PROLOGUE

Come as you might, you can never persuade him to have a date with you at the amusement park. He’s busy with cases he says in a halfhearted voice that annoys you to death. He’s busy as if you’re not the loyal high school friend who stood by him when he retired at the police department to start a private detective firm.  He’s busy as if you are not the encouraging voice who told him he’s going to be a great and successful detective. He’s busy you are not his girlfriend.

                You told him this, poured forth everything you feel about his utter disregard for you. He stood listlessly and gave you his most soothing words of apology. He would find time, he says as if you ar just one thing he should do when there’s nothing else.

                You stomped away from his damp office without even bothering to say goodbye, leaving him in his world where crime and murder were the norm.  you didn’t tell him you’re going. Why should you? He hardly cares when you come to visit him, much less when you leave without a word.

                You walked without any apparent heed to your surroundings, all the time reminiscing about the old times when he used to be the Donghae everyone adores. Back then when he used to be the boyfriend you love. You met him many years ago when you were still a foolish prepubescent girl who thinks she has the world in her mercy. You foolishly walked on a dark alley and was threatened by a gang of ruffians. You could have been molested had not for him, who came at just the right nick of time. He, a mere adolescent has overpowered the scoundrels with moves that seems to have been imitated from a Bruce Lee movie. He walked you home, telling you to be more careful and watch more Bruce Lee. He’s your first love and your second is Bruce Lee.

                The next time you met him was a few years later, when you were a mere freshman in high school.  He’s a senior and a kingka and you, just an ordinary girl with metal braces on your teeth.  You bravely introduced yourself to him despite having the constant fear that he might not recognize you. But he did! He said you were the person who set his dreams to be a detective.  You remarked that he will be great and successful just like Sherlock Holmes. He beamed with earnest pleasure and the two of you became intimate till he graduated next year. One thing led to another and you became couples.  You were not sure however whether he really loves you. But you love him and that ‘s what matters.

                He went to a cop school but retired a year later because he’s more inclined on being a private detective. You supported him on his decision and helped him gather his funds to start his practice which after a few months has increased due to his good reputation. You are a highly-acclaimed fashion designer and like your boyfriend was successful in their own areas but you are not satisfied. You crave for his affection and yet can’t get it.

                He can’t deduce your heart. That’s what you think but he knows, as you would come to know that your beloved woman’s heart is the conundrum that not even the best detectives could solve.
