Gazes
Do dreams turn to dust?
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Kai’s Point of View
“How’re you?” She takes a seat beside me and nonchalantly holds my hand. Kai, please take control of your eyes. They’re widening by the minute.
“I’m alright. My head feels like lead and so do my limbs.” I answer her calmly despite my hammering heart. “How long was I out anyway?”
“Six hours.” She replies so briefly and she can’t seem to hold my gaze. What’s wrong Rin?
“Are you okay? You look uncomfortable.” I try. She looks at me with question lingering in her eyes. I give her hand a squeeze and she gave me a small smile in return.
“I am.” She pauses. “Jesus, I was so worried about you.” Her voice breaks and so does she. Her eyes water and within seconds her tears come falling. I immediately take her into my arms, ignoring my pounding head and heavy limbs. To my relief, she returns the embrace.
“Please don’t cry, Rin.” My own eyes are starting to blur. Nobody has ever cried for me like this since mom, and she had a pretty damn good reason then. That was when we just found out that she wouldn’t last for a year. And just like that she cried, threw herself to me and said, “I won’t get to see my grandchildren!”
Oh, Rin. I can’t believe you’d cry over something so trifle. But I can’t blame you. There is now a sweet, steady smile lingering on my lips as I fight back the urge of crying.
I keep her there, rocking her back and forth. Soothing her, as she gasps in little sobs. My dad has come back to the room, but I dismiss him softly. He makes a face before he submits and creeps back out into the hall.
“I didn’t know what to do when I found you unconscious on the floor.” She finally says. She has pulled away and is wiping her face with the back of her palms; her eyes are red and swollen. I laugh at the sight of her; “You’re beautiful even when you cry. Did you know that?”
She stares at me, eyes wide with surprise. A lone tear cascades down her face and before it completely falls, I tenderly run my thumb across her cheek. “You don’t have to shed tears anymore, Rin.” I tell her.
This time, she lunges herself at me. “I know.” She buries her face into my chest as I fondle her soft, dark hair.

I can hear my alarm clock go off. I sleepily reach out to my bedside table in search for it but someone turns it off for me.
“Good morning!” A soft voice utters gleefully in my ears. I open my eyes and see the sun shining through my window and Rin freshly bathed. Her hair, wet and all tangled up. “I came as soon as I could.” She smiles as she brushes my hair as if to get a better view of my face. “How’re you feeling?”
“Better.” My voice has gone hoarse. I clear my throat and try again, “Better.”
“You have to stay in today. Uncle already called the school.” She sits on my bed and fixes my blanket. I feel like a kid all over.
“But I can handle it. I’m fit as a fiddle!” I attempt to sit up but blood rushes to my head that causes the room to spin. I groan a bit as she gently pushes back into my pillows.
“No you’re not. Not yet.” She’s suppressing a giggle. I can see it in her smile. She’s looking prettier than usual. Is it the way her eyes sparkle?
“You’re laughing at me, aren’t you?” I tell her, threat accompanying the question.
“Maybe.” She winks at me and she sits back into her spot. “By the way, I meant to ask you something last night.”
Her mood has shifted. “What is it?”
“What were you doing in that room?” Question fills her eyes. I find the words to answer her but in the end I was only capable of saying,
“Dancing.”
Her expression so
