Secrets of the Past

Description

GuiGui wakes up in an orphanage with no memory of her past. When she's nineteen, she starts going to the nearby high school and meets two guys who seem awfully familiar. She gets a feeling that they can help her regain her memories. A blank image of the boy who carried her to the orphanage keeps on crossing her mind. She didn't get to see him but she felt really close to him. Maybe, just maybe, one of these two guys is him, and he can tell her everything about her and her family back then. Hopefully, her memories will come back soon.

Foreword

"Give me the key, damn woman," a man in black commanded. The woman in his hand, whom he was grasping by her shirt's collar, was struggling her breath, refusing to obey the man's wishes.

"Gui! Get away from here," the women's voice shouted inside my head before a blanket of red cleared the image.

My eyes fluttered open and I sat up, breathing hard. I wiped my head with the back of my hand and found that I had been sweating That was when I realized my surroundings. I was in a small, empty room covered in pastel-colored wallpaper. There was a small table at my bedside with a glass of water, bowl of cereal, and lamp on it. I turned around and narrowed my eyes at the sight of the bright orange sun. I blindly reached for the curtains and closed the light's path.

I rubbed my eyes and swung my legs over the bed. What had happened yesterday? I sat there motionless, trying to remember the events of the day before. I shook my head when nothing came to mind. Then, I froze. I couldn't even remember anything from the day before yesterday, or anything after that. A strong chill of fear rushed into my spine. I placed my head between my knees and thought harder.

Before my brain was about to explode, I heard voices coming from the outside.

"Did he say what his name was?" a lady asked.

"No," replied a deep male voice, "he just brought her here, handing me this envelope, then left."

"Poor boy. He seemed so sad when we told him the girl lost her memories"

The door knob clicked and I quickly sat back in my bed.

"I see you're awake, miss," the man said. He was so tall, it practically seemed like there was a giant tower next to her,

"How are you feeling?" I turned my attention to the small looking women next to him. She had a pale complexion and seemed as fragile as a china doll.

"Wh-where am I?" I stuttered, not knowing how to react.

"You're at our orphanage, sweety," her voice seemed so gentle, maybe even angelic. "My name is Anne and this is my husband, Marcus," she said, pointing to the towering man next to her.

"Read this," the man said, handing me an orange envelope.

I took the package from him, not losing eye contact.

"We'll give you some alone time to think," Anne said after a couple seconds of silence.

I watched as they closed the door behind them and then turned back to the envelope. I looked back at the door, hoping they would come back in. But no luck.

I hesitantly opened the neatly sealed envelope and took out it's contents. I gasped when I saw a picture of me. I don't remember where it was taken but based on the smile on my face, I seemed incredibly happy.

I gently placed the image on the table and noticed the paper that was also inside the envelope. It read:

Dear Anne and Marcus,

Please take care of our little GuiGui and keep her safe from harm. We deeply regret having to part with our thirteen year old daughter so soon, but we must. There are a group of people after our family's money. Once we're gone, they'll be coming after her next. Our daughter is wearing a locket with a map to where the money is. The only way to open it is to find someone with it's key. We have entrusted that key to someone we trust very much. When she is ready, tell her to go find them. I'm sure she would know who we're talking about right away. And tell her we love her. She is the most important person to us and we will always watch over her and love her, wherever we are.

Love, Mr and Mrs. Wu, her parents.

My eyes began to tear up as I read the last sentence of the letter that was neatly hand written. "I'm sorry mom, dad," I said as tears began escaping from my eyes, "I don't remember anything." I shook my head, disappointed in myself. My parents entrusted me with something so important and I can't remember it. Then, I remembered something.

"A-anne?" I said out loud, wiping away my tears as best I could.

Less than a second later, she opened the door. "What is it, sweety?" Ann said, sitting on my bed and helping me clean my face.

"Who were you talking about outside?" I said after I calmed myself down a bit.

Anne look at the window behind me while saying, "he didn't tell us who he was. We opened our door to find a boy about your age carrying you on his shoulders. He gave you and the letter to us, telling us to keep you safe. I was going to invite him in but he quickly ran into a dark blue jeep with two other people and they drove off."

Tears returned to my eyes again. He could have been the one my parents were talking about, and I was asleep through it all.

"Shh, sweety. You'll be fine living with us," Anne said, trying to comfort me. "Maybe you'll run into him someday."

I nodded then leaned into her shoulders, letting out what was left of my sobs. Her body seemed so warm, so gentle. I felt something poking me and I pulled back. I looked down to find the lock my parents were talking about, dangling down my neck.

"C-can I have some time alone?" I asked.

Anne nodded with a smile and left the room.

I examined the lock and traced it's pattern with my finger. I turned around and reopened the curtains, only to allow the bright sun to shine through again. I opened the window and felt the warm breeze rush in, blowing my hair back and out of my face. I rested my head on my arms which were on the base of the window and closed my eyes.

Maybe I will see him again someday...
