            Sweat was running down her face, but she hardly noticed that as she watched herself in the mirror. Her eyes were concentrated on her sneakers jumping everywhere. Step one, two and three, four, five and six, seven, eight! There! Finally, she’d perfected it. She was ready for the monthly testing in three days.

            “Bravo”, she heard someone say. Startled, Soo Ri jumped.

            It was the JYP President, leaning on the wall.

            “Oh, President, sorry… I would have greeted you if I’d know you were here…”, Soo Ri quickly said. She straightened out the skirt she was wearing and formally bowed. Soo Ri’s mind was racing at 100 miles per hour, filled with thoughts like, why is he here? Am I being dropped because I didn’t lose enough weight? Is it because I haven’t been improving? But he wouldn’t come here personally to tell me that… and he wouldn’t… , but she kept her thoughts and emotions under check as she faced him.

            “Can I help you, President?”, Soo Ri asked politely.

            “Soo Ri…”, he began. Uh oh, Soo Ri gulped. “You’ve always been talented… but you’ve also had to work very hard.”

            Soo Ri wanted more than anything to interject, but her mind told her to hear him out, to just listen, to wait. She kept her poker face on and waited silently, focusing on keeping her hands from balling into fists. It was not a good idea to make her President feel threatened. 

            “So, what do you thinking of becoming not only the Lead Dancer and Lead Choreographer, but also the Main Visual and a Lead Singer for the new girl group?”

             Soo Ri nearly dropped her jaw. What? “Wait. President, what makes you think I can handle all of that?”, she asked, slightly panicking despite her overwhelming ecstasy. 

            The President smiled. “Like I said, you work very hard. You aren’t one to take your talent or your position for granted. I know you feel like dance is your best, and it is, that’s why I made you choreographer, but I have also become very aware of your vocal talent, and I know you’ve expressed interest in becoming a model. Why not start now?”

            “When you say… new girl group… you aren’t referring to… to the already famous group Epik Love!?”

            “I am. So don’t disappoint me.” He patted her on the shoulder and turned to leave.

            Before he shut the door he said, “Don’t forget to call your mom. You haven’t been contacting her a lot lately. Practice is important, but you have to be a healthy human being in order to practice.”

            The door shut.

            Trembling, Soo Ri pulled out her phone. She felt a headache coming on just from all the anxiety and nervousness she had just experienced.

            Ring, ring- “Hello?”

            “Mom”, Soo Ri whispered into the phone, “Mom, I made it! Mom, I’m going to debut.”

            From the other end, Soo Ri heard her Mom burst into tears.

            “Don’t cry”, Soo Ri laughed, although she too felt so relieved that she could sob, “It’s a good thing.”

            “Congratulations, Soo Ri, my daughter. What I wouldn’t give to see you now… I miss you”, her mother said.

            “I know”, Soo Ri said, suddenly feeling a rush of sadness. “I want to see you too, but look, Mom, I’m succeeding! So just wait a little bit, okay?”

            “Okay, dear. Take care of yourself, always!”

            “Okay”, Soo Ri said, and shut off the phone.

            She felt mixed emotions. On the one hand, she was so incredibly happy that she was going to debut, that she was now safe from exemption. But on the other hand, she felt a little lonely. She’d never celebrated anything alone before.
