Yoongi stares at himself in the mirror, adjusting and readjusting the bunny ears headband, trying to get it to look natural and still feel comfortable around his actual ears, which he’s keeping flattened against his head. He tousles his hair so it falls over the band, hiding it as best he can so the ears look like they could be his own. Finally deeming himself bunny enough, he exits the bathroom with a sigh, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. After all this trouble, he hopes the reason behind his transformation will actually be at the lecture today. Not that it was really much trouble, more just a build up of courage he doesn’t think he’ll be able to muster up again any time soon.

“Yoongi?” a voice calls from down the hall, “Why are you… a rabbit?”

Yoongi glances at the other, Hoseok, but simply shrugs in response. His reasoning is stupid and he knows it, but he’s not changing his mind now, and he doesn’t want anyone else telling him it’s a stupid idea either.

“Identity crisis?” Hoseok laughs, and then, “Ohhh, I see. This is about Jungkook.”

“...maybe,” Yoongi responds, shy already. He rubs at his nape, gaze fixed on the floor as they walk to the lecture hall. Jeon Jungkook has been his crush for the better part of the past year, despite only having spoken directly maybe thrice in total. He’s a bunny hybrid, and while it’s not  completely unheard of for hybrids to date outside of their species, Yoongi felt like it’d maximise his already slim chance of impressing Jungkook if he was a bunny. Cats and bunnies aren’t generally known to mix well, after all.

Hoseok lets it go, thankfully, and instead babbles on about Namjoon, among other things -- but mostly Namjoon. It makes Yoongi smile and sets him a little more at ease.

Yoongi gets his stuff out for the class once they’re seated, proceeding to absently nibble on his pen and watch the students file in until the professor arrives. He hates how quickly his eyes are drawn to Jungkook when he shows up. Said boy walks in on his own, earphones in, and clad in an extremely oversized grey sweater, ears flopped down at the back of his head out of his bucket hat. Cute, is all Yoongi can describe him as in that moment.

Jungkook sits somewhere on the other side of the hall to Yoongi and Hoseok, and Yoongi only hopes he can catch him before he leaves after the lecture.

He does, in fact, manage to catch up to Jungkook outside the lecture hall before he disappears, Hoseok grinning overenthusiastically from the side, sending Yoongi a thumbs up before heading off himself.

“Um,” Yoongi starts eloquently. Jungkook’s eyes flick from his face to his ears and back. “I just- I know we haven’t really talked much before, but I…” Yoongi falters, struggling to say what he’s been building himself up all day to say.

“Would you like to go on a date with me?” he manages out all in a rush, eyes screwed shut, scared of the reaction he’ll receive. All he gets is a too-long beat of silence.

“It’s okay if you don’t!” he hurriedly adds, “I just wanted to ask you… and maybe you’d like to be friends, if not? Or not! Either way… I’m gonna shut up now.” Yoongi feels heat rising to his cheeks and he subconsciously reaches up to touch his bunny ears, real ears twitching ever so slightly but still laying flat.

“Weren’t you a kitty?” is what Jungkook decides to respond.

“Huh?” Yoongi says, looking up at Jungkook’s face instead of his chest where his gaze was previously locked. He honestly wasn’t sure if Jungkook would even know him, let alone remember what hybrid he was.

“I’m positive you were a cat. You had such cute little ears.” He reaches a hand out towards Yoongi’s head, and Yoongi blinks in surprise, but Jungkook stops suddenly, retracting his hand. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to…”

Yoongi blinks again, not quite sure if he’s being rejected or not yet.

“I am a cat,” he sighs eventually, looking away again in shame. So much for his idea. He twists the end of his bunny ear between his fingers, then takes the headband off and lets his actual ears stretch out. He’s pretty sure his cheeks are flaming red. He feels so dumb, but hey, it was worth a shot.

“This was stupid, I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking. I’ll just… sorry for taking up your time,” he mumbles and turns to walk away but a hand on his shoulder stops him.

“No, don’t- that’s not what I meant,” Jungkook quickly says, “You didn’t let me give you an answer.”

Yoongi blinks up at him. Quicker than Yoongi can react, Jungkook leans forward and presses the most fleeting of kisses to the apple of his cheek.

“I’d love to,” he continues, a massive grin beginning to split his face as he leans back again. “Go on a date with you, that is. And be friends.”

Yoongi blinks again, entire body feeling like it’s aflame. His hand subconsciously comes up to brush against the spot where Jungkook’s lips had been.

“For real?” Yoongi all but whispers.

“Of course!” Jungkook says with the slightest giggle, “Why wouldn’t I?”

Yoongi shrugs slightly, looking down and fiddling with the headband in his hand. “Because I’m not a bunny?”

“Why would that matter?”

“Yewon was.”

Jungkook lets out a breathy laugh. “That’s not why I dated her. I don’t care about that sort of thing.” He pauses. “So that’s why you were pretending to be a bunny?” Jungkook grins.

Pouting subconsciously, Yoongi says, “Well, lots of people do care about that, and I already didn’t even know if you liked guys so I wanted one aspect to be covered so I had some chance, at least.”

Jungkook reaches out and grabs Yoongi’s hands to stop his incessant fidgeting with the bunny ears. Yoongi looks up in surprise and is met with fondness pouring from Jungkook’s eyes.

“Well, it doesn’t matter now,” he says softly, “Kitty or bunny, I’d love to try dating you.”

Yoongi can’t stop himself from beaming. Swiftly, Jungkook slides his hands from around Yoongi’s to the headband within them, and in one smooth motion takes them and places them on his own head on top of his bucket hat, grinning stupidly. Yoongi lets out a soft giggle at the ridiculous(ly cute) sight.

“Now what does matter, is when you’re free.”
