Popular Girls Finish First

Description

Park Bom doesn't like the glamour of popularity and has gone out of her way to avoid being in the spotlight, but if getting into the "in crowd" is what it takes for the guy of her dreams to finally notice her, she's willing to take every chance she gets. Read more~

Foreword

Bom POV

"Omo!" I squealed, falling to my knees. I blushed and grabbed my glasses and books.

I looked up in the face of Siwon and frowned. "Why did you push me, jerk?"

He and his friends laughed and he turned to walk away. "C'mon guys--"

"Hey s! Leave her alone."

Chaerin, one of the popular girls, walked up to me and grabbed my hand, helping me up. She brushed my shoulders off and fixed my hair. "Don't worry about them. Siwon is a douchebag."

She smiled. "Have I meet you before? You look so familiar."

I nodded. We've been going to school together since sixth grade, when she moved to Seoul from France, but I didn't want to ruin the moment by calling her out and making her feel bad.

She shrugged. "I guess I've just never noticed you before."

I didn't feel bad. Most people, even the ones that I'd been going to school with forever, have failed to acknowledge my existence. I pushed my glasses up my nose and gripped my books tighter.

Chaerin smiled at me, playing with my hair. "You're, like, really pretty."

I smiled. "Thank you."

I felt a bit intimidated. Never has a person like Chaerin talked to me about anything for this long, and in most cases, it was just to ask for a pencil or the answers to homework. I felt the need to look around me to make sure no one had eggs to throw at me and humiliate me. Hopefully Chaerin wasn't that type of person.

She grinned, flashing her perfect, pearly white teeth and still playing with my hair. "You should totally sit with us at lunch today."

I blushed and shook my head. "Oh, I have a lot of studying to do during lunch. Big test this afternoon." I preferred eating lunch by myself in the quad, and if I was in the mood to put up with her, maybe with my sister, but I wasn't going to tell Chaerin that.

She pouted, letting my hair go. "Aww, boo...well, I'll catch you later. Bye...err?"

I looked down at my feet. "Bom."

She smiled. "Aww, how cute. Bye Bom!" She turned and waved her fingers at me.

I grimaced and continued on to get to my class before the bell.

~~

"Aww, Bom. You're later than usual. I wanted to talk to you about the ending of the book."

I smiled at Jiyong. "You finished it?"

He grinned, passing me back my copy of 'Kite Runner'. "Yeah. I wanted to talk to you about it, but maybe later we can--"

"Hey, did you do last night's homework?"

I turned around and my heart skipped a beat.

Choi Seunghyun, object of my affection since the fifth grade. We were outside for recess and Seunghyun had followed me around the playground. He stared at me for awhile then leaned in and mashed his lips against mine. I remembered how mad I was.

"What'd you do that for?" I whined, rubbing my lips with my hand.

He frowned at me. "You're my girlfriend now."

I shook my head, my pigtails shaking from side to side. "No, I'm not. I don't wanna date a meanie like you."

"Well, I don't wanna date you either!"

He pushed me and I fell onto the ground, where a rock cut deeply into my cheek. I'd been sent to the nurse's office and he was sent to the principal's office. I also remember how embarrassed I felt, having his parents come over with an 'I'm sorry' cake for me and having Seunghyun apologize to me. When our parents were busy talking, he pulled me out in the hallway and made me a deal.

"Look, if you be my girlfriend, I promise not to kiss you again."

I frowned. "Boyfriends and girlfriends are supposed to kiss though."

He smiled at me. "Do you want to kiss?"

I shook my head, sticking out my tongue. "No! That's disgusting! I don't wanna be your girlfriend either." I stuck my tongue out at him and he frowned, pushing me again.

I yelled and grabbed his leg, pulling him down on the floor, where we wrestled until our parents pulled us apart.

Once we moved up to junior high, Seunghyun experienced the growth spurt of a lifetime, forgot about making me his girlfriend, and became the school's baseball hero. Now he was the star player of our school's baseball team, the object of every girl's affection, and one of the most popular boys in school.

I felt silly for liking him, but always remembered the fact that Seunghyun wanted me first.

I smiled and nodded. "Yeah."

He grinned, knocking out my senses with his gorgeous smile. "Can I see your answers? I'll give them right back."

I quickly fumbled through my book bag and handed him my homework sheet. He smiled and took the paper. "Thanks. You're the best."

I grinned and turned back to Jiyong, who was not impressed.

"Thanks. You're the best," Jiyong said in a weak impersonation of Seunghyun. He scoffed and rolled his eyes. "He's such a tool. Thinks he can get whatever he wants."

I rolled my eyes, poking Jiyong. "Are you jealous because I never let you borrow my homework?"

He shook his head. "No! It's just...why does he always have to ask you for your homework? There are 24 other people in this class he could have asked. Why you?"

I smiled, putting my head on his shoulder. "Aww, my Jingyo is jealous!" I giggled and poked his cheek.

"Hey!"

I immediately sat back up and smiled at Seunghyun. "Yes?"

He handed me back my homework, smiling. "Thanks. And...um, do me a favor and ask your boyfriend to stop giving me death glares."

My mouth dropped and I shook my head. "Jagiya? Ani-ania!"

Jiyong began to laugh and I frowned, hitting him on his arm. "This is your fault!"

~~

"I think Mom switched our lunches."

I looked up as Dara walked towards me, rummaging through her purse. "What?"

Dara put a sandwich on my table and pointed to it. "You know I don't like the crusts on my bread."

I shrugged, rolling my eyes as I continued to eat my sandwich. "So? Pull them off. Don't be a spoiled brat."

Dara sighed and took a seat across from me. "Wanna tell me why Chaerin Lee is walking around telling everyone that you're BFFs?"

I almost chocked on my sandwich as I looked up at her. "What?!"

Dara nodded, picking at her nails. "Yup. She asked me if I knew you." She began laughing, completely ignoring the fact that I did not find the joke funny. It was one thing having a cute and popular sister that was junior class president, varsity cheerleading captain, and everyone's best friend. It was another when no one even believed that we were related.

Dara smiled, clasping her hands. "Maybe this could finally be your chance to be popular!"

I rolled my eyes, focusing on my food. "I'm perfectly fine the way I am. I don't need to be popular to be happy."

"If you were popular, maybe a certain Choi Seunghyun would ask you out." She said in a singsongy voice, teasing me.

If I was popular...
