“Minji are you sure you have everything?”

Minji rolled her eyes and pouted,

“Yes mom for the fifth time!”

“Clothes?”

“Yeah.”

“Toiletries?”

“Yes mom.”

“Passport?”

Minji checked her pockets and pulled it waving it to show her worried mother,

“The kimchi?”

Minji laughed,

“Yes mom, I’ll miss my flight if you keep this up!”

Minji’s mom cried while hugging her,

“I’m so proud of you, don’t forget to give grandma choi your application! We aren’t rich you know.”

Minji uses her thumbs to whip her mother’s tears,

“I know mom, I did my research and I promise I’ll call you when I land okay?”

Her mom nodded,

“And...?”

Minji pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed,

“And I promise I’ll bring back souvenirs. Aish so embarrassing.”

Her mother playfully hit her arm,

“Watch it Kim Minji! It isn’t every day a Kim like you gets a scholarship to a prestigious Japanese school!” 

Her mother’s voice rings through the terminal only causing Minji’s face to become redder. Her mom smiled as hugs her tightly,

“I guess this is it?,” Her mom looks as if she’ll cry again but Minji assures her, “Hey I’ll be home for Christmas before you know it ma? Plus you always have my number.”

Her mom sighed,

“Minji I can’t afford international calls....”

Minji sighed,

“I know but- just pretend! I’ll sing to you every night! Just like how dad used to, I promise mom. I’ll make you proud.”

Once passed security her phone rang and she answered without checking who it was,

Light chuckles interrupted her and she smiled into the phone,
