The God of Christmas

The Gods of Holidays

At first, Jo Yuri had expected to see a fat man with a big, white beard and small spectacles, barely fitting on his nose to deliver her gifts. But instead, there was a cute girl resembling a duck munching on the cookies that Yuri had put out for Santa.

She was very cute, in fact. She had a big, full bag beside her while she was chugging the milk. Was she the legendary Santa that Yuri's parents had always told her about? Then, as the cute girl finished her snacks, she took out some gifts out of her bag and placed them on the floor, softly beside the Christmas tree.

"Keep being the best that you are... uh..." the girl pulled out a long list and squinted when inspecting it. She then clicked her tongue. "Jo Yuri from Busan!" The cute girl then walked away from the Christmas tree and levitated out the chimney of Yuri's house. Yuri could hear jingle bells jingling as the mysterious girl disappeared from Yuri's home.

And that was Yuri's first encounter with her. That was when she was only 7 years old. She had mysteriously received a hamster toy for Christmas, her favorite animal. None of her family or friends had claimed that it was their gift to Yuri.

And now she's 18 and in her first year of college.

It's surprising to say that Yuri had forgotten all about this incident. After all, it was quite the scene that she had seen. She had told her parents about it too after the event but her parents had only scolded her for staying up late.

Now it was around Easter and Yuri was invited by her cousin, Kim Chaewon, to have an egg hunt. Exclusively for and older. Not that there was gonna be anything inappropriate but the prizes were slightly more expensive and the egg hunt was gonna be harder and in a more expanded area. It would be quite the bother to have little kids distracting the adults from having fun.

Chaewon was 19, a year old than Yuri, and was also in the same major as Yuri, music. Yuri loved Chaewon but she never really liked parties or big crowds. But her parents wanted to tag along so they took Yuri with them. The older generation had their fun by chatting and gossipping while the youngsters prepared the egg hunt.

Chaewon had invited all her friends. There was Son Wendy, Kang Seulgi, Park Jihyo and even Japanese transfer students, Honda Hitomi, and Miyawaki Sakura, who were all attending the same college as Yuri. Of course, Chaewon had more friends but they couldn't attend due to other parties that they had already been planning to go to.

There were 60 eggs in all. The time limit was 10 minutes, and the goal was to find the most eggs. The eggs would serve as a money system as the real prizes would come out and you would bargain your eggs for them.

Yuri shrugged. She was quite good at finding things, if she must say so herself, but she didn't want to seem cocky so she stayed silent. Apparently, Hitomi claims that she was a master at finding eggs, as she had travelled abroad at the USA before and she would always have egg hunts when it was Easter.

"That doesn't mean that you're any better though," Sakura tells her, but Hitomi ignores her. Apparently, Sakura was a god in games, so she would always be competitive in events like this.

The egg hunts starts now. All the girls scatter around, with all of them running in different directions. Yuri ran on a small bridge and checked under it. There was an egg! That was easy. This just proves Yuri's point even more. As Yuri runs around collecting eggs, she discovers something interesting.

There was a huge egg. Like, a huge egg. It wasn't humongous but it was bigger than the average sized egg (which was small). Yuri wondered if Chaewon or somebody else had hid this egg as well? Curiously, Yuri walked toward it and tried to pick it up to no avail. It was weird. Eggs weren't usually this heavy.

Then suddenly, a voice yells at her.

"Hey! What are you doing with my egg?!" a tall, yet cute girl yells at Yuri. Yuri turns to the side quickly and steps away from the egg. The girl was very tall. Maybe around.... 169 cm? Or maybe taller. She had a cute face though, and seemed quite young. She was in a bunny suit with bunny ears popping out from her hair. Yuri squinted. It didn't seem like she was wearing a headband or anything. Where were the ears coming from?

"Wait.... were you trying to steal my egg?!" she accuses Yuri. Yuri's eyes widen and she shakes her head.

"Oh gosh no!" Yuri defends herself against the giant bunny. The bunny girl pouts and walks towards the egg. She picks up the egg as if it weighted nothing and started comforting and cradling it like a baby.

Yuri raises an eyebrow.

"Who are you?" Yuri asks. The bunny girl lets the question hang in the air as silence only continues. Yuri clears , unsure if the bunny girl was ignoring her or just didn't hear her.

"I asked, who are you?" Yuri tried again. This time, the bunny girl shot her a glare. The bunny girl then sighed and gently plopped the giant egg on the ground. She pointed to the bucket of eggs that Yuri was holding.

"What you're doing is an egg hunt, right?" the bunny girl asks. Yuri nods slowly, not sure of what the girl was trying to say.

"For Easter, correct?" Yuri nods again in response. The girl then smiles (which was weird since Yuri had already gotten used to her pouting and frowning).

"And I, the great Jang Wonyoung, am the God of Easter! I am the Easter Bunny, that's what you humans call me!" the girl, Jang Wonyoung, claims. Yuri raises both her eyebrows and her lips slightly curve upwards. What an outrageous claim. It was so outrageous that Yuri couldn't help but laugh after.

"E-Easter bunny? What?! The Easter Bunny doesn't exist!" Yuri exclaims as she laughs loudly. Wonyoung pouts and places her hands on her hips.

"Yes I do! Don't you see my bunny ears?! I'm a bunny! And this is my uniform for Easter!" Wonyoung points to the funny bunny suit. "Though, I must admit, it does look stupid."

Yuri shakes her head in denial and laughter. This girl was probably in high school. There was just no way that such a tale would suddenly exist looking like a high school girl. Wonyoung crosses her arms and pouts again.

"Fine then! You'll believe that I exist once you witness another holiday come around!" Wonyoung tells Yuri. Yuri stops laughing and looks at Wonyoung with furrowed eyebrows and a confused expression.

"What do you mean?" Yuri asks Wonyoung. But Wonyoung only shakes her head.

"I can see that you've witnessed one of our kind before. That's why you could see me!" Wonyoung says, only confusing Yuri more. Wonyoung then smiles.

"See ya next Easter then!" Wonyoung bids Yuri goodbye as Yuri tries to stop her to ask for more answers. But as Yuri blinks, Wonyoung is gone. Yuri also notices that the giant egg has disappeared. She could hear Chaewon's distant voice in the back, yelling that time was up. Yuri checks her eggs to see that she only had 13 eggs. That wasn't bad, but as currency to buy for expensive gifts, that probably wasn't enough. Yuri sighed. She was probably just daydreaming. The Easter Bunny couldn't really exist, right?

But Yuri wasn't so sure. It felt so real. And then Yuri reflected on Wonyoung's words. I can see that you've witnessed one of our kind before. Yuri shivers. Had she really seen a holiday myth in real life? Yuri just couldn't remember. Yuri then shrugs everything off.

She was probably just day dreaming after all.

It didn't come around again until Halloween. It had been 7 months since the weird and supernatural incident but it has been pushed to the back of Yuri's mind. After all, no such incident had ever happened after that until Halloween.

Yuri was yet again, invited by Chaewon to a Halloween party. This year, Yuri decided to dress up as a hamster, since she was told that she had always resembled a hamster. Chaewon had dressed up as a fairy and invited even more people to the party. There were boys and more girls. There were some older people and even some seniors in high school who attended the party.

Yuri didn't really want to be around so many people, though, so Chaewon kindly allowed Yuri to stay in her room. Chaewon's room was clean but Chaewon was quite the lazy person so there were many things lying around the floor. Clothes, some pieces of random kids toys, and Yuri even found her charger that had gone missing a few months ago.

Yuri decided to clean up Chaewon's room. She didn't appreciate a messy room. She wonders how Chaewon even finds her stuff in this mess. As Yuri cleans up Chaewon's mess and was folding her clothes, a voice speaks out to her from Chaewon's bed.

"Hello, hello." Yuri turns around quickly, startled by the voice. It was a cute but short girl. She was dressed in a cat costume and had whiskers drawn on her face. Yuri raised an eyebrow. Was she Chaewon's girlfriend or something?

"Interesting, so the rumors were true," the girl suddenly said. She stood up from Chaewon's bed and sauntered towards Yuri. Yuri felt uncomfortable. The cute girl was very charismatic and Yuri felt a little scared of her. "You can see me, after all." The girl leaned in towards Yuri (though she was short, so she only had to bend her knees a little.

Yuri gulped. Who was this girl? Why was she intimidating her?

"If you were wondering about who I am, I will gladly introduce myself!" the girl said loudly. Yuri then watched as the girl hopped on Chaewon's bed to make herself taller.

"I am the great Yabuki Nako, the God of Halloween!" Yuri suddenly feels deja vu. Has she gone through this before? This weird 'God of holiday' thing? Then she remembers Easter.

Yuri clasps her hand over as her eyes widen. Was this what Wonyoung meant when she said that Yuri will believe that the Easter Bunny exists when another holiday comes around? And now she's frozen in front of the God of Halloween.

Nako chuckles. "Surprised, aren't ya?" she asks. Then Nako looks out the window and furrows her eyebrow. She then walks towards Yuri and kneels beside her.

"I don't have much time left, but I want to tell you something." Nako looks at Yuri seriously in the eyes.

"Please, please, spend your time with others. Please keep attending your cousin's parties. Because a wonderful girl like you deserves friends and your cousin is a wonderful friend, so if you hang out with her more, maybe you'll develop more friendships and not be so lonely all the time, okay?" Nako pleads. Yuri doesn't say anything as Nako smiles sweetly at her. Suddenly, there's a knock on Chaewon's door.

"Yuri, you in there?" Chaewon yells from behind the door.

Yuri quickly answers back, "Yes!" Yuri then turns to look at the God of Halloween once more but sees that she has disappeared. There was no trace of her ever being in Chaewon's room.

Chaewon opens the door and invites Yuri to come hang out with her other friends. Yuri was about to decline but then thinks about the mysterious God of Halloween's words. She then shyly accepts and Chaewon excitedly takes her outside.

This weird feeling of Chaewon being excited melts Yuri's heart because Chaewon is a wonderful person and Yuri has always felt insecure that she was a boring person. She thought that she had always bored Chaewon but now, seeing Chaewon so excited because of her makes her feel proud and accomplished.

Yuri didn't make any friends though. Yuri felt disappointed but she was still taking baby steps. Making friends doesn't come in just greetings and small, unimportant chats. Yuri would stutter when talking to somebody, which makes them uninterested and they eventually smoothly exit the conversation.

It was November now and Thanksgiving was right around the corner. Yuri wonders if there would be a God of Thanksgiving. After all, it's a holiday of thanks. Why wouldn't there be one?

Chaewon didn't invite Yuri over for Thanksgiving since she was already having a Thanksgiving with her closest family already. And Yuri was fine with that since she was also having a Thanksgiving with her family. She had a younger sister and her parents to be thankful for. Her younger sister always made her feel youthful and free again, as Yuri was in college and always stressed. Her parents were always supporting her and were very accepting. Yuri had many thanks to give.

As Yuri was preparing thank-you cards to her family and friends, she could hear somebody munching and crunching on food in her room. Yuri froze and turned her chair around to see a  pretty girl eating a whole turkey. Yuri quietly shouted as she ran to the girl.

"Yah! You aren't dropping any meat, are you?! I don't want mice in my room!" Yuri complains as the girl ignores her. Yuri then reaches for the plater of turkey but was stopped by the pretty girl's hand.

"Don't touch my food," the girl said in an intimidating tone that sent shivers down Yuri's spine. Yuri backs off muttering Okay... okay... Gosh, this girl was overprotective.

Yuri resumed on her thank-you cards, ignoring the pretty girl eating delicious food behind her. Yuri gulped, just thinking of the turkey. It must be delicious. And it was right there, behind Yuri. Yet, Yuri was determined to finish all these thank-you cards. She poured all her feelings and gratefulness into them.

Then, as Yuri was writing her last thank-you card, somebody had set a plate of turkey beside her with a fork. Yuri stopped writing and looked up to see the pretty girl staring at Yuri's card, reading it.

"A thank-you card to your parents, huh?" the girl said as she smiled slightly. Yuri nodded.

"Of course! I'm so grateful towards them. They always try to understand me and comfort me when I'm down and would support me in my hardest time. I wouldn't have gotten this far without them...," Yuri says, rambling on and on about her wonderful parents. Then, the girl shushes her.

"You probably know who I am. The God of Thanksgiving, Kang Hyewon," the girl introduces herself. Yuri nods slowly as Hyewon's smile grew wider.

"I'm glad that you're thanking everybody in your life. In all my years of observing humans, I haven't really seen a single human being grateful towards the people around them," Hyewon tells Yuri.

"Keep up the good work and you'll get a gift," Hyewon says, winking. Then, as it felt like Hyewon was about to leave Yuri, Yuri grabbed onto Hyewon's wrist.

"Wait!" Yuri exclaims as Hyewon stops. Yuri bites her lip nervously as she opens a drawer and pulls out three envelopes. She hands them over to Hyewon as Hyewon inspects them, front and back.

And there was bold writing on the envelopes. There was an envelope for the God of Easter, Jang Wonyoung, the God of Halloween, Yabuki Nako, and one for the God of Thanksgiving. Yuri quickly asks for the God of Thanksgiving envelope back shyly to write Kang Hyewon's name on it.

"I wanted to thank all three of you guys because.... you guys have changed my life," Yuri confesses shyly with a blush on her face. Hyewon smiles kindly.

"You really are a wonderful human," Hyewon tells Yuri as she was about to take her leave.

"I'll kindly deliver these envelopes!" Hyewon promises Yuri as Yuri hears the click of her door. Yuri notices her sister peeking her head in with a confused expression.

"Who are you talking to?" her sister asks as she looks around the room to see nobody but Yuri. Yuri just giggles and assures her sister that it was just Yuri muttering nonsense to herself. Her sister raises an eyebrow with a skeptical look visible on her face but shrugs it off and closes the door. Yuri turns around to look at her unfinished thank-you card to her parents.

Yuri finishes up her thank-you card to her parents and sighs. She then glances at the plate of turkey beside her, given to her by Hyewon. Yuri takes the plate into her hands.

Yuri's lips transform into a wide grin as she munches on the turkey.

It was around the merry season of gifts and today was Christmas Eve. Yuri's family hosted a party this time and they invited their relatives, including Chaewon's family. It was a crowded party with people whispering about their gifts for each other. Yuri had also played Secret Santa with Chaewon and her other friends.

Yuri doesn't know who got her name, but Yuri had fortunately gotten Chaewon's name. She doesn't really know what Chaewon likes or wants but she knows that Chaewon has always wanted to post her song covers online so she bought a mic and a camera for her. At first, Yuri considered buying Chaewon another gift because she loved the gift that she had bought for Chaewon that she might've taken it for herself but knew that she was being selfish so of course, she would give it to Chaewon instead.

Yuri and her friends decided to do Secret Santa first, before the actual Christmas gifts opening. Chaewon and Yuri had invited all their friends over to Yuri's house as well, so they were all cuddled and huddled up in Yuri's room. Turns out, a girl named Lee Chaeryoung had gotten Yuri's name. She was the sister of Lee Chaeyeon of the dancing major.

Chaeryoung had gotten Yuri a polaroid camera (somehow quite similar to Yuri's gift to Chaewon) and Yuri absolutely loved it. She bonded with Chaeryoung quickly and Yuri expressed her love for Chaeryoung and her gift.

Yuri loved the aesthetic photos that the polaroid camera would take and immediately started taking pictures of her friends on Christmas Eve. She treasured the pictures in a box that she always had (for some reason) and placed it right next to her laptop. She also played party games with her friends until it was time for the actual Christmas gifts opening.

Yuri had received multiple gifts from her relatives, such as clothing and a new guitar. Yuri loved everybody so much at the moment. She never though that she would feel so comfortable in big crowds before. But now, she felt as if she could face the whole world. She felt so happy in this moment that she totally forgot that there would be a special guest that would be coming around midnight of Christmas Eve.

Yuri decided to put out cookies and milk because it had always been a tradition in her family to do so. The cookies and milk would always disappear the next day on Christmas but Yuri had just assumed that it was because of mice or her younger sister.

She went to bed with a big smile and a happy heart but suddenly heard a thud and a groan from the living room. Yuri immediately got up and cautiously tip-toed towards her living room. Was it a thief? Yuri checked the scene. There was a person in a red suit and had a Christmas hat on. They were wearing black boots and had spectacles with circle lenses. Yuri's eyes widened.

She suddenly remember something. A feeling of deja vu again. She could imagine a young Yuri peeking out and seeing the same person here. They were a girl, and had cute ducky lips. They were munching cutely on the cookies while laying gifts on the ground under the Christmas tree.

"This Jo Yuri has always been receiving presents from me. She must be a really good person to constantly be on my good list...," the girl muttered softly as she finished up the meal that Yuri had laid out just hours before.

Then, Yuri decided to step out. As she took a step and revealed herself, the cute girl was startled and nearly fell on her as she screamed loudly but shortly. She immediately covered afterwards with her eyes wide open, staring at Yuri.

"Oh my gosh, a human! I'm not supposed to be seen by humans!" the girl exclaims softly as she panics at the sight of Yuri. Yuri laughed a little. How cute could the God of Christmas be? The girl wraps up her presents and smiles awkwardly at Yuri, realizing that fleeing wouldn't help the situation. So the girl decides to chat with Yuri for a little bit.

"Oh? So you've met Hyewon, Nako, and Wonyoung?" the girl asks as Yuri tells her the story of the goofy gods that she's met. Yuri nods in response and Yena chuckles, rubbing the back of her head.

"Yeah.... those three are quite the trio," the girl says as she rambles and reveals more about the gods. "Wonyoung is the youngest god right now, so she's a little childish and inexperienced as a god. Hyewon is a huge food lover and doesn't seem to really care about her job or humans, but I always see her smiling after encountering a kind and grateful human. And Nako is very mischievous. She loves pulling tricks to spook humans and even some gods, but she always encourages everybody to get along at Halloween parties."

The girl smiles when talking about the other gods. Yuri smiles as well. Who knew there was such a world that entwined with humans.

"So...," Yuri starts, breaking the silence and slightly startling the God of Christmas. "Who are you?" Yuri asks as she tilts her head in a cute way and her eyes really sparkle, reflecting the beautiful, white snow.

The girl grins cutely. "I'm Choi Yena, the God of Christmas!" she introduces herself. Yuri nods as Yena looks outside, just as Nako had.

"Oh gosh, it's almost time for me to return," Yena tells Yuri. Yuri hums in disappointment as Yena gathers her stuff.

"I'll always come back next year," Yena said. But then Yena turns to look at Yuri and on her face was a sad smile. "But you seeing us gods was just a coincidence. You've changed yourself for the better and you might never see us ever again. You might even forget us."

Yuri watches as Yena sadly packs her stuff. Yena then starts floating as she turns to glance at Yuri one last time.

"But you've given us gods such a wonderful memory and made us feel human again," Yena says shyly. "Hyewon would always scold me about how I got caught seen by a human, but I thought that she was just threatening me to do my job better."

Yena then starts floating higher and higher towards the chimney. "But.... seeing you again. All grown up and beautiful and nice makes me feel like I've completed my job."

Yena then raises her fist. "So, please keep being a wonderful person so I can keep delivering gifts to you!"

Then, just as Yena was about to bid goodbye to Yuri, the sun starts rising. It was weird. It had just been midnight awhile ago and now the sun was rising? And just as Yuri had expected, Yena was gone.

Yuri feels all warm inside. She then sees a small hamster toy on the couch. Has it been there this whole time? And as she looks around the empty living room with the empty plate of cookie crumbs and empty cup of milk, as well as the extra gifts underneath the Christmas tree, she wonders....

Who was she talking to just now?

there's a small detail that i've added to this story that reveals a little about the god's backstories. if you can spot it and make a little theory about it, that'll be great!
