Flowers

Flowers

It was six when Jinyoung finally stepped out of the cafe, marking the time his shift ended and he was free for the day. He hummed to the tune of a song he had recently gotten into as he strolled down the street, making his way to his dorm. However, he stopped walking when his phone chimed twice in a rapid succession, indicating that he received a text message. He dug his hand into his pocket and fished it out, turning it on, revealing messages from Jackson, one of his childhood friends.

"Hey dude," Jinyoung read silently, "Remember to bring a bouquet of flowers on your way back to the dorm. We don't wanna come empty-handed to Jaebum's house warming party. Thanks!"

Right. Jinyoung sighed, remembering that one of his good friends had finally saved up enough money to buy a house for him and his girlfriend to live in and had invited everyone to celebrate. Making a detour, he found his way to a nearby flower shop.

The little store smelled of fresh flowers, and Jinyoung loved it. The lavenders reminded him of his childhood and the dahlias seemed to give off a vibrant touch to the whole room.

He strolled down the rows of blossoms, surveying the arrays of beautiful and colorful species of plants absentmindedly, feeling lost in the scene until someone tapped his shoulder. He whirled around, but regretted it as soon as he realized that the momentum made the stranger fall. Unfortunately for him, the person wasn't the typical old florist lady or niece or cousin of one that was always shown in movies; she happened to the the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. Just his luck to have made such a first impression on her.

"I'm so sorry!" he exclaimed and extended his hand to help her up, which the girl gratefully took it. She dusted herself off once she was able to stand. He took the time to appreciate her beauty and came to the conclusion that she was about his age. She carried herself with a sense of gracefulness and precision, yet he couldn't help but sense an extreme amount of confidence in being a whole head taller than her.

"It's alright," she said, smiling softly, "I'm Jisoo. How can I help you?" But Jinyoung couldn't focus on anything she was saying, his eyes were drawn to her heart shaped lips, as he wondered what it would feel like to kiss them and her eyes looked like they held the stars in them.

"You have lovely eyes."

It slipped out before he could even stop himself, and by the time he realized he had said it out loud, she had already heard him. He felt his face burn red with embarrassment; he could literally die in a hole. Each second passed by sluggishly as Jinyoung anticipated her reply, his palms suddenly feeling sweaty.

"Thank you, I suppose," Jisoo responded, as she looked down at her shoes. "Yours are lovely too?"

He laughed nervously, "Thanks, I guess."

An awkward silence filled the room as each one waited for the other to speak up. Thankfully, Jisoo finally initiated the next step of the conversation between the two. "Um... Do you want a bouquet or a plant?" she asked, motioning towards the arrangement of potted plants behind her, "We have a great assortment of both." Jinyoung gazed around the room once more.

"I need a bouquet actually," he revealed. "One of pink and white lilies," he supplied, saying the first two flowers that he saw. He watched as she rushed away to make the bouquet, but noticed a small tinge of sadness in her eyes, leaving him baffled.

Jisoo walked over the a counter full of decorations and got out a stem binder and plastic sheet. "Come with me, "she called out over her shoulder as she moved on towards the isle of pink lilies. She picked nine of them (he counted) with a gentleness resembling that of a mother towards her child. Even though they had met only a couple minutes ago, he couldn't help but think she would be a great mother, wondering how it would be like if she had his kids. Quickly erasing whatever images he had imagined, he tried to refocus on the flowers. Once she had finished collecting the flowers, she went over to the red roses. Confused, Jinyoung jogged over to her.

"Wait, I asked for white lilies, Jisoo," he reminded.

"You shouldn't." He frowned, not understanding why.

Noticing his confusion, Jisoo explained, "White lilies are a symbol of Mary's purity and sometimes of majesty in the Roman myths, and I doubt that your girlfriend or date would want you to gift white lilies of all flowers to her if she understands their meanings." And he finally understood the reason she looked disappointed when he asked for such flowers. He lightly laughed, and it took him all of his willpower to stop himself from taking her into his arms and hugging her. His heart swelled with an emotion that he couldn't quite palce.

"I don't have a girlfriend," he clarified, grinning, and Jisoo's hands stopped mid-way. "One of my close friends is having a house warming party and I'm just buying him and his girlfriend a gift." He watched as Jisoo tried to hide her smile.

"Oh, then I think yellow roses would be nicer. They represent friendship and goodwill," Jisoo suggested, quickly trying to change the subject. Jinyoung nodded, now with a full-blown grin across his face. She trudged over to the yellow roses and picked out ten of them.

"Why ten of these? And nine of the lilies?" Jinyoung asked, out of curiosity.

Jisoo cut the stems to a reasonable size, tied them up, and wrapped the polka-dotted plastic cover around the bunch before answering, "I think its always nicer to have an odd number of flowers. Odd numbers are always better than even numbers. Even numbers are just so plain," she replied, her lips slightly pouting and her eyebrows creased as if she was in deep thought. She tied a royal blue ribbon around the stems and presented the finished piece to him. He found her absolutely adorable.

"It's gorgeous," he praised. Just like you he continued in his head.

"Thank you."

At first, he thought she was saying thanks for the part where he praised the flowers. He didn't realize that he had spoken his thoughts aloud again until he took a look at her face and noticed her cheeks were tinted a light pink. He could feel his ears heating up.

"I uh- didn't mean that!" He mentally punched himself, "No, wait! I mean, you are beautiful! Wait, no... Not in a creepy way, of course. Uhm... I-" He was cut off by the soft sound of giggling. Finding the situation funny, he too laughed along with her and they both dissolved in laughter before he remembered that he had a party to attend. He paid for the flowers and bid her a 'see you'. Not a good bye though, for that meant he wouldn't see her again in a long time, and he couldn't let that happen.

That night, as he and Jackson drove over to Jaebum's house, he boasted that the flowers he bought each had a special meaning. But when Jackson asked where he learned it from, Jinyoung went quiet. With that, Jackson bombard him with questions the rest of the drive to Jaebum's place.

-Time Skip-

Jinyoung found himself taking detours to the flower shop back home more often than he would admit. But not to buy flowers, he came for the special brunette haired girl that worked there, and he could tell that Jisoo was always glad to see him there too, with the way her eyes would always visibly brighten. He learned a lot of things about her, like her birthday, favorite food, band, and color. He also found out that she was the same age as him, and was studying medicine at a college nearby as well. As months passed, Jinyoung found his feelings for her growing more and more, to the point where he could barely restrain himself.

Jinyoung had just gotten off his shift and bought some spicy rice cakes from a vendor across the street from the cafe he worked at. The old lady had gifted him with a couple cans of beer, saying it was a gift to him for being handsome, which filled him with pride. Jisoo had been complaining that she was craving it for the past couple days, and he thought today would be a nice day to treat her. He was having a pretty great day so far, and the thought of ending it with Jisoo just made him all the more gleeful. That is, until he saw a guy, a little older than him, flirting with Jisoo, who was across the counter. The poor girl looked downright miserable. His easygoing smile was immediately wiped off his face, replaced with a scowl.

He stalked over to the two and interrupted whatever thing the guy had to say. Upon seeing him, Jisoo instantly smiled, showing of the way her eyes transformed into two crescents. "Sorry I'm late. I had to pick up something," he started, revealing the bag of spicy rice cakes and the cans of beer, placing them onto the counter.

Jisoo gasped, "I was craving this! Thanks Jinyoung, you're the best." Flashing him a quick smile, she quickly opened the bag and took out the container of food, quickly forgetting about the guy across the counter, who was currently attempting (and failing) to get her number. Inwardly, Jinyoung smirked as he watched her cutely open the container and bring out two pairs of chopsticks, handing him a pair.

The stranger let out an awkward cough, already feeling like a third wheel, before saying, "Here's my number Jisoo. Call me." He placed a little strip of paper on the table, scribbled on it was him number and tried for a wink before leaving through the door, but it came out more as a twitch than anything. Jisoo looked at the paper emotionlessly before picking it up and throwing it in the trash, proceeding to eat.

"You're so heartless Jisoo," he tried for a joke as he opened two cans of beer, placing one in front of her.

She halfheartedly rolled her eyes and shot back, "Well I've been waiting for this one guy to ask me out for the longest time now and he still hasn't made a move. So I guess I just have to keep on turning down other guys until he realizes that he's the one I like." And he almost drops his chopsticks. He stares at her for the longest time, but she acts like nothing had happened and continued munching down on the rice cakes, taking little sips of beer in between.

His heart is thumping as she finally looks up at him, when he does the most irrational thing he's ever done in his life (now that he looks back on it, actually decides it was one of the best decisions of his life). He takes her face in his hands and leans in, but hesitates at the last second. Their noses brush together as Jisoo whispers, "Kiss me," her breath hot against his mouth, and he obliges wholeheartedly. Jinyoung dips his head, catching her lips in his, both closing their eyes.

The kiss was slow and soft. Their lips fit and moved together perfectly like they were meant to be, and maybe they did. It was heaven. Wrapping one arm around her waist, Jinyoung pulls her even closer, if even possible, as the other one still cups her cheeks, while her own are stationed around his neck. All he can smell and think and feel is her. He's engulfed by everything that is Jisoo. Her lips are soft and taste like rice cakes, and he doesn't think he'll ever get enough of it.

Jisoo breaks the kiss and begins to slowly move away, but he just follows. She laughs breathlessly as he mumbles, "Not done yet," and pulls her face back to his, kissing her more fiercely than before. This time, taking her lower lip in between his teeth and lightly on it. And they stay there, in the corner of the shop, kissing for as long as he can remember.

And Jinyoung has never felt more complete.
