Basics

Japanese language 101

Japanese is usually written with a combination of 3 types of characters: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji (Chinese)

Hiragana is used for function words (ex: in, at, on) and inflectional endings (to show negatives, tense, and so on) as well as words of Japanese origin.

As we proceed onto future chapters, I will introduce fun and easy ways to memorise these letters

Katakana is used mainly for words borrowed from other languages, such as keeki (cake)

Kanji, which is of Chinese origin, is used for content words, such as noun, verbs, and adjectives
