Blanket Buddies

Mondays

The following morning, Joohyun woke up in one of the worst moods that she had felt in a long time. Last night with Seungwan had gone so well until it hadn't.

------------ *last night*-----------------

She felt Seungwan start to lean in closer and as her lips ghosted hers, the sound of a revving engine caused them to jump apart. The snowplow that had been driving up and down the streets had finally reached the parking lot just meters from them and decided to make its presence known. As a thousand words (none of them nice enough to be able to be said out loud) started rushing around in her mind, she looked at a startled and wide-eyed Seungwan trying to catch her breath.

"You okay?" Joohyun had said, trying to reach out and place a comforting hand on the flustered woman's arm. Her outstretched hand would be met with nothing but air as Seungwan quickly jumped away and out of arm's reach from Joohyun. The look on Seungwan's face was a mix between embarrassed, horrified, and annoyed and Joohyun knew that whatever moment that had occurred between them just seconds prior was long gone, plowed away just like the snow that had been on the road.

Clearing , Seungwan snapped out of whatever stunned haze she was in and nodded her head towards their hotel. "We should you know, we should uh, yeah..." she said, scratching the back of her neck awkwardly before turning around and shuffling quickly towards the back entrance of the building. Joohyun had never seen the shorter lawyer as shy and unsure as she had just been and in any other circumstance, she would have found it endearing but given the current scenario being that a stupid ing snowplow decided to kiss block her from finally making a move on her crush, she couldn't help but find it anything less than aggravating. Seungwan was already through the doors of the backside exit when Joohun finally calmed down enough to relax her face into a neutral enough look so she wouldn't scare the hotel staff. Quickly taking a glance around to make sure that no one was watching her, Joohyun stomped her feet into the snow and let out a couple of silent curses before speed walking her was into the hotel.

The short amount of time that it took her to get to the shared room was spent in silence as Seungwan had already managed to slip into the elevator and into their room before Joohyun had probably even entered the building. As she entered the room, Joohyun could hear the sound of the shower running and immediately figured that Seungwan wanted to minimize the amount of time she spent talking to her. She decided to test this theory when Seungwan exited the bathroom, already dressed in her baby blue silk pajamas and her hair wrapped up in a messy bun.  Her face was free from any makeup and the natural rosiness to Seungwan's cheeks was shining in the soft lamplight that washed the room from beside the bed. Joohyun could stare at the natural beauty forever but, just as she had predicted, Seungwan's eyes widened slightly when she noticed Joohyun's stare and she quickly ducked her head and rushed deeper into the room.

"Bathroom is all yours, I'll take the floor with a couple of blankets for tonight," the panicked woman mumbled out pretending to shuffle through her suitcase. Under any other circumstance, Joohyun would argue to the death with Seungwan about just joining her on the bed but after the reaction that Seungwan was giving her, Joohyun just decided to answer with a curt nod and swiftly grabbed her things for the bathroom.

After washing her hair and finishing up her nighttime routine, Joohyun stepped into an already pitch black room with the only light coming in from the moon. Using the faint light, she navigated towards the bed and noticed Seungwan's small body looking like a lump under a pair of blankets near the corner of the room.

"Seungwan... are you sure you're ok-"

Before she could even get the question out, Seungwan's hand shot up in a thumbs-up sign followed by a mumbled out "yeah."

Annoyed and frankly, a little hurt, Joohyun let out a quiet huff before burying herself under the remaining blankets, her dreams being filled by the girl curled up in a ball just a couple of feet away.

------------ *present time*-----------------

The sun streaming in through the blinds only annoyed her more as Joohyun shifted herself into a sitting position. Peaking over the bottom edge of the bed, she saw a neatly folded pile of blankets and a pillow sitting where Seungwan had slept last night. Confused at the absence of her partner, her WORK partner, Joohyun reached for her phone where it was sitting charging on the bedside table.  It was still pretty early, the phone clock flicked to 7:35 am as she opened it with her fingerprint. Thursdays were the days that Sooyoung sent her the list of updated evidence lists, statements, and other case-related things so she could read over them before Friday's meeting filled schedule. However this week, because of her and Seungwan's trip, Sooyoung had to attend the meetings on her behalf with Yeri also filling in for the other missing lawyer.

Scrolling through the pdf that was uploaded to her drive and making notes for her secretary, Joohyun couldn't help but let her mind wander to what could have happened last night had the snowplow driver decided to kindly off. If they had kissed, would they have done more? Would they have a talk about their feelings for each other? Realizing that grumbling over a missed opportunity would do nothing to benefit her, Joohyun swung her legs over the edge of the bed and dragged herself to the restroom.

The door to the bathroom was propped open by a towel on the doorknob as she slowly pushed it peeking in to see if Seungwan was in there. The air in the room was still a little damp signaling that Seungwan must have taken a quick morning shower just a short while ago. Today they had plans to visit a couple of the smaller establishments to see if they could gather any information from the shop owners and workers about their case. Putting on enough makeup to cover the bags under her eyes, Joohyun pinned her hair into a bun and changed into her "I look stupid but it's too cold to think about looking presentable" outfit. The cold had her dressing in what felt like thousands of layers but to Joohyun, every layer mattered. Her ability to keep her body heat up to an acceptable level was virtually nonexistent and by how things looked, Seungwan wasn't going to hug her warm any time soon.

Speaking of the devil, the before-mentioned tiny blonde lawyer was still nowhere in sight and not a single message from her appeared on Joohyun's phone screen. After waiting a couple of minutes longer, Joohyun's stomach finally got the best of her and she left a written note on the bedside table in case Seungwan came back when she was out looking for food. The second she stepped out of the hotel's revolving doors, a gust of chilly November air blew in her face causing Joohyun to curl into her own body as she moved through the crisp breeze.

Walking through the same streets that she had last night, Joohyun could finally appreciate the true beauty of the little ski town that they were staying in. The buildings, all low-rise wooden cabins looked like something straight out of a fairytale with the light dusting of snow laying on the rooftops and the smoke coming out of the chimneys. Big beautiful evergreen trees encapsulated the area and left the air smelling just slightly of pine needles and tree sap. The bakery that Joohyun was planning on visiting was towards the outer edge of town near what was supposed to be "the prettiest location in town" as the waiter at the restaurant had said yesterday. Turning the corner, the bakery finally came into view and Joohyun finally understood what the man had been talking about. The bakery itself was small, nothing too different from the other cabins in town, but it was the view that splayed out behind the bakery that made her jaw drop. A crystal clear blue lake sat in the center of a sea of trees that was marred with the tests and turns of the ski slopes from the mountains. The light layer of ice that had formed on the edges of the lake glistened under the rays of the sun and fallen trees covered with moss created tiny bridges over the smaller parts of the lake. The view was nothing short of perfection and as she looked out over the beautiful valley, something- someone- near the lake caught her eye.

Seungwan sat near the water's edge, blonde hair gently swaying with the breeze and as Joohyun descended the stone stairs towards the water, she noticed the small frown on the other's face. Once she was a closer distance to Seungwan, Joohyun cleared to alert the other woman of her presence.  Seungwan jumped slightly, and Joohyun almost felt bad for disturbing her peace until the frown that had been sitting on the younger woman's face was replaced by the signature smile that Joohyun loved.

"Morning Hyun," Seungwan croaked out as she got up to walk towards Joohyun. She had heard Seungwan's morning voice before it was light and delicate and this was not it.

"Are you okay?" Joohyun asked as Seungwan got closer.

"I'm fine I just-"

"Seungwan." Joohyun cut her off, raising an eyebrow as if challenging her to try and lie.

With a long sigh, Seungwan let her shoulders sag and her head slowly lower as she spoke. "The ground was pretty cold throughout the night so I think I might have lost my voice cause of the cold," Seungwan whispered. Guilt flooded Joohyun as she recalled seeing Seungwan balled up on the floor last night. The girl must have been freezing her off as she slept peacefully. This wouldn't do, especially since they had another night to get through.

"You're sleeping with me tonight."

Seungwan's head, which had been hanging down in embarrassment and shame, shot up so quickly that Joohyun was worried the shorter girl got whiplash. "I'm WhAt," Seungwan squeaked out, voice cracking harder than a puberty ridden teenager. Realizing what she just said, Joohyun's face began to mirror that of the lawyer in front of her.

"I- I meant you know, I meant uh, not that!" Joohyun coughed awkwardly, the snow on her shoe suddenly becoming the most interesting sight in the world. "You can't go another night without sleep, you have to drive us home tomorrow and I am not getting in your car without you being properly rested," Joohyun finished straightening up and trying to collect any of the confidence she had left. "We are sleeping in the same bed and nothing you do will change my mind on this."

"Joohyun it's fine, I can-"

"Nope."

"Hyun, I swear-"

"I can't hear you."

"But-"

"No."

With a dejected and annoyed huff, Seungwan stomped her foot into the snow. Cute Joohyun thought to herself as she watched the tiny temper tantrum unfold in front of her. The redness of Seungwan's cheeks only added to the overall effect of acting like a toddler.

"Fine, but only because I genuinely think it would endanger both of us if I couldn't sleep again and because my voice might give out if I try to argue," Seungwan rolled her eyes and reached to loop her arm through Joohyuns. "You really hate losing arguments don't you?" the sick lawyer asked as the pair made their way back towards the doors of the bakery.

Joohyun could only smirk as the warmth of the bakery enveloped her when she entered.

"That's why I make such a good lawyer Wan."

--------------------------------------------

After a solid and carb-heavy breakfast that consisted of 3 of the specialty pastries, two mugs of hot tea, and one very annoyed Seungwan who got her coffee privileges taken away because "tea is better for your throat", the two lawyers set out to visit the last location that the victim was seen in the town.

Jack Levison, the murderer- well the accused murderer for now- was a known name in the little ski town of Yorkland Heights. He owned a part of the ski resort and his marketing firm often hosted large events in the town to allow it to bloom into the ski hub it is today. Seungwan had done some background research on him and his endeavors and according to Seungwan, there was "no substantial negative press" behind him. Definitely not enough to push for a search of property or anything. Most of the people in the town also had no negative rep against him either, as proven by the baker who, when questioned, shrugged in Joohyun's direction and instead offered her a free hot chocolate for the road.

As they walked towards the ski rental, the last known location of the victim, Jennifer, Joohyun sipped on her hot chocolate and thought to herself. In her many years of being a lawyer, or studying to be one, she had to have been a witness to hundreds of trials and case studies. From something as small as petty theft to obviously the more serious topics such as ual abuse and homicide, one thing that Joohyun had stuck to always was her life-long motto "no crime is perfect if you look deep enough" and she knew, this one wouldn't be different. Sparring a quick glance at the shorter woman next to her and then down to their intertwined hands, Joohyun couldn't help but smile to herself. With Seungan as her partner, they could work twice as quickly to hopefully end this case before the business tycoon could cover his tracks.

Seungwan slowed them before a small cottage-like building not too different from the others that lined the main street. However, unlike the others, the ski shop had lines of skis and snowboards that could be rented out to anyone who needed them. As she walked through the lines admiring the beautiful designs and shapes of the snowboards, the shop owner emerged from the back brushing off snow from his coat.

"Can I help you ladies with anything," the man, a tall and burly man with an impressive beard, asked.

"We were actually wondering if we could ask you some questions about the murder of Jennifer Davidson?" Joohyun asked, stepping closer to the desk. "My name is Bae Joohyun and this-" she gestured to behind her at Seungwan "- is my partner Son Seungwan. We are the lawyers assigned to the case."

For a few seconds, the man stared at her, as if analyzing what she just said, before he shook his head and narrowed his eyes. "I was wondering when the city rats would come looking for more proof to put away my boy Jack," he said as he grabbed a snowboard off the wall and started to wax it. "You have no business walking into my business and asking these full of questions that you want answers to. He's innocent and I won't say a word against that."

Joohyun didn't expect this type of reaction but it wasn't her first time getting denied on her first attempt. As she was about to open to try sweet-talking her way into some information, the burly shop owner slammed the board onto the desk startling Joohyun and she stumbled into Seungwan's front.

"I know what lawyers try and do. They try and weasel their ways inside your mind and get you to spill lies. Well, news flash sweetheart, I'm smarter than that and Jack is a good man. He helped me financially stabilize this place and I won't let you and your friend mess with him. I don't care that the girl was last seen here, good for her, her last sights were of these mahogany walls." He laughed out before straightening out. "Get out of my shop and don't send any more lying heads like yourselves in here." With a final look, the man turned, threw the snowboard back on the wall, and disappeared into the back.

It was silent for a few seconds before Joohyun felt the arms that had wrapped around her waist to prevent her from falling tighten. She felt Seungwan sigh out a long exhale before the woman behind her started laughing gently. The puffs of air that Seungwan was releasing tickled her on the back of the neck and momentarily the shock of what just happened floated away before a crash in the storage room brought her back to reality.

"So that went well," Joohyun huffed out with a frustrated groan. "He was the only access to the security cameras and Wan," She turned around to look the shorter lawyer in the eyes, " those are the only chance we have."

The case, while simple on the surface, was proving to be a bigger pain in the than anyone had imagined. Businessmen, especially rich ones like Jack, never went down easy. If they didn't get the cameras the case would take so much longer and Joohyun knew, she knew that Jack had people working to cover his tracks at this very moment. Before she could stress out any further, Seungwan's terminally warm hands came up and cupped her face.

"It'll be fine Hyun, we can just go look at the shops next door and see if those cameras saw anything," Seungwan reassured her while brushing her thumbs over Joohyun's cheekbones.

The duo exited the shop and was about to turn to walk towards the other shop's door before a feminine voice stopped them in their tracks.

"You're looking for the camera footage?" The voice spoke out from somewhere between the racks.

Joohyun turned around quickly, shocked at the question. In front of them stood a relatively tall girl in a flannel and snow pants. She was holding a snow-covered snowboard in her right hand and a helmet with glasses in the other meaning she had just gotten off of the slopes.

"Yes, yes we are," Seungwan answered for them, also clearly confused by the woman in front of them.

Said woman nodded as she kicked some leftover snow from her boots. "Cool cool, I can get you them if you need them for your trial thing."

Joohyun watched as the girl nonchalantly began to clean her snowboard with one of the towels on the racks. Seungwan nudged her gently and silently gestured to the now crouching woman, a questioning look in her eyes. Shrugging her shoulders in return, Joohyun understood Seungwan's hesitance and confusion with this woman.

"Uhm," Joohyun began, extending her hand in front of her. "My name is Ba-"

"I know I listened to your conversation with my uncle. right?"

Joohyun's eyes widened at the bluntness of the taller woman and she's pretty sure she could hear Seungwan's jaw drop open in surprise.

"Yeah I mean clearly we don't get along otherwise I wouldn't offer to help you guys plus, I'm trying this new thing where maybe a good deed could get me something good you know?" the woman said as she finally finished cleaning her board. "My girlfriend always tells me I need to be more open or whatever," she shrugged.

Noticing the stumped looks on both of their faces, it must have finally clicked in the girl's head that they were lost in this conversation.

"You know for lawyers, you're not that bright but to spell it out for you, I'm Yoo Jeongyeon and the dude that yelled at you is my lovely uncle and if you two-" she gestured between Seungwan and Joohyun "- want the security footage, then I can help you get it."

"With all due respect, why would you even want to help us?" Seungwan said, snapping out of the daze.

The girl- Jeongyeon- scoffed as she racked her board. "Let's just say Jack made one or two very unsolicited actions towards my girlfriend. Her name is Nayeon, she works as a barista at the coffee spot within the main hotel in town. I tried to tell him off and even told my uncle about it but, didn't change till he found the Jennifer girl..." Jeongyeon trailed off.

Joohyun stepped forward and placed a hand on Jeongyeon's shoulder. "The tapes would help us get him in prison and away from you and Nayeon for a long time," she said gently squeezing the taller girl.

Jeongyeon nodded curtly and made a move for the front door. "My uncle ends his shift at like 5:00 when the slope lights turn if one of you wanna come around and grab a hard drive for the month of September, I'll have it ready for you," Jeongyeon finished with a tight-lipped smile and disappeared into the shop with a jingle of the bells on the door.

They watched the door for a couple of moments before turning to look at one another and then slowly starting down the street.

"Hyun?"

Joohyun hummed in response.

"You think she really means it?"

"I think we'll see at 5:00 won't we?"

--------------------------------------------

The rest of the day they had decided to split up and ask around different shops for any information.

One of Joohyun's stops had been the coffee shop that Jeongyeon had mentioned. She had the opportunity to interview Nayeon during the other girl's break and she was very thankful for the opportunity. What Nayeon had told her about Jack's stalking and actions was enough to at least get a warrant to search through his apartment in town if they failed to get the camera footage from Jeongyeon. According to Nayeon, Jack had on more than one occasion tried to seduce her without her consent and even gone as far as following the girl home to try to get in her pants. Thankfully, Jeongyeon had been there.

After Nayeon had to excuse herself from their conversation because she had to go back on the clock, Joohyun had visited the gift shop and the barbeque restaurant to try and get any more witnesses (although she would admit, the restaurant stop was more for her own benefit than anything else). No one else had said anything to her about it besides shrugging their shoulders and offering her their sympathy. At least it was better than yelling, Joohyun thought to herself.

Seungwan had volunteered to pick up the hard drive from Jeongyeon since she had decided to sleuth around that side of the town for the day.

Jeongyeon.

Joohyun still didn't know if the girl was trustworthy enough to send Seungwan there by herself but, seeing as they did have to be somewhat sneaky about the situation, it wouldn't make sense to both go back to the shop together. As the time neared 5 pm Joohyun decided to stroll down the main street slowly making her way closer to the shop while still maintaining a large enough distance as to not be seen. Leaning against one of the buildings she plucked her phone from her hand and scrolled through her Twitter feed to pass the time. She had just begun using the website to try and learn more about Seungwan's favorite group, Red Velvet, but quickly got into it for herself as well. Reveluvs, the Red Velvet fanbase, were extremely good at promoting their girls so she couldn't help but get into the void that is stan Twitter.

After a couple of minutes of scrolling through people screaming about some "Wenrene" thing, Joohyun heard footsteps quickly approaching her. Too quickly.

She looked up from her phone just in time to see a flash of blonde sprint past her and tug her along. Her brain had yet to catch up to the situation but her body autopilot thankfully understood that she should begin running as fast as she could. Looking behind her she could see the tall build off the shop owner quickly closing in on them with ski poles in each hand. Seungwan tugged her along as fast as she could but Joohyun was never the best runner.

"I'll get your asses and hand them to the police on silver ing plates," he screamed as he almost caught up to Joohyun. She could feel the wind whipping her face as she tried to speed up and distance herself from the guy but it was in vain. She felt one of the poles brush against her back as he took a swing at her. One more swing and he'd be able to get her. As Joohyun braced for impact at any moment, she heard a large crash followed by several curse words from somewhere now further, behind her. Seungwan tugged her through the shortcut that led to their hotel and as they were about to disappear into the trees, Joohyun caught a glance of Nayeon standing over a spilled trash can with the angry shop owner laying in a heap covered in what looked like coffee grounds and trash.

Joohyun slowed down to a brisk walk as they entered their hotel lobby but the tension didn't leave her body until they were safely tucked away into the elevator and heading up to their room. As they rode up, the only sounds that could be heard were the pants coming from both of them as they tried to calm down their breathing.

"So," Joohyun broke the silence first. "Wanna tell me what happened? And why the angry man wanted to make me into a human kabob?"

"Jeongyeon- *pant* -harddrive- *pant* - he came back- *pant* - angry- *pant* - running," Seungwan, stumbled out trying to regain her composure. The blonde's face was a bright red from all the running and Joohyun couldn't help but start laughing. Not long after her, Seungwan joined in and they stumbled down the hallway like drunken university students returning from a night out.

They practically fell into the room and Joohyun still isn't sure how they ended up laying flat on their backs on the bed but here they were breathing back to normal and laughter dying down.

"Jeongeyon gave me the hard drive with the footage," a now put together Seungwn began, her voice slightly raspy from all the laughing. "I was about to head out when he came in through the front looking for something. Guess he was gonna call it trespassing or whatever, but thankfully Jeongyeon kicked me out the back door before he could reach for me over the counter."

Joohyun rolled to her side to stare at Seungwan who began to finish into her pockets. The blonde hair was slightly disheveled and the rosy tint to Seungwan's cheeks made her look so... so ethereal. The other lawyer's face broke out into a grin as she finally must have found what she was looking for and out of her pocket emerged a small black flash drive.

"Shall we watch?"

Wrapping her hand around the one holding the flash drive, Joohyun pulled them up and towards the computer on the desk. Hopefully, this was gonna be the easy part.

--------------------------------------------

Wrong. Oh so ing wrong. Like so incredibly wrong that Joohyun wasn't sure she has ever been so wrong about something in her life.

After four hours of replaying the same footage over and over and over again, they were nowhere closer to finding any evidence that could incriminate Jack. The footage that involved Jennifer and Jack was relatively short, they had only been in the shop for about fifteen minutes talking to the shop owner before leaving through the back exit.

Seungwan had begun angrily slurping the noodles they ordered for delivery from the ramen shop, so Joohyun had sent her to shower and calm down. Replaying the footage once again, Joohyun sighed into her hands. They were due to appear in court on Monday. In just 4 short days, they had to put together a plausible file of evidence to use and as of right now, it wasn't looking good.

Seungwan emerged from the bathroom sometime later looking a million times lighter and more refreshed and that's when Joohyun decided they should probably call it a night. Brushing her teeth and doing her routine, she slipped on her pajamas in the bathroom and tiredly dragged herself to her computer to shut off the autoplay of the security footage. Scrolling to the power down button, she stopped herself when something caught her eye.

The camera footage showed Jack carefully slipping something into his coat before closing the back door. Zooming in, Joohyun was able to slow the footage enough to see what it was. A gun. More importantly, THE gun that was used to shoot Jennifer Davidson and kill her.

"Wan, you have to see this," she quickly enhanced the image as Seungwan stopped drying her hair. The two sat in silence and watched over and over again as Jack slipped the gun into his coat and smiled before slipping out of the door behind Jennifer. Reaching forward, Joohyun paused the footage and sent it to Sooyoung with the message "enhance this as much as you can, have Seulgi and Yerim help." attached.

"You're absolutely brilliant Hyun," Seungwan exclaimed, engulfing Joohyun into a bear hug. "I can't believe we didn't see this earlier oh my god this is such a huge break!" Seungwan's smile had never been bigger as she looked fondly at Joohyun before retrieving her arms from around the older girl and starting to prepare her makeshift bed again.

Joohyun couldn't help but roll her eyes at the blonde woman's antics. Does she really think she forgot about their argument this morning? An argument that she had one may she add. Closing the laptop she grabbed the blanket from Seungwan's hands and carefully slipped into bed. "Come on blanket buddy! We had this talk already so stop arguing and sleep in the bed," Joohyun said strongly while snuggling deeper under the blankets.

For a second, Seungwan stood there frozen like a deer in the headlights before she turned off the lights and slipped into the covers next to Joohyun.

"Hey!," Joohyun exclaimed the second she could feel Seunngwan's cold feet on her shins.

As her eyes adjusted to the lack of light, she could make out the -eating grin of her partner staring at her. "I can't let you win all the time Hyun, you'd get too cocky," Seungwan said grin only getting wider as she reached for Joohyun and wrapped her cold legs around the older woman. Joohyun struggled to get out of the blonde's grip but soon enough realized the fighting wasn't worth it. "See? Loser."

Joohyun was a lot of things but a loser? Never.

Grabbing Seungwan's face by the cheeks, she slammed her lips on the smaller girls and kissed her. At first, she could feel Seungwan stiffen under her but the blonde quickly caught up with the situation and began reciprocating the kiss. Seungwan tasted funny Joohyun thought to herself as she moved her lips slowly against the others. Cherry but also like vanilla and a little minty from the toothpaste. She felt Seungwan weave her fingers into her hair and pull her closer as she swiped her tongue against Joohyun's bottom lip.

They kissed like that for a couple more minutes before Joohyun pulled her head back and released Seungwan's bottom lip back with a pop. The blonde flopped onto her back on the bed and they laid in silence before Joohyun chuckled. "A loser you said?"

"Shut up and cuddle me before I fall asleep without my blanket buddy in my arms."

Who was Joohyun to deny Seungwan cuddles? Within a couple of minutes, Joohyun was fast asleep in Seungwan's arms with cold feet still pressing up against her legs.
