Foreword
“OH MY GOD! I GOT IN! I GOT IN THE PROGRAM!” I screamed hysterically, from the lounge room. Six months ago, I applied for an exchange student program in South Korea, where the selected applicants stay with a Korean family and experience life like a native. Before and ever since I sent in the application form, I had been learning and practising Korean just in case I was selected. And I was!
“You got in!” my grandmother says excitedly, giving me a big hug when I walk through the door to the kitchen where everyone was. “I’m so proud of my baby girl!”
With tears in her eyes, my mother says, “Congratulations, Sweetheart.”
“Good job, Emma.” My grandfather says.
I read the form over to find out the name of the family I’m staying with, only to find out it’s not a family at all.
“I’m staying with B.A.P.”
“Who’s that?” they all asked with confused looks on their faces.
“They’re this new K-pop boy band. Their style’s pretty different from a lot of the other bands out there.” I explained.
“Boy band. As in boys,” Papa says, dubious about me sharing a roof with boys (men). “I’m not sure I like the idea of you living with men, especially ones none of us have met.”
“W-well, for the program, each of them would have had to of have been screened to make sure that it is safe for a girl to live with them.” I say, less certain about my family’s support of me travelling to Korea.
My mother and grandmother nod in agreement with me.
“Don’t worry,” Grandma croons to sooth Papa’s worries, “I’m sure she be fine. Woman’s intuition.”
