Convincing Me
Last Wish
1. Convincing Me
Yang Yoseob was the kind of person who always prioritize others before
himself. He was the type who was always bubbly, cheerful and downright
happy. He always smiled no matter how things have been dire and
severe. He was loved by all. So when he was diagnosed for cancer and
had only a few months to live, everyone became sad for the kid. It's
like their sunshine was taken away from them. But still Yoseob still
continued to smile, though it only pained a lot of people, because no
matter what they do, no matter what they think, they can't save Yoseob
from his cruel fate.
In the midway of September, our village started to decorate their
houses with Christmas decorations, hanging up assorted lights and
such. This was also the time when our local radio station started a néw
contest to which people would send wishes, and the best wish would be
selected and granted.
Yoon Doojoon, Yang Yoseob's cousin, sent Yoseob's wishlist in behalf
of him. He never knew that it would be selected, as I never
expected that my life would take a turn because of that wish.
Yoseob's wish list contained three wishes. The first wish that Yoseob
made was to help build a proper house for the orphanage. The orphanage
was run by two youngsters on their mid-twenties, two guys named Jang
Hyunseung and Lee Gikwang. They were adopted by the deceased former
head of the orphanage. They tried to fix and patch some rundown
structures of the house, but they couldn't because of the lack of
materials. The wish was itself was big, but the local government was
happy to help, including some construction company, and other
villagers that were willing to help them.
The second wish was for his cousin, Yoon Doojoon. Yoseob wished that
Doojoon would join our village's football team, where they would be
facing the other village's team for the championship on November. Also
to watch him play and win the championship. The football coach didn't
have any problem with Doojoon, since Doojoon was very athletic, all he
needed was several practices to make up for the requirement.
The third and last wish he made was to have someone accompany him for
those two wishes and a personal wish he made on his own. Now it's
obvious that this was the part where I would enter and stuff, but
that's not the point, yet. Now why out of all the hundreds of people
he could be with, I was selected to be the one fitted on that bill?
No, the local radio station didn't draw lots for the third wish. Why?
Turned out that Yoseob specifically asked for me, a person named Yong
Junhyung.
The wish was very difficult to grant, for its sensitive nature, not to
mention personal. The local radio station didn't know how to convince
me, or to approach me at all. I just moved to that village that year,
so everything was new. I didn't even know who this Yoseob kid was.
Relations, friends, not one of them mattered to me. I chose to not
socialize, for I preferred the city better.
Anyway, my little brother, though not so little anymore for he became
taller than me, Dongwoon, told me about Yoseob and his three wishes.
Dongwoon became Yoseob's friend right after we moved in because my
brother got lost on the way to school.
So when I first heard of the wishes, I was very unsure of that kid. I
mean, didn't he know the reputation I built in the school? I was
practically the most unsociable person there. I'm the school's
outcast, and I planned on continuing that. Who cares about new
relations, new friends, etc? I didn't want a change. I just wanted the
way things were before.
So while talking in my bedroom, I rejected Dongwoon's request for me
to grant the kid's wish.
He said to me, "C'mon hyung, it's Christmas soon! And you need to
prove yourself to Santa!"
I scowled, who believes in Santa anyway? Besides, I didn't even know
that Yoseob kid! Let alone, see him. Also, I find it really creepy
that he requested for me, out of all the hundreds of people out there.
Why can't it be just Dongwoon? Or his cousin? Anyone other than me;
besides, it's really troublesome to do those wishes.
"Look lil bro, I don't care about Santa. And you shouldn't believe in
Santa at all. Also, it's still September! Now I ask you this, do I
know this Yoseob kid?"
He shook his head. "No."
"And what do I say about people who I don't even know?"
"That you couldn't care less if they crawl in a rock and die. But
hyung! Yoseob-hyung is really nice! And he only got a few more months
to live! Please grant the third wish!" Dongwoon exclaimed, practically
begging and pleading for me.
"Aish! I already said no! I don’t have anything to gain from helping him!”
And this where my cunning little bro waited for me to say those words; his eyes had this glint on them.
“Big Bang tickets, VIP.”
My ears immediately perked upon hearing it. It was without saying, that I’m a Big Bang fan. I’m actually a music lover, I even rap and stuff. But that would be my biggest secret yet. Anyway, Big Bang would have a concert this December, and I was really dying to go.
“..Fine.”
And my brother cheered, jumping up and down. I sighed, what mess did I just agree upon?
