. Friends from a young age, they had studied and taken their entrance exams together in order to attend the prestigious university for scholars. Though not as naturally bright-minded as his friend, Yang Yoseob was no joke either when it came to recitation and composition. Always optimistic, he strongly aided his sisters Yang Eunsu and Yang Haneul in whatever means they were trying to achieve, often the source of information for the former and public protector for the latter. Though he would never freely admit to it, he was who initially inspired Eunsu to study the subjects of male scholars. The reason? He didn't want to be alone in his preparation, so when his attempt at teaching Yang Haneul failed miserably, his last resort was Yang Eunsu. Whenever they would all go to the market together, Yang Yoseob would have to distract men while Yang Eunsu would protectively help Yang Haneul to escape their piercing eyes. He serves as their protector, his constant energy and positive-thinking what ultimately supports the family.

Yang Seungho -

Eldest son of the Yang family, Seungho was the least responsible as far as his studies were concerned. He threw away pretenses and went abroad in search of his future, forgoing his studies at Sungkyunkwan and removing himself temporarily from the registry. Though seen as the most inadequate due to his choices, as far as intelligence was concerned he was even more intune with his surroundings than his younger brother Yang Yoseob. Common sense came naturally to him, and he often felt suspicious of the government even though his own father was one of the main leaders. The relationship with Yang Haneul and Yoseob is a strong one, though most assume he's not fond of the youngest Yang Eunsu. Whether due to her interests or past encounters is unsure, all that is clear is that he seems to ignore the girl completely most of their time spent together. Not one to take friends easily, he seems to have somewhat of a superiority complex and thinks himself better than others. However with events to come, the hard shell on his heart is shattered and he is the most supportive in taking care of his famiy, just under his father.

The Kim Family -

Slightly more conservative, however just as finely dressed is Kim In Ho, father of Kim Heechul and Royal Secretariat to the king. He is close with the Chief State Councillor Yang Hyo and the king Park Daejung, the three prominent in decision-making. Though his views on matters may be slightly skewed, he has a good head on his shoulders. After the death of his wife during the birth of his son Kim Heechul, he was never able to re-marry and never wished to do so in the future. He believed that remarrying would tarnish his wife's memory, of which he wanted to remember always and forever. When in deep thought he is often found reflecting on the stars in the night sky, one of his late wife's fans held tightly to his heart as he seeks guidance.

Kim Heechul -

Known for the air of mystery that follows him everywhere, Kim Heechul tends to show his eccentricity in the way that he only dresses in the finest clothing. He has a fond interest for foreign goods, and often travels to neighboring provinces in order to claim fine wares. During his travels, it is often when accompanying his roommate and closest friend Park Jungsu when he visits his mother. His playboy tendencies attribute to his great affinity for finding out information, the entire female population being pulled along by him on an invisible string. Though a Sungkyunkwan scholar, many mistake his lazy attitude for someone ill-fit to study at the university. However, the case remains that his pompousness is a cover for his extensive knowledge, preferring others to believe him incapable when in actuality he's one of the most gifted at the university. Park Jungsu is the only one aware of this fact, and the closeness they share is often mistaken for homouality due to Kim Heechul's touchy nature and lack of the belief that every human has their own personal space.

The Choi Family -

Known for their strength and loyalty, the Choi family has bred the leading members of the royal guard for generations. Current Minister of Defence, Choi Kwan is in charge of the armed guard that protects not only the king, but the citizens of the nation as well. Never referred to by name, his strict governing is both calming and unnerving at once. His two sons Choi Siwon and Choi Seunghyun lead his forces, their life purposes determined at their birth. Protect the king, and if at all possible, stay alive in the process. Choi Kwan's relationships with women entirely based on day-to-day activities, he often hires consorts in his wait for a young and beautiful wife. Hard-headed in nature, once he finds a suitable woman it will be almost entirely improbable to alter his mindset. He also has a daughter by the name of Choi Hana, who he wishes to marry off to Park Yoochun in order to ensure his position under the king.

Choi Siwon and Choi Seunghyun -

Although they are fraternal twins and therefore don't look completely alike, their tall builds and quiet dispositions could convince almost anyone that they were one and the same. Raised in almost brutal means, they were bred into the perfect weapons of war. But even though they had no choice in the matter, they willingly aid their father in helping protect the king. They may have had other dreams when younger, but they were suppressed in favor of not being punished for having individual thought. Due to this, the two are often silent and don't voice much in the way of opinions. However, get them drunk enough and they might talk your ears off. Having that much intel and not having anyone to discuss it with they often are isolated, much of their time spent training and monitoring the markets when crime is low.

The Lee Family -

Lee Jaehwa, the current Daesaseong in charge of Sungkyunkwan is father to Lee Joon and Lee Donghae, both of which he believes not up to his expectations. He often wonders to himself whether he went wrong in their teachings, however prides himself on the fact that they are the residing leaders at Sungkyunkwan. What's more, the fact that they were voted into power by the scholars themselves seemed to amaze him, thinking that he might have to intervene in scholarly affairs were they not to be chosen. Entirely too curious in nature, he is often found eavesdropping on the scholar's conversations, the only ones protected to be his sons and the crown princes Park Yoochun and Park Jungsu.

Lee Joondong_hae_1641.jpg

Lee Joon and Lee Donghae -

Misfits of the university, brothers Lee Joon and Lee Donghae comprise the small percent of the Sungkyunkwan population that made it into the university on pins and needles. Perhaps it was because their father is the Daesaseong of Sungkyunkwan that they were admitted, however they aren't remarkable as far as intelligence goes in any way. Often the ones to cause trouble on campus, they are also held in fear due to Lee Joon's status as the current Student Body President. They have a particular hatred for Park Yoochun and Yang Yoseob due to their natural apt for knowledge, while the Lee brothers often struggled in passing their Gwageo examinations. Lee Donghae's status as the dongsaeng left him only following the wills of his hyung, afraid to voice his own opinions on anything, especially wherever Park Yoochun and Yang Yoseob were concerned. Leaders of the Sungkyunkwan scholars, they attempt to exert their power over the student body by consistently challenging the two to anything they can come up with. This competition stems only from a need for acceptance, not actual ill thoughts towards Park Yoochun and Yang Yoseob.

Picture of Jonghyun & Onew

Kim Jonghyun and Lee Jinki -

Cousin of the eccentric Kim Heechul, Kim Jonghyun chose to put off his studies and open a bookstore in the market with fellow Lee Jinki, cousin to Lee Joon and Lee Donghae. With his cousin's insistence he sells Park Jungsu's often banned texts among his volumes, their bookstore's run-ins with the local royal guard numerous. However, due to he and Lee Jinki's affinity for mischief, they often find canny means of escaping the law and continue to make a profit. With Lee Jinki's cousin's help, they often have Sungkyunkwan scholars knocking on their door willing to copy volumes for greater production and distribution. However if ever asked to copy one of Park Jungsu's texts, they often blush and ask for other volumes to peruse.
