final.

once upon a december

the air was freezing as snow started to stick to the ground, carriages pulling up outside the grand palace where the infamous kim family resided. this was a gathering to say farewell to the king, as he left for paris for a few months to take care of important business.

within seconds the ballroom floor was full of crowds dancing, everyone seemed to be having the time of their lives. up at the front row, observing, were the royal family. the mother of the family stood proper, back straight and chin held high.

the king entered, wearing his military attire, making his way to stand next to his wife, kissing her cheek in a greeting, that was before the mother realised someone was missing.

“junmyeon, where is jongin? please tell me he isn’t getting into any mischief…” the mother sighed, her youngest child always too excitable for his own good.

“no mother, he’s getting ready.” junmyeon, the eldest child answered. the mother shook her head and sighed “he had all day for that…”

the king chuckled and rubbed his wife’s back assuringly, as if he knew he was being spoken about he came running in, the youngest child, jongin.

“mama! papa!” jongin excitedly shouted, almost tackling his mother as he gave her a hug. his father bent down for a hug himself which was greatly received, picking his youngest child up and swung him around in the air.

junmyeon smiled as he watched before pulling his brother to one side. “ni, you know i’m going with papa for a while and i’m gonna miss you so much but…” junmyeon smiles, taking the present he bought his brother out of his pocket before handing it to him. “i want you to wear this, so that when we meet again we’ll be connected.” jongin smiles widely at his older brother, looking at the necklace. “thank you so much myeon!” jongin smiles widely.

“wait ni, this is the best part.” junmyeon grins, moving closer to his brother and letting the charms on their necklaces connect, jongin reading the complete sentence. “together in paris…” jongin smiles and hugs his brother tightly.

near the kitchens, a boy watches, jealous that he didn’t have that kind of treatment. “sehun!! no more sneaking off.” a man growls, dragging the child back to finish his chores.

as the night continued on, jongin pulling his older brother to dance with him among the crowd, giggling when his brother tripped over his own feet. everything was going smoothly, that was until there was a scream that echoed across the ballroom.

the two brothers moved closer to their parents as the crowd parted to make way for a male walking closer to the family of four.

“chēn?!” the king roared as he looked at the male in disgust, moving closer to the man. the queen pulled her youngest child close as he shivered in fear, the older brother standing with his head held high.

“oh tsar kim! why was i not invited to this…delightful ball?” chēn snickers, glancing around at the crowd who looked at him in shock.

“you were banned from ever stepping foot inside my palace, no! the city! why are you here?” the king demanded an answer.

chēn snickered before smirking at the king. “it’s simple isn’t it tsar kim, i’m finally getting my ‘souls worth’” he grinned evilly as chaos erupted inside the palace, the crowd screaming.

tsar kim ran over to his children, grabbing his older child frantically. “take jongin and run, please.” the crowd getting louder. junmyeon bit his lip and took his little brothers hand nervously.

“now junmyeon!” his father commanded, junmyeon nodding and pulling his little brother along as the boy started to cry. jongin pulled his hand out of his brothers grip before bolting towards his room “my music box!!” he cries and continues to run, entering his room and grabbing the small trinket as his brother comes inside, gunshots blaring through the halls.

junmyeon slams the door behind him as jongin pockets the small music box inside his coat before a boy peeks out behind a compartment in the wall. “please hurry.” junmyeon tells his brother before the small boy pushes him towards the compartment “go out this way, through the servants quarters” the boy tells him.

jongin accidentally drops the music box out of his pocket, pushing his way out and crying “my music box!”

the boy pushes jongin back inside and closes the door shut as a crowd breaks through the door. “where are they boy?!” one of the guards demands, sehun throwing an ornament at him before another one knocks him out with the of a gun.

junmyeon pushed his young brother inside and followed close behind, after a short time, they exited outside the gates of the palace, junmyeon immediately grabbed his younger brother’s hand and pulled him in the direction of the train station. “junmyeon.” jongin fried, trying to keep up with his brother. “ni, keep up with me please.” junmyeon begs his brother, just as chēn jumps down behind jongin.

chēn knocks the younger brother to the floor, grabbing the boys ankle as jongin begs to be let go. “you’ll never escape me child.” he snickers, pulling the boys leg. the ice beneath chēn gives away, slowly pulling him inside the frozen water as jongin breaks free.

once the brothers arrive at the train station, the train is departing. “jongin, hurry!” junmyeon shouts, running as fast as he can to catch the moving train. junmyeon is safely pulled onto the train, jongin lagging behind with tears in his eyes as he calls out for his brother who tries to reach for him. their hands connect. “jongin hold on.” junmyeon tells him.

“don’t let go.” jongin cries as their hands start slipping, jongin falling backwards and hitting the floor as he loses consciousness. “jongin!” junmyeon cries out as he watches his brothers figure fade away.

-ten years later-

the town became gloomy after the news of the demise of the kim family spread. although the town stayed alive with gossip. newest rumour says that although his parents were killed, the youngest child was still alive and the older half brother, junmyeon was willing to pay a lot of money for anyone who can find jongin.

sehun smirked as he heard of this gossip, walking towards his usual spot to meet his friend. sehun whistled to alert chanyeol where he was, his friend making his way over. “what brings you here today sehun?” chanyeol asks.

“well, believe it or not, i have a plan that could make us rich.” sehun grins. “well what is it?” chanyeol asks the younger. “remember the kim family? well rumour has it the youngest son is still alive, the older brother is willing to pay anyone who finds him.”

“okay…and? we clearly don’t have what’s his name, jongin?” chanyeol tells the younger. “and this is where my brilliant mind comes into play,” sehun starts. “we find somebody who we can teach to be jongin, we teach him everything we know, hand him over to the brother and voilà the money is ours, greatest con in history.” sehun grins before chanyeol starts laughing, smacking the youngers arm before sehun swats his head.

“oh, you’re serious…uhm…well, what do we know about the royal family?” chanyeol asks with an eyebrow raised. “i’ve told you lots of times i used to work and live with them…i know a lot.” sehun tells him unamused.

“oh yeah…” chanyeol sighs. “are you in then?” sehun asks and chanyeol nods.

not far away a woman is shoving a boy out of the orphanage. “i got you a job in the fish factory,” she starts “go left-“ she sighs “are you even listening?”

the boy smiles widely as he waves goodbye to all the children watching him. “sorry, i’m listening comrade boa.” the boy sighs.

“you’ve been a thorn in my side since you were brought here,” the woman starts, pulling the boy by his scarf, the boy uninterested turns to wave goodbye again as he’s pulled along. “acting like some royalty,” she continues as the boy starts to pull on the scarf. “instead of the nameless no account you are.” she spits.

the scarf comes undone from the boy as the woman continues “for the last ten years, i’ve fed you, i’ve clothed you,” the boy starts mocking her, “i’ve kept a roof over-“ “over my head.” the boy finishes as the woman whips around to glare at him.

“how is it, you don’t have a clue as to who you were before you came to us, but you can remember all that.” boa asks him. “well i do have a clue to who-“ the boy starts. “agh! i know!” she grips the boys necklace. “together in paris,” she mocks “so you want to go to france to find your family, huh?” the boy nods as the woman laughs.

“little mr kai, it’s time to take your place in life, in life and in line, be grateful too!” she shouts as she pushes the boy outside the gate, throwing his scarf at him. “together in paris.” she laughs, closing the gate.

kai sighs as he walks towards the signs. “be grateful she says…go left.” he sighs and plays with his fingers. “if i go left, i’ll be kai the orphan forever…” he pouts. “but if i go right, maybe i could find…” he sighs and grabs his necklace. “whoever gave me this necklace must have loved me…” he rolls his eyes and drops the necklace, tucking it inside his shirt.

“this is crazy…me go to paris?” he wanders forward before throwing his arms in the air “send me a sign!” he shouts. “a hint,” he sits down on the rock below the signs. “anything…” he sighs. a dog peeks out from behind the rock, snatching kai’s scarf from next to him. “hey!” kai tries to grab the scarf from the little dog.

“hey, i don’t have time to play right now.” he sighs, trying once again to grab the scarf. “i’m waiting for a sign.” he says before lunging to grab his scarf. the dog runs towards the right before kai sighs. “great, a dog wants me to go to st petersburg…” he gasps “okay!” he tells the dog, walking towards it.

he grabs his scarf and follows the dog towards the town, making his way to the seemingly familiar train station. “one ticket to paris please!” he asks the man who holds his hand out “exit visa please!” the man asks and kai frowns. “exit visa?” kai asks.

“no exit visa, no ticket.” the man shouts, slamming the window shut. the woman standing behind kai grabs his attention as she pokes him. “see sehun, he can help.” she tells him. “where can i find him?” kai asks “at the old palace, but you didn’t hear it from me.” she whispers as kai nods. “go!” the woman tells him.

“nice nice, very nice.” sehun says as the boy says “and i look like a prince, i can dance like feather.” sehun nods, scribbling the name out. “thank you, thank you, next please!” he demands.

a boy walks onto the stage and throws his fur coat off, revealing a blue and white outfit. “junmyeon, it’s me, jongin!” the boy says in a sultry voice, popping his hips. chanyeol groans and rests his head in his arms. “oh brother…” sehun sighs before they finish up.

“that’s it sehun, game over.” chanyeol tells him. “our last chance and yet still no boy to play jongin.” chanyeol sighs as he throws paper everywhere. “we’ll find him yeol, he’s here, right under our noses.” sehun reassured the elder. “one look at this music box and we’ll know we have the real jongin.” he says as he bumps into a boy. “excuse me please,” kai says, looking back at the man who bumped into him.

—

kai eventually found the castle, the dog from earlier sticking close by him. the dog finds a gap in the door and goes inside and jongin shouts after him. “monggu!” he shouts before sighing, looking inside. he rips part of the boarding off the frame, hitting the ground with a oomf as his hat falls off.

kai climbs the stairwell, looking around as he takes his scarf off. “hello? anyone home?” he calls out. the dog follows kai close by as they enter a huge room. kai finds himself absentmindedly dancing across the room before his trance is broken by a male shouting at him. “hey, what are you doing here?!” sehun shouts at the unfamiliar male.

kai gasps and runs towards the stairs at the opposite side of the room as the male chases him. “wait, stop!” sehun shouts over, the boy halting infront of a portrait of the royal family. they both turned to look at each other as they panted.

“now, how did you get in here-“ sehun looks at the male in shock, his eyes darting from the portrait of the youngest kim to the male infront of him. kai sighs as monggu sniffs sehun, growling at the male softly. “wait a minute boy…” chanyeol says as sehun pulls him close. “do you see what i see?” sehun asks, pointing between the male and the portrait.

chanyeol nods as sehun picks up the dog and hands it to him. “are you sehun?” kai asks the male. “perhaps, depends who’s asking.” sehun says as he’s climbs the stairs closer to the male. “my name is kai…i need travel papers, they say you’re the man to see…even though i can’t tell who said that.” kai tells sehun.

“hmmm…” sehun says as he circled the male, kai following him around in a circle. “hey! why are you circling me? were you a vulture in another life?” kai asks with a frown. “i’m sorry kay.” sehun says “it’s kai.” kai replies.

“kaie” sehun starts, “KAI.” kai replies. “it’s just that you look an awful lot like…” he chuckles and points to the painting as kai frowns at him. “uhh, never mind, now…you said something about travel papers?” sehun asks. “uh yes…i’d like to go to paris.” kai says.

“you’d like to go to paris?” sehun smiles, turning to glance at chanyeol who is aweing over the dog. “now let me ask you something, kai was it? is there a last name that goes with that?” sehun asks. “well, actually, this is gonna sound crazy. i don’t know my last name.” kai sighs “i was found wondering around when i was eight years old.” kai tells him.

“and, before that? before you were eight?” sehun beckons him to continue. “look, i know it’s strange but i don’t remember.” kai tells him.

“hmm, that’s perfect.” sehun smiles and nods. “well, i do have one clue however, and that is paris.” kai says as he fiddles with his necklace. “paris?” sehun asks. kai ignores the question “right so, can you two help me or not?” kai asks.

“chanyeol, chanyeol, tickets?” sehun asks his friend quietly before turning back to kai. “uh sure would like too, in fact, we’re going to paris ourselves.” sehun smiles as kai gasps. “well uh, and i’ve got three tickets, unfortunately the third one is for him,” sehun points to the portrait of the family. “jongin.”

kai stares at the painting with his mouth open as the males pull him along. “we’re going to reunite the grand duke jongin with his older half brother junmyeon.” chanyeol informs kai.

“you do kind of resemble him,” sehun starts. “the same brown eyes.” chanyeol tells him, “the kim eyes!” sehun smiles at chanyeol. “jongdae’s smile.” chanyeol says “yeji’s chin,” sehun pushes jongin to look at him. “oh look,” chanyeol says as he grabs kai’s hands. “he even has junmyeon’s hands.”

“he’s the same age, the same physical type.” sehun continues before kai interrupts. “are you trying to tell me you think i’m jongin?” kai asks flabbergasted.

“all i’m trying to tell you is that i’ve seen thousands of boys all over the country, and not one of them looks as much as the grand duke as you.” sehun sighs “i mean look at the portrait,” kai’s eyes follow sehun’s hand to look at the portrait. “i knew you were crazy from the beginning, but now i think you’re both mad.” he chuckles, walking away.

sehun chases him and stops infront of him. “why? you don’t remember what happened to you.” sehun says. “no one knows what happened to her.” chanyeol nods. “you’re looking for family in paris,” sehun starts “and her family is in paris.” chanyeol finishes.

“you ever thought about the possibility?” sehun asks as he’s guides kai back towards the portrait. “that i could be royalty?” kai asks and the two men nod.

“well i don’t know,” he shakes his head “it’s kind of hard to think of yourself as a duke when you’re sleeping on a damp floor, but sure, i guess every lonely boy would hope he’s a prince…” kai says as he stares at the painting.

“and one little boy is, after all he will rise again.” chanyeol tells kai. “really wish we could help but the third ticket is for the grand duke jongin.” sehun says as he pulls chanyeol away. kai sighs “good luck.” sehun says.

kai stares at the portrait closely, frowning before running after the two males. “sehun!” kai calls out. “sehun, wait!” kai tries again as the male turns around. “d-did you call me?” sehun asks and turns around.

“if i don’t remember who i am, then who’s to say i’m not a prince or a duke, or whatever he is, right?” kai asks and sehun nods “mhm, going on?”

“yeah, and if i’m not jongin, the brother will certainly know right away and it’s all just an honest mistake.” kai finishes. “sounds plausible.” sehun says. “but if you are the prince then you’ll finally know who you are and have your family back.” chanyeol grins as he wraps an arm around kai’s shoulder.

“you know, he’s right. either way, it gets you to paris.” sehun smirks. “right!” kai says as he shakes sehun’s hand. “may i present his royal highness, the grand duke jongin!” sehun jokes. “monggu, we’re going to paris” kai tells the dog who barks in reply.

“the dog stays.” sehun says.

“jongin…alive.” chēn sneers “that kim brat, that’s why i’ve been stuck here in limbo, my curse is unfulfilled.” he groans in frustration. he snatches up his relic and chuckles. “now my dark purpose will be fulfilled and the last of the kims will die!” he laughs evilly.

sehun puts his luggage away before going to sit in the window seat that faces kai, not sitting down once he hears the dog on the seat growl. “oh the mutt gets the window seat…” he frowns and moves to take the seat next to kai instead. kai slouches in his seat and fiddles with his necklace.

“stop fiddling with that thing and sit up straight!” sehun tells him, kai huffing and slouching even more. “remember, you’re a grand duke.” he tells kai. “how is it that you know what grand dukes do or don’t do?” kai asks curiously. “i make it my business to know.” sehun smirks, leaning against kai.

kai continues fiddling with his necklace as he frowns. “look, kai, i’m just trying to help, alright?” sehun says. kai sits up “sehun?” he starts, “mmmh?” sehun turns to look at kai. “do you really think i’m royalty?” kai asks and sehun nods “you know i do.”

“then stop bossing me around!” kai smirks and sits back. “he certainly has a mind of his own.” chanyeol grins “yeah, i hate that man.” sehun huffs, kai sticking his tongue out at him.

a while later when chanyeol had gone to look out the train window with the dog, sehun sat down infront of kai and cleared his throat. “look, i think we got off on the wrong foot.” sehun starts. “well i think we did too, but i appreciate your apology” kai smiles. “apology? who said anything about an apology? i was just saying that we-“ “please don’t talk anymore, okay? it’s only gonna upset me.” kai frowns and closes his book.

“fine, fine, i’ll be quiet if you will.” sehun tells kai.

“you think you’re gonna miss it?” kai asks. “which? your talking?” sehun replies. “no! st petersburg.” kai asks. “nope.” sehun says as he fiddles with his hands. “why? it was your home.” kai frowns. “it was a place i once lived, end of.” sehun says nonchalantly. “well, you must plan on making paris your true home.” kai smiles.

“what is it with you and homes?” sehun asks, crossing his arms and kicking his legs on the seat. kai stands up “well for one thing, it’s something that every normal person wants. he tries to knock sehun’s legs down so he can get past, when the male doesn’t budge he climbs over the seats instead.

chanyeol renters the small train cabin with the dog. “oh thank goodness it’s you, just please remove him from my sight.” kai demands, pointing at sehun. “what have you done to him?” chanyeol asks. “me? it’s him!” sehun points at kai accusingly. “hah!” kai shouts and storms out the cab.

“oh no! an unspoken attraction.” chanyeol tells monggu. “attraction? for that skinny little brat? have you lost your mind?” sehun frowns. “i was only saying…” chanyeol says. sehun exits the cab, storming off in a different direction to kai.

outside the train, chēn’s attempt on kai’s life drove closer, getting inside the train. chanyeol wanders the hallway, looking down at his travelling papers as he overhears a male say “last month the papers were blue, this month they are red.” chanyeol looks down at his paper and gasps at the blue that comes into view.

he enters back inside their cab to find sehun reading a book. “this is what i hate about this government, everything is red.” he frowns as sehun stares at him. “red?” sehun asks as he stands up. “i propose we move to the baggage car.” chanyeol suggests.

sehun starts handing chanyeol some of their luggage. “i propose we get off this train.” sehun frowns. on the seat opposite kai slept soundly, monggu standing on the edge of the seat to look outside the window, barking when he notices chēn’s minions.

“hey!” sehun shakes kai away, groaning when kai’s fist makes contact with his nose as the male sits up. “oh sorry, i thought you were someone el- oh it’s you, well that’s okay then.” kai sighs. sehun grabs kai’s hand and pulls him up, pulling him along as he follows chanyeol.

“where are we going?” kai asks. “i think you broke my nose.” sehun frowns. “he’s such a baby…” kai complains to himself, following after the males.

“ah yes this will do nicely.” sehun says, setting down their luggage. “he’ll freeze in here.” chanyeol frowns. “he can thaw in paris.” sehun jokes. “the baggage car?” kai asks and the two men smile nervously. “there wouldn’t be anything wrong with our papers now, would there, maestro?” kai asks with a knowing smile.

“of course not your grace.” sehun mocks, taking his hat off. “it’s just that i hate to see you mingle with those commoners.” he smirks, taking kai’s luggage. monggu starts barking as a green light flashes underneath the door.

underneath the train, chēn’s minions started separating the baggage cart from the rest of the train. sehun topples and falls on top of kai. “what’s going on?” sehun asks. “i don’t know, but there goes the dining cart.” chanyeol frowns.

“get off me.” kai huffs. “i’m trying!” sehun says, trying to push the luggage off his chest. chanyeol looks through the window in the door. “uh sehun?” chanyeol says. “what?” sehun frowns. “i think someone has flambéed our engine.” chanyeol tells him.

sehun opens the door and shoves his coat off, handing it to kai as he climbs up the ladder, halfway up he turns to look at them. “wait here, i’ll check it out.” he says. he climbs on top, making his way inside the engine of the train. he groans when heat immediately hits him. “anybody here?” he calls, clearly nobody there as he glances closer at the engine. he makes his way back to the others as the engine gets too hot. “we’re gonna have to jump.” he tells them both, ripping open the door on the side of the train. “did you say jump?” kai gasps.

“after you.” kai says, turning to look at sehun. “fine, we’ll uncouple the car.” he says. chēn’s minions immediately fly to to make the car unbreakable. sehun jumps into the middle. “come on, i need a wrench, an axe…anything!” he frowns. “here!” chanyeol shouts, throwing a small hammer to sehun.

sehun immediately starts banging at the connector. monggu starts barking at kai to grab his attention, kai smirks when he realises what the box monggu is on says.

sehun groans when the hammer breaks, throwing it away. “there’s got to be something better than this!” he shouts to the men. “here!” kai says, handing sehun a stick of dynamite. “that’ll work.” sehun smiles, sticking it between the connector before hopping back onto the cart with kai and chanyeol. he immediately held kai close as chanyeol held them both close.

“what did they even teach you in those orphanages?” he asks kai who frowns at him. the dynamite successful disconnectors the two carts, sehun taking the fire out with his coat. “the brakes are broke!” chanyeol cries out.

“don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of track. we’ll just coast to a stop.” sehun tells them nonchalantly. they all fall over as the train shakes, chēn’s minions breaking the track. they all gasp when they look at the now broken track.

“you were saying?” kai mocks. sehun dives to the chain that is laying on the floor of the cart. “chanyeol, i’ve got an idea! give me a hand with this.” he asks, grabbing the chain and running with it. chanyeol falls backwards inside a box.

sehun climbs down, holding onto the cart. “hand me the chain.” sehun asks, frowning when he sees kai holding it. “not you!” he shouts at kai. “chanyeol’s busy at the moment.” kai smiles, sehun shakes his head and takes the chain from kai, hooking it underneath the cart, his hand slips but kai immediately grabs it, pulling him up. they stare into each other’s before they look in shock at the wreckage behind them.

“and to think that could’ve been you.” kai jokes, helping sehun back onto the cart. “if we live through this, remind me to thank you.” sehun tells kai. they both grab the chain, moving it to the back of the cart where the door is. “brace yourself.” sehun tells kai, both of them pushing the chain out the cart. the chain starts ripping the tracks up, causing all of them to fall backwards. the train turns side way, slowing down.

“well, this is our stop.” kai tells the other two males, they all link arms and jump off the train together, hitting the snow lightly. the train immediately falling through the broken bridge and erupting in a small explosion.

“so, are we gonna walk to paris?” kai asks. “no, we’ll take a boat in germany.” sehun sighs. “oh so we’re walking to germany?” kai asks

“no your grace, we are taking a bus.” sehun mocks and kai laughs softly “a bus?” he sighs dreamily.

“baekhyun my dear, yeollie’s on his way.” chanyeol calls out into the sky. “who is baekhyun?” kai asks chanyeol who turns to look at him. “who is baekhyun? he’s a tender little morsel—“ “chanyeol” sehun interrupts. “a cup of hot chocolate-“ “chanyeol!” sehun interrupts again. sehun rolls his eyes and grabs sehun’s arm. “chanyeol, ixnay on the hyun-say.” sehun tells the elder.

chanyeol grins and grabs sehun’s hand, mockingly ballroom dancing with him. “he’s a decadent pastry, filled with whip cream and laughter.” chanyeol continues, dipping sehun to the ground. “is this a person or a cream puff?” kai asks sehun as the male is dipped down. “he is the emperor’s ravishing first cousin.” chanyeol says as he pushes sehun away.

“but i thought…we were going to see the emperor himself?” kai asks chanyeol who continues dancing with himself. “why are we going to see her cousin?” kai turns to look at chanyeol. “sehun?” kai crosses his arms and turns to look at the male.

sehun smiles at kai nervously. “well…no one gets near junmyeon without convincing baekhyun first.” he tells kai. “oh no, not me, no no!” kai shakes his head, walking away. “nobody ever told me i had to prove i was the grand duke!” he complains to sehun. “look i—“ sehun starts before kai interrupts. “show up: yes, look nice? fine! but lie?” he asks sehun.

“you don’t know it’s a lie! what if it’s true?” sehun argues. “hmm…” kai turns away but sehun grabs his arm. “okay…so there’s one more step on the road to finding out who you are, i just thought this was something you had to see through to the end, no matter what!” sehun sighs.

“but look at me sehun! i’m not exactly grand duke material…” kai grips at the clothes he’s wearing, both males groaning. kai storms off to go stand by chanyeol who offers him a rose he had picked.

“tell me kai, what do you see?” chanyeol asks kai, kai stares down at his reflection in the water. “i see a skinny little nobody with no past and no future.” kai frowns, throwing the rose into the lake. “i see an engaging and fiery young man who, on an number of occasions has shown regal command, equal to any royal in the world.” chanyeol tells the younger who turns to look at him.

“and i have seen my fair share of royalty,” chanyeol tells kai to shush. “you see, i was a member of the imperial court.” chanyeol smiles. sehun walks over to join them. “so are you ready to become the grand duke jongin?” he asks kai. kai rolls his eyes and walks away, chanyeol frowning at sehun.

“what?” sehun asks chanyeol. “there is nothing left for you back there kai, everything is in paris.” kai lets the elders words sink in. “hmm…” kai smiles “gentlemen,” he turns to look at them. “start your teaching.” he grins.

“i remember it well.” chanyeol says, moving kai along, telling him everything he needed to know.

once they were on the boat, sehun decided to give kai something.

“here, i bought you a suit!” sehun smiles, kai laughing softly and taking ahold of it. “you bought me a…tent.” he sighs. “come on, just put it on.” sehun sighs, handing kai the complete set. kai takes everything and goes inside their room to change as sehun goes to meet chanyeol.

“checkmate.” chanyeol tells sehun. kai comes up the meet the men, dressed in the suit, clearing his throat to grab their attention. “wonderful!” chanyeol says, standing up from his seat when he sees kai. “marvellous,” chanyeol takes kai’s hand “and now you’re dressed for a ball, and you will learn to dance one as well.” he smiles.

he walks towards sehun. “sehun!” he says, pulling the male over to kai. “oh no, i’m not very good at it.” sehun complains. kai hesitantly places one hand on sehun’s shoulder and holds his other hand, as sehun’s free hand settles on his waist. chanyeol calls the numbers as they practice. “no, no!” chanyeol shakes his head. “kai you don’t lead, let sehun lead.” he tells him.

kai and sehun resume their positions again, practicing their dance. “the suit…it’s very beautiful.” sehun tells kai as they dance. “do you think so?” kai smiles and sehun nods. “i do.” he says. “i mean, it was nice on the hangar but it looks even better on you, you should wear it.”sehun compliments.

kai laughs as sehun spins him around. “i am wearing it.” he tells sehun. “oh right…of course you are.” sehun chuckles nervously. “i-i’m just trying to give you a…uh…” he sighs. “compliment?” kai finishes. “of course…yes.” sehun says as he continues to lead kai in the dance.

after a while they slow down. “i’m starting to feel a little lightheaded…” sehun says to kai. “yeah,” kai nods “me too.” he smiles. “probably from spinning,” sehun says as they stop, smiling at kai. “maybe we should stop?” he suggests. “we have stopped.” kai tells him.

“kai i…” sehun starts and looks at kai. “yes?” kai says softly. they stare at each other before sehun leans in for a kiss, kai closing his eyes, the moment ruined by monggu growling at sehun. “you’re doing fine.” sehun tells kai, moving away from him.

—

kai sits on the floor, his back leaning against the bed frame as he brushes his hair softly. chanyeol groans softly. “are you okay? kai asks the elder worryingly. “fine…fine.” chanyeol reassures him. “just riddled with envy,” chanyeol frowns and points at sehun “just look at him, he can sleep through anything.”

monggu knocks over sehun’s bag, a small music box falling out. kai picks it up curiously, looking at it. “pretty jewellery box isn’t it?” chanyeol asks kai who continues to observe the trinket. “jewellery box? are you sure that’s what it is?” kai asks. “what else could it be?” chanyeol asks curiously.

“well…something else, something…special.” kai says “something to do with a secret…” he laughs when he feels monggu his foot and looks down at the dog. “is that possible?” kai asks, putting the trinket down as chanyeol climbs into bed. “anything’s possible, you taught sehun to waltz didn’t you?” chanyeol smiles.

kai laughs softly, picking monggu up and climbing into the bottom bunk with him. “sleep well your majesty.” chanyeol smiles as kai tucks himself in. “sweet dreams monggu.” kai says softly, cuddling the dog close as he fell asleep.

this is where chēn’s second attempt came into play, planning to kill jongin by using his dreams. green clouds made their way into the small room they stayed in, floating towards jongin immediately and flooding his mind.

jongin smiled as he dreamt of being inside this huge forest, he sat up on the grass and turned to see a boy beckoning him to follow, which he did. jongin sat up in his bed and in a trance like state, made his way out of their room, alerting monggu who woke up immediately with a whine.

monggu tried to follow after the boy but the door was closed so he ran over to sehun who was asleep, jumping on the man and barking at him to wake him up.

outside, jongin made his way to the top deck, the storm outside causing the ship to jerk shakily. jongin climbed the small mountain that the boy was atop carefully, continuing to follow the boy happily. he saw three girls waving at him happily, jumping into the water below them.

sehun frowns as monggu continues to bark at him. “what? what? what?” he asks, sitting up from his makeshift bed on the ground slowly, he picked the dog up. “monggu, what?” he asks as the dog barks once again, sehun’s attention turns to kai’s bed, seeing the boy missing. “kai!” he shouts, standing up and chasing after the boy while calling his name.

jongin, still in his trance like state started to climb onto the railings of the boat, holding onto the wiring of the boat as he dangles dangerously over the edge.

in his dream although, he saw his family in the lake below. “hello bear.” his dad smiles at him as he looks down at the man. “hello.” jongin waves. “jump in,” the man tells him. “jump in jongin.” the man smiles. the boy that jongin had followed jumped into the lake with an excited squeal which caused jongin to laugh.

sehun continued to chase away kai, slipping on the wet floor slightly but his determination to save kai letting him run. “kai!” he shouted just as a wave of water hit him, he climbed up to a place where he could see everything clearly, seeing kai who was about to jump. “kai no!” he shouted, climbing down and running towards the male.

“yes! jump!” the man says as he shifts into chēn. “the kim curse.” the evil male says to jongin. “jump!” the voice deepens, jongin crying out in shock, screaming as chēn’s minions attempted to pull him into the water.

sehun grabs kai from the railing, the boy flailing in his arms as he puts him down safely. “kai! wake up!” he says softly to the boy who is fighting him. “wake up!” sehun shouts, kai’s eyes snapping open with a gasp. kai pants softly as he looks around to take in his surroundings before breaking down sobbing in sehun’s arms.

“the kim curse…” he cries softly, gripping sehun’s shirt tightly. “the kim what?” sehun asks “what are you talking about?” he asks kai who continues to cry. “i keep seeing faces…so many faces…” kai cries. sehun wraps his arms around the male gently. “it was a nightmare.” he tells him as kai whimpers. “it’s alright, you’re safe now.” he tells him, holding him close.

“mmm, ah yes i remember it well, uncle yashin was from moscow, uncle boris was from odessa and every spring we would take-“ a boy starts. “we would take picnics by the shore on sunday,” junmyeon interrupts, standing up from his chair.

“haven’t you got anything better to do?” he asks the male, shooing him away. baekhyun pulls the male towards the door. “oh dear, now you have to leave immediately.” baekhyun says.

“no more…” junmyeon sighs and shakes his head as baekhyun enters the room. “i’m sorry junmyeon…i thought he surely was jongin.” he tells him. “but we won’t be fooled next time,” he starts “no! i’m going to think of really hard questions.” baekhyun grins. “no! my heart can’t take no more,” junmyeon tells baekhyun “i will see no more boys claiming to be jongin.”

he frowns at the picture of his little brother, turning it so that he couldn’t see it.

“where is uncle boris from?” sehun asks. “what if baekhyun doesn’t recognise me?” kai asks. “he will, you’re jongin.” sehun says softly. “it’s just that…” kai sighs, “what?” sehun asks. “well…three days ago i didn’t have any past at all and now i’m trying to remember an entire lifetime.” he sighs. “that’s why you got me.” sehun grins. “now, where is uncle boris from?” he asks again. “moscow?” kai answers.

chanyeol knocks on the door, baekhyun immediately opening as if he was waiting nearby. baekhyun gasps softly, leaning against the door frame as he stares at chanyeol. “baekhyun byun!” chanyeol grins, grabbing baekhyun’s hand. “chanyeol park.” baekhyun says excitedly. “well this is unexpected.” baekhyun grins. “come in everyone.”

“may i present his royal highness, the grand duke, kim jongin.” chanyeol grins. kai walks towards the smaller male who gasps when he sees him. “oh my heavens, he certainly does look like jongin,” baekhyun says as he circles kai. “but so did many of the others…”

“where were you born?” baekhyun asks.

“at the peterhoff palace.” kai replies and baekhyun nods.

“how does jongin like his coffee?” baekhyun asks.

“i don’t like coffee, just hot water and lemons.” kai replies, baekhyun nodding again.

after a short while they got to the final question.

“finally, you’ll most likely find this…an impertinent question, but indulge me. how did you escape during the siege of the palace?” baekhyun asks kai. sehun groans to himself, knowing their cover had been blown.

kai fiddled with his necklace as he thought for a moment. “there was a boy…a boy who worked in the palace, he opened a wall…” kai says softly, sehun looks over at the male in shock. “i’m sorry, that’s crazy…walls opening.” kai laughs softly.

“so…is he a kim?” chanyeol asks. “well, he answered every question.” baekhyun smiles. “you hear that kid! you did it.” chanyeol grins at kai, picking him up in a hug. sehun slowly removes himself from the situation, going outside.

“so, when do we see the emperor?” chanyeol asks. “i’m afraid you don’t.” baekhyun sighs. “come again?” chanyeol turns to look at baekhyun. “junmyeon won’t allow it.” baekhyun shakes his head.

“now baekhyun…surely you can think of some way to arrange a brief interview with him.” chanyeol frowns. “do you like the russian ballet?” baekhyun asks kai who nods. “i believe they’re performing tonight, me and junmyeon love the russian ballet, we never miss it.” baekhyun reveals.

“we did it!” chanyeol grins as he goes to sehun outside. “we’re going to see the emperor tonight, we’re gonna get 10 million rubles.” he grins. “but chanyeol…he is the prince.” sehun says softly.

“kai was extraordinary! i almost believed him and baekhyun—“ chanyeol grins. kai comes running outside. “baekhyun wants to take us shopping for the ballet.” kai tells them. “shopping in paris,” he smiles “can you believe it?!” he says excitedly.

chanyeol paces back and forth outside the theatre as sehun relaxes on the steps. “we don’t have anything to be nervous about, he’s the prince.” sehun sighs. “i know, i know.” chanyeol replies, sitting next to sehun. “no…you don’t,” sehun stands up “i was the boy in the palace, the one who opened the wall.” he says. “he’s the real thing yeol…” he whispers to his friend. chanyeol’s mouth drops in shock. “that means our kai…his found his family.” chanyeol smiles.

“we have found the heir to the korean throne…and you?” chanyeol asks sehun who looks dejected. “will walk out of his life forever…” he sighs and walks down the steps. “but…” chanyeol starts and sehun shakes his head. “princes don’t marry kitchen boys.” he tells the elder. “i know but—“

“we’re going to go through with this as if nothing has changed.” sehun tells chanyeol. “you’ve got to tell him…” chanyeol frowns.

“tell me what?” kai asks, the men turning to look at him. sehun looks at him in awe before taking the hat off his head. “uh…how beautiful you look.” sehun smiles. “well thank you…” kai smiles as he links arms with sehun, who leads him inside.

kai climbs the stairs as sehun hands their coats and hats over, stopping as he waited for the male. sehun turned to look up at kai, taking in the males raw beauty as he stood there, before quickly joining him at the top of the stairs and leading him inside.

once inside they took their seats, watching for the ballet to start.

“look…” sehun points over to the booth near the stage. “there he is, that’s junmyeon.” sehun tells kai who looks over at junmyeon.

“oh…please let him remember me.” kai sighs softly just as the show begins.

“relax, you’re gonna be great.” sehun tells him as they walk over to where junmyeon sits. kai frowns nervously and sehun pulls him along. “just take a deep breath, everything’s gonna be fine.” he assured him. once reaching where they needed to be, sehun stopped kai.

“just wait here, i’ll go in and announce you properly.” sehun turns away. “sehun,” kai says softly, sehun turns to look back at him. “yes?” sehun asks.

“look…we’ve been through a lot together,” kai says softly and sehun nods, moving closer. “and i just wanted to…” “yes?”

“well…thank you, i guess.” kai says softly. “yes, thank you for everything.” he smiles.

“kai…i” sehun says softly “yes?” kai asks. “i…uhm, i,” sehun sighs, kai moves closer and nods. “i wanted to wish you good luck i guess.” he smiles.

kai sighs dejectedly. “good luck.” sehun smiles and shakes kai’s hand.

sehun enters the booth in which junmyeon is sitting inside. “please inform his majesty, the emperor, that i have found his brother, the grand duke jongin.” sehun takes a deep breath in. “he’s waiting to see him, just outside the door.” sehun smiles.

“i’m very sorry young man, but the emperor, he will see no one.” baekhyun acts.

“you may tell that impertinent young man that i have seen enough grand duke jongin’s to last me a lifetime.” junmyeon says. “you’d better go.” baekhyun gently shoved sehun back towards the door. “please, let me just—“

“now, if you’ll excuse me, i wish to live out the remainder of my lonely life in peace.” junmyeon frowns.

“oh…i’ll see you to the door.” baekhyun says. sehun pretends to follow before walking over to junmyeon. “your majesty, i intend you no harm,” sehun starts, taking a seat next to the emperor.

“my name is oh sehun, i used to work at the palace.” he says softly. “well, that’s one i haven’t heard.” junmyeon says, standing up from his seat to walk out. “wait! don’t go please. if you’ll just hear me out,” sehun says, stopping junmyeon from leaving.

“i know what you’re after,” junmyeon frowns “i’ve seen it before, men who train young men in the royal ways.” junmyeon stares at sehun who continues to follow him. “but if your highness will just listen—“ “havent you been listening? i’ve had enough! i don’t care how much you have fashioned this boy to look like him, sound like him or act like him.” junmyeon frowns. “in the end, it is never him.” he finishes.

“this time it’s really him,” sehun tries to convince the male. “sehun— i’ve heard of you, you’re that conman from st petersburg who was holding auditions to find a jongin lookalike.” junmyeon reveals.

kai gasps as he hears this from the crack in the half opened door.

“but your majesty…we’ve come all this way from korea to see you,” sehun kneels infron of the male.

“and others have come from timbuktu.” junmyeon says. “it’s not that! it’s not what you think.” sehun frowns as junmyeon stands. “how much pain will you inflict on me for money?” he asks.

kai gasps once again as he hears this.

“remove him at once!” junmyeon demands. “but this is jongin i’m telling you!” sehun says as the guards pull him out. “he’s the grand duke, if only you’ll speak to him, you’ll see!” he shouts before he’s thrown out the room, landing before kai’s feet.

“it was all a lie wasn’t it?” kai asks, staring down at sehun. “you used me?” he asks as sehun stands up. “i was just part of your con to get his money?” kai frowns. “no! look, it may have started out that way,” he tells kai as the male walks away. “but everything’s different now because you really are jongin!” he continues following the boy.

“stop it! from the very beginning,” kai shoves sehun away. “you lied! and i not only believed you, i actually…ugh!” kai frowns and turns away. “kai, please!” sehun begs. “when you spoke of the hidden door of the wall opening, and the little boy, listen to me!” he says. “no! i don’t want to hear about anything that i said or remembered, you just leave me alone!” he turns around and slaps sehun as the male grabs him once again, storming off.

“kai please! you have to know the truth!” he tries to chase him, but he’s stopped by a male in the crowd that watched.

sehun frowns as he leans against a post outside the theatre, turning to see junmyeon exiting. he follows close by, watching the male enter in the car before sneaking into the drivers seat and starting the car.

“kyungsoo, slow down.” junmyeon shouts. “i’m not kyungsoo and i won’t slow down, not until you listen!” sehun tells him. “how dare you! stop this car immediately!” junmyeon demands. sehun smirks and starts driving faster.

he parks infront of the place they are staying and walks around the junmyeon’s side of the car, throwing the door open. “you have to talk to him, just look at him! please!” he demands. “i won’t be badgered by you a moment longer.” junmyeon says.

“do you recognise this?” sehun asks, pulling the small music box from his suit pocket. junmyeon gasps softly and takes it. “where did you get this?” junmyeon asks. “i know you’ve been hurt but it’s just possible that he’s been as lost and alone as you.” sehun tells him.

“you’ll stop at nothing, will you?” junmyeon asks. “i’m probably about as stubborn as you are.” he smirks as he stands up.

inside the room he stayed in, kai was packing his belongings into his small luggage, frowning when he heard a knock. “go away sehun.” he says, continuing to pack. he turns when he hears the door opening and gasping when he realises who it is.

“i’m sorry…i thought you were…” he sighs. “i know very well who you thought i was.” junmyeon says as he enters the room fully. “who exactly are you?” he asks kai. “i was hoping you could tell…” kai sighs.

“listen, i’m tired of being conned and tricked…” junmyeon tells him. “i don’t want to trick you.” kai says sincerely. “and i suppose the money doesn’t interest you either?” junmyeon asks. “i just wanna know who i am, wether or not i belong to a family…your family.” kai says.

“you’re a very good actor, best yet in fact.” junmyeon tells him. “but, i’ve had enough…” junmyeon walks towards the door.

“peppermint?” kai says suddenly. “my favourite kind of candy.” junmyeon smiles. “yes! yeah! i crushed one on the carpet once time and there was this one piece that always stuck that we could never move, and it always reminded me of you.” kai smiled as he played with his necklace.

“i used to lie there on that rug, and oh how i missed you and papa when you went away,” kai sighs “when you came here, to paris.” junmyeon gestures for kai to sit next to him. “what is that?” junmyeon asks, pointing to kai’s necklace.

“this?” kai asks, holding his necklace up. “i’ve always had it, ever since before i can remember…” he smiles. “may i?” junmyeon asks, kai handing him the necklace.

“it was our secret,” junmyeon smiles, pulling his matching necklace out and watching as they both connect. “my ni’s and mine.” he smiles.

junmyeon grabs the music box that sehun had given him and shows it to kai. “the music box…” kai smiles. “to sing me to sleep, whenever you were away so i wouldn’t suffer night terrors.” he smiles as he holds it. he takes his necklace back from junmyeon, using the small key to unlock it as he hummed the tune to the music box.

“oh my ni.” junmyeon says softly, pulling his brother in for a hug.

sehun watched from outside the window, blowing a kiss to jongin before walking away.

jongin smiles softly as he held a picture of his family. “i remember now…how much i loved them.” he smiles sadly. “they would not want us to live in the past,” junmyeon tells his brother. “especially now that we found each other.” jongin nods in agreement.

“oh look here,” junmyeon smiles. “the drawing you gave me for my birthday, of us both together.” jongin giggles softly as he takes a look upon his drawing. “seulgi made me so mad, she said we both looked like donkeys.” jongin frowns as he looks at it properly. “and she was right.” he laughs.

—

“you sent for me your highness?” sehun asks, bowing to junmyeon. “ten million rubles as promised, with my gratitude.” junmyeon smiles. “i accept your gratitude your highness but…i don’t want the money.” sehun admits. “what do you want then?” junmyeon asks.

“unfortunately…nothing you can give.” sehun frowns, bowing to junmyeon and moving to exit the room. “sehun, where did you get that music box? you were the boy weren’t you?” junmyeon asks. “you saved his life and mine, then you restored him to me, yet, you want no reward?” he asks.

“not anymore.” sehun admits. “why the change of mind?” junmyeon asks. “it was more a change of heart.” he says softly. “i must go.” he says, bowing to junmyeon and exiting the room. as sehun climbs down the stairs, jongin sees him.

“hello sehun.” jongin says, sehun looking at him “hello.” the male replies. “did you collect your reward?” jongin asks.

“my business is complete.” sehun says and makes his way down the stairs. “young man, you will bow and address the prince as your highness.” jongin frowns and shakes his head. “that’s not necessary-“ “please,” sehun says before bowing. “your highness, i’m glad you found what you were looking for.” he says, walking away.

jongin frowns sadly as he watches the male leave. “goodbye.” he says softly.

“jongin, your imperial highness.” chēn smirks, bowing to jongin. “look what 10 years has done to us, you are a beautiful young flower and me,” he moves closer to jongin “a rotting clone of your father.”

“that face…” jongin gasps. “last seen at a party like this one.” chēn grins. “a curse.” jongin says. “followed by a tragic night on the ice, remember?” chēn roars as he freezes the area around them.

“chēn” jongin says with a frown. “chēn~” chēn mocks jongin. “destroyed by your despicable family! but, what goes around? comes around, he smirks as his minions start ripping jongin’s suit.

“get away!” jongin cries out, back against the railings of the bridge. “i’m not afraid of you.” jongin says determinedly. “i can fix that!” chēn grins. “care for a little swim under the ice?” he shouts before using his powers to destroy the bridge underneath jongin.

“say your prayers jongin!” chēn grins, jongin screaming as he holds on to whatever he can grab. “no one can save you!” chēn roars. “wanna bet?” sehun says as he runs up behind chēn, punching him in the face as the clone falls to the ground.

sehun immediately slides to where jongin is, gripping both of the males hands and pulling him up. “sehun.” jongin says “if we live through this, remind me to thank you.” he says. “you can thank me later.” sehun tells jongin. “how enchanting, together again for the last time.” chēn grins as he uses his powers to move sehun away from jongin.

he places sehun on top of a flying horse statue, using his powers to make it come to life. jongin looks up to see what’s happening. “no!” jongin shouts. sehun grunts as he’s thrown off the horse once it lands, rolling away as it spits green flames at him. jongin grips onto the edge of the bridge. “sehun!” he calls out as the male grabs a pipe to swing at the horse.

“watch out!” sehun says just as chēn grips jongin by his hair and pulls him up. “do sviadaniya, your highness, yeah!” he shouts, attempting to throw jongin. “hold on!” sehun shouts over.

“finally, the last kim death.” chēn chuckles evilly, shouting in shock when monggu starts biting his legs. he flings the dog away just as a loud splash is heard, causing chēn to laugh. “noooo, jongin!” sehun cries as he runs to the edge, the horse appearing and pushing him away. “long live the kims.” chēn laughs.

“right!” jongin says and darts towards chēn, knocking him to the ground. “i couldn’t have said it better myself.” he grins, attempting to grab the relic that controls chēn’s power before chēn kicks him off.

chēn groans, getting his power ready again just as monggu leaps and takes the relic from him. “no!” he shouts as it lands underneath jongin’s foot who steps on top of it, causing the horse statue to break, part of it hitting sehun and knocking him out.

“this is for sehun!” jongin says, stomping on the relic. “this is for my family.” he says and stomps on it again. “and this! this is for you! dos svindaniya!” jongin says, stomping on it one last time which causes it to smash. jongin immediately dives towards sehun, protecting him from any danger as he watches chēn’s demise.

“oh no…” jongin says, turning sehun to lay on his back. “sehun,” he says softly, frowning when the male didn’t respond, monggu howling sadly. sehun groans at that, sitting up as jongin gasps. jongin whipped around, accidentally smacking sehun in the face. “sehun!”he shouts, hugging the male.

“ow ow, let go.” sehun groans, sitting up properly. “i thought you were going to st. peter-“

“i was-“ sehun says

“you didn’t take the—“

“i couldn’t.” he tells jongin sincerely. “why?” jongin asks him. “because i-“ jongin shushes him, leaning in close to kiss him before monggu barks, holding jongin’s crown in his mouth.

sehun takes the crown gently and holds it out to jongin. “they’re waiting for you.” he tells him, jongin taking the crown from him and looking at him.

dear junmyeon,

wish me luck. we’ll be together in paris again soon.

                       à bientôt,

                             nini.

junmyeon smiles as he hands the letter to baekhyun who coos. “oh they’ve eloped, isn’t it romantic?” baekhyun asks. “it’s a perfect ending.” baekhyun says. “no, it’s a perfect beginning.” junmyeon smiles.
