sweet dreams

sojung blames herself for the accident, blames herself for not being able to protect the woman she loves, blames herself for not being there. while yerin watches her grieve.

and there’s a pang of pain that hit yerin’s heart everytime she looks at her.

it had been a while after the younger's passing and sojung hasn't gotten over it. everyday, sojung repeats the same cycle; wake, eat, sleep. it was almost as if sojung had become a ghost of her own.

yerin also notices sojung hasn't been sleeping well. in addition to the older woman waking up every two hours and the frequent tossing and turning, she started sleep talking a lot too. the circles underneath sojung’s eyes become more prevalent and she started to lost any will or interest for anything.

so yerin begins giving her dreams.

it comes as a surprise to yerin, finding out that whatever this was was possible. she wasn't really expecting anything when she tried iit for the first time. the spirit also wasn't really sure how it worked, or how she was able to do it.

the first night she gives the older woman dreams, she gives her the memory of their first date. yerin remembers it very vividly.

after hours of talking and coffee and laughing, yerin's date offers her a ride home, and while she says she doesn't mind taking the bus or walking home, sojung insists.

it's only been the first date, but somehow yerin feels like she's known sojung for so long. being with her makes sense, it feels right. yerin can't exactly put her finger to what makes her feel like that, but she's positive about it, about sojung.

"thank you for tonight, i had fun." sojung tells her.

yerin doesn't come in, she stays outside there with sojung, with the door to her apartment slightly ajar. yerin looks at the woman who's still standing in the hallway and gives her a small smile.

she musters all the courage inside of her and says, "would you wanna go out again sometime then?"

and sojung? she doesn't hesitate, it's an "i'd love to!"

a weight is lifted off yerin's chest when she sees sojung smile in her sleep, and she smiles a bit too.

and sojung wakes up in the morning with a big smile. she's well-rested and she's bright and happy, just like the sojung yerin knows.

yerin knows what she has to do. it becomes a nightly routine. yerin watches sojung every night and gives her dreams. a different night, a different memory.

memories like the first i love you,,

both of them are seated on a small sheet of green plaid fabric. it's awfully chilly outside, but they don't really mind, the body warmth they got from each other and the heat the bonfire radiated was enough for them.

sojung thinks it's nice, to get away from the city, to be able to be here with yerin. no noise, no worries, just the two of them snuggled up against each other

she also can't help but admire how beautiful yerin looked that night. her face glowing with an orange tint, her hair pulled tightly into a ponytail, and a coat that was almost twice her size to help keep her warm.

an inhale, then an exhale. sojung takes the other's hand and interlocks it with her own.

"yerin, i think i love you. i don't think i want you to leave me, ever."

or that road trip to incheon to meet yerin's parents,

the car is loud with giggles and the soft music coming from the radio.

"hey, stop! i can't focus, yerin!"

yerin doesn't respond at all, only continues to cover sojung in kisses while she tries her very best to keep her eyes on the road.

"i'm serious, yerin." is what sojung says, the stupid grin on her face, however, say the opposite. "we don’t want your parents to see me like this, hair all messy and lipstick stains everywhere, do we?"

yerin hums lowly. "i’m sure they won’t mind, you look good regardless."

"they’re gonna love you, babe.”

and that day when they first met.

"hwang, i don't get why i have to come to this. i have work stuff to do." yerin pouts, crossing her arms at her best friend.

eunbi pulls the door open and drags her inside anyway, ignoring the other girl's pleads. "you have to come. yewon's bringing her friends too."

"i still don't get why i have to come. you didn't have to bring me just because your girlfriend's bringing her friends."

the shorter girl turns to face her and sighs.

"you and yewon are the most important people to me. it'd mean the world to me, to us, if you did this. so please just go along with it?"

yerin purses her lips. after saying something like that, from eunbi especially, who'd be able to say no?

when eunbi walks both of them over the table, they're greeted by not just yewon, but three other people seated there as well.

but yerin's focus is on the woman seated beside yewon, she's stunning and the other woman can't seem to take her eyes off her. there's something about her that was captivating, and it pulled yerin deeper and deeper by the minute.

the woman, who's now introduced herself as sojung, looks back at her and gives her a smile that reaches her eyes

yerin promises herself this wouldn't be the last time she sees sojung.

sometimes, the ghost even gives sojung the things she's never been able to give her during her time. she fills sojung's mind with new memories, yerin makes up for all the time they've lost.

through dreams, yerin gives them the future they've always wanted and fulfills all the promises that'd been left unfulfilled.

and while yerin started doing this for sojung, she couldn't help but admit that a part of her needed this too. she needed nothing else, had nothing else, but these nights with sojung. it made her feel alive and gave her a sense of purpose and of security.

it goes on for a long time, the days become weeks and the weeks eventually become months.

and although she can't feel the warmth of sojung, or wrap her arms around her beloved, she feels content just lying there with her.

although, yerin is dead, dead doesn’t mean gone, because she’s here, right beside sojung every night.

and yerin won’t leave until she knows sojung can sleep well at night, until she’s sure sojung is happy.
