The Purpose of a Rubber Ducky

A/N: Hello! This is the first time I've written anything Yenkkura (???) related so please bare with me! Standing in the middle of the bathroom essentials aisle, just in front of the body wash section stood four girls. Two of them were in a glaring match while the other two were awkwardly standing on the side, not very sure what was happening. Honestly speaking, if glares could kill, the two of them would probably be on the floor by now.

‘Hands off, Choi. I saw it first.’ you said lowly as you glared at the blonde girl in front of you.

‘And which one of your big eyes missed the fact that I was here first?!’ said the girl standing opposite you, both hands on her waist.

May god please. PLEASE. Give you patience to deal with her.

You watched as the tall brown haired girl that resembled a puppy awkwardly tapped her shoulder before speaking. ‘I mean, you guys could just share-’

‘No. Yujin, you don’t understand how important this is to me!’

Oh god, you had enough of her so-called ‘important’ reasoning. Afterall, no reason can be as important as yours. You couldn’t help but snap at her.

‘You’re a duck yourself, you don’t need it!’

‘Well this is a mini-me, so of course it’s mine!’

‘Are you stupid?! If I said you looked like dog poo, would you really go up to a dog’s poo and try to pick it up and go home with it?! No! SO BACK THE HECK OFF BEFORE I THROW HANDS.’

‘OH YEAH?! YOU-’

‘DON’T MAKE ME WHIP OUT THAT BLACK BELT!’ you seethed. You were ready alright. You had even begun rolling up your sleeves when you felt Chaeyeon’s hand on your arm, tugging you back. Did you mention that you were stubborn as heck? Because you were definitely not backing down from any fights. Except Chaeyeon seemed to use her full strength and managed to pull you back. She wrapped her arms around your waist and whispered comforting words into your ears. Things like ‘it’s okay’ and ‘we can always try other stores that aren’t in this area too!’ managed to calm you down and reassured you, as you hopelessly watched a very smug Choi Yena picking up the last remaining rubber duck and made her way towards the check out.

And just like that, you watched as the last rubber duck in the supermarket made its way home with a new owner, who wasn’t you.

God damn it. You were annoyed because after countless (and fruitless) searches here and there, you finally found one place that sold a rubber duck. You felt terrible for dragging your ever-so-positive best friend along with you.

‘I’m sorry Jjaeyeon…’

‘Hey, it’s okay! It’s not your fault that rubber ducks seem to be in a shortage when we need them. We can always try to look elsewhere for them, yeah?’

‘But it’s already the seventh store that we’ve been to and the last one in this area,’ you protested, still thinking about the rubber duck.

Chaeyeon, being the sweetest best friend anyone could ask for, had only smiled and put her hand around your shoulder, telling you that it was okay. ‘We should rest and try again tomorrow. We still have a week left and I’m sure Eunbi won’t mind.’

Sighing, you bid your best friend goodbye and made your way back to your dorms. You were distracted and kicked the little pebbles that were on the pavement. You just wanted to help out as best as you could. Being the vice president of the club that you are associated with, you felt the need to pull through and make the event successful. But how the heck would it be successful if you’re missing four rubber ducks still? It’s all stupid Choi Yena’s fault. If it wasn’t for her, you would’ve been one duck closer to making the 1000 ducks you needed.

As you reached the dorms, you realized your roommate was just about to close the door. It didn’t help that your said roommate was also the root of your problems. You quickly ran and pushed the door to keep it open.

‘Why are you trying to close the door!?’

‘It’s you!? Open your own door!’

‘But I’m LITERALLY just here!?!?’

‘Not my fault you were going to buy Mr Ducky the Second!!!!!’

And that got your blood boiling. Choi Yena is impossible to deal with and god, if it wasn’t because the dorms were full and you couldn’t afford any accommodation outside of the school dorms, you would’ve moved the heck out of here already. You wouldn't have to deal with such a difficult person ever again.

‘CHOI YENA ARE YOU A CHILD!?!’

‘AND IF I AM!?!?!’

‘YOU’RE 21 FOR GOD’S SAKE’

‘AGE IS JUST A NUMBER YOU HAG!’ With that, Yena slammed the door shut, leaving you stuck standing outside the door.

You awkwardly stood there for a second, trying to hold your anger in before you broke something or pulled out all of your hair.

Calm down Sakura, breathe. In. And out. Feeling yourself calm down a little, you reached into your pockets to pull out your keys. Only to widen your eyes in panic. Where did your keys go?! It should’ve been inside your little key pouch but wait- Your key pouch wasn’t even in your pocket. It dawned on you that you must’ve left it inside your room when you rushed out in an attempt to purchase the rubber duck.

‘HEY I DON’T HAVE MY KEYS ON ME!!!!’ you screamed while banging against the door of your dorm.

You angrily slammed your lunch tray onto the table when you had arrived. You managed to get out of your business management classes on time for once and went to see Eunbi to talk about the fundraiser. Eunbi had been so kind about it - telling you that it was okay and that because you still had time. She reassured you that she’ll handle it if we couldn’t reach the amount of rubber ducks needed. But when you walked out, you noticed your shoelaces were untied so you bent down to tie them only to hear Eunbi being scolded and pressured into perfectly pulling this fundraiser off.

You have never felt so disappointed in yourself. Eunbi had voluntarily helped you and was someone you really treasured. She was so kind to you and you wanted to repay her by doing your job well. Except now you can’t even do that because your stupid roommate bought the rubber duck.

You ended up gathering all your determination and quickly finished lunch. Chaeyeon had looked at you weirdly because you were practically scarfing down all your food.

‘...Saku-chan? Are you...uh...okay?’

‘I’m busy, I gotta make calls to get those ducks.’

‘Slow down, you might choke,’ warned Chaeyeon as she paused and watched you with concern clouding her eyes.

‘Chae, I’m-’ you couldn’t even finish talking before you started choking. Why? Because the devil just walked into the cafeteria, laughing loudly and wildly gesturing while she spoke with her friends.

‘I can see you glaring at the poor girl, Kkura’

Seeing her really made your blood boil. If it wasn’t because of her, the whole dilemma would’ve been close to being resolved. Now, you wouldn’t say you are a vengeful person. Nor would you hold grudges. This was...definitely a special case though. ‘I’m gonna play a game with her.’

‘Huh?’ asked a confused Chaeyeon as she heard what you had muttered under your breath. It’s already out in the open so you might as well tell Chaeyeon what you had in mind.

‘I’m gonna head-shot her. One hit, one kill. EVERY. SINGLE. PUBG. GAME. SHE. PLAYS.’

‘I-’

And it’s safe to say that day, you happily took revenge in your room as you heard frustrated groans and shouts coming from the room opposite yours.

By all means, you are not someone who is petty. But that frustration you felt from the whole supermarket incident just wouldn’t leave your mind especially with the meetings becoming more frequent. If you were not in class or at the dorms, you would probably be found in the classroom that was used as the fundraiser’s headquarters anyway. It wasn’t until Chaeyeon pointed it out. But you didn’t realize that you had unknowingly gained up on Yena and did little things to her. Things like you’d purposely only wash your own clothes despite prior to the duck incident, whoever did the laundry would do both peoples. Other little things include not making the poor girl her portion of breakfast and not waking her up before she left for classes. This has caused Yena to be late the past week.

You only had one day left and you don’t know what you could do anymore. You’ve tried to call all the stores that may sell rubber ducks, only to receive a negative reply every single time. Why the heck is Korea suddenly having a shortage of rubber ducks?! There was only one more number left to call before you finished calling all the possible stores that could have the duck. At this point, you were desperate. You needed that duck seeing as it’s the final one and you don’t want Eunbi to get into trouble because of you. You dialled the number and spoke to the person who picked up calmly. But the conversation did not head in the direction that you were hoping it would.

‘Sorry. Good luck though!’ came the clerk’s reply as you proceeded to hang up.

Damn it. Why is this always happening? Why does it feel like everytime you put in 110 percent of your effort, only to be rewarded with not even 10 percent of the fruits of your labour?

You were so angry...and upset. Perhaps frustration should be a better way to describe what you are feeling. You hated it. You don’t like feeling useless and not being able to help Eunbi in any way. You were supposed to be helpful as vice president! You not only did not contribute much to the ideas of the fundraiser, but now you can’t even lend a helping hand. You were so tired and feeling your legs give out gave you more of a reason to just sit on the floor stare out into space while trying to come up with ways to purchase another duck to help out. You needed it since the fundraiser was going to happen in a day’s time.

The loud slam of your door broke you out of your thoughts. And lo and behold, the reason for your dilemma, the person who you wanted to rip their hair out was standing there. Her hair was still damp enough for little droplets to drip onto the floor and her shirt had wet patches near the shoulder areas. Yena’s face was scrunched up in an annoyed growl as she marched her way towards you.

‘MIYAWAKI SAKURA, WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM!?’

‘YOU’RE THE PROBLEM!!!’ you couldn’t help but scream. Your anger was boiling and you couldn’t hold yourself back.

‘WHY!? IS IT OVER THE STUPID DUCK?! STOP BEING PETTY AND HIDE ALL THE SHAMPOO IN THE DORM AWAY!!!!’

Honestly you forgot about the shampoo. It wasn’t your intention to ‘hide’ them - you just simply lent the spare one you had in the dorm to Chaeyeon. The supermarket wasn’t too far away, so you thought you could go and buy another bottle before your roommate showered but with the desperation of trying to purchase a rubber duck, the thought simply got lost. God, the anger and frustration was building up. You hated showing your tears. But damn it, why are they spilling now? Especially in front of your roommate?

‘H-hey...Are you...c-crying?’

You couldn’t answer her as you sobbed into your arms. You pulled your legs even closer and you habitually tried to make yourself seem smaller. Damn it. You just want to disappear so that she doesn’t see you this vulnerable. But you reckon life probably hates you. Why else would your annoying roommate that you never asked for, saw you breaking down?

You could hear hurried footsteps running off somewhere in the dorm. Not even a minute later, those footsteps could be heard again, though this time, they were a little slower and cautious. And they were getting louder and louder in your ears.

‘H-hey...don’t cry. Does the duck really mean that much to you? L-look it’s been two weeks and because of assignments, I wasn’t able to actually enjoy a bath and use the duck. It’s still clean, okay? Except for this little white strip of paint here on it’s wing...’

Looking up, you could see a rubber duck held to your face. Though your vision was blurry, you could tell it was the very same duck that the two of you fought over. You reached out to hold it in your hands as more tears spilled out.

‘Thanks...’

‘N-no worries. Just uh...don’t cry again. I don’t really know what to do with people when they cry.’

A pause.

‘Why did you want the rubber duck anyways?’ you asked as Yena shuffled to sit down next to you, shoulder pressing against yours.

‘Hm? Oh...It’s stupid but Yujin, Chaewon and I were having a waterfight at their building. Art buildings have all the supplies you know? But somehow one thing led to another and Mr Ducky got caught in the crossfire. He died a brave death and was sadly buried with the rest of Chaewon’s garbage.’

‘...Are you telling me your rubber ducky broke because you guys were being violent?’

‘Er...Maybe...?’

‘...’

‘Look, just...how about you? You better have an amazing reason for wanting to buy a rubber duck or I’ll take Mr Ducky the Second back.’

‘I need it for the fundraiser.’

‘The what?’

‘The fundraiser. Our college has a fundraiser called the Rubber Ducky Race. You get to adopt a little rubber ducky on the day of the fundraiser and we will dump it into the stream. We then record the times and see who’s rubber duck is the fastest to reach the end goal. You win prizes and the money used for the adoption is collected and fundraised to the charity of your choice. The problem was that we were missing five. I managed to purchase the other four, but...’

‘You’re missing one because of me...’ finished Yena as she leaned her head back, her eyes trained to the window.

The silence engulfed the two of you. And god was it awkward - maybe not her but on your part it was. You didn’t want your roommate to judge you for crying. Yena is definitely the type of person to tease you to no end for crying over a stupid reason. You wanted to show Yena you were thankful for her selfless decision and that you were sorry for all the petty things that you’ve done to her up until now (though the shampoo incident was definitely NOT part of that list). Deciding it was best to be civil and get along with Yena, you decided to extend an invitation to her.

‘...Do you...want to adopt a rubber duck in a day's time...?’

‘I’d love to,’ said Yena with a grin on her face.
