locked out

Sana was studying for her upcoming exam when she got an unexpected call.

She had her head buried in her books, while classical music filled her ears through her earphones; during her junior year in high school she had found out how much it helped her concentrate and ever since then it had become a habit of hers to listen to music while studying.

However, as she was underlying the keywords of the chapter she was currently stuck on, the music came to a stop and she halted her actions as well.

When she reached for her phone, she noticed someone was calling her; she couldn't help but furrow her eyebrows when she read the name flashing on her phone screen.

Why was Tzuyu, her roommate, calling her?

She unplugged her earphones from the phone and answered the call, putting Tzuyu on speaker mode and sipping from her Iced Cappuccino.

"Sana?" Tzuyu called for her in a rather soft voice, something Sana wasn't used to and which sparkled her curiosity on why her roommate had called her out of the blue. "Are you home?"

Sana set down her drink and nodded her head, forgetting for a moment that Tzuyu could not see her.

"Are you going to answer me or what?"

This time Tzuyu's voice was more hurried and something told Sana that she was starting to get annoyed. She facepalmed herself. Oops!

"Yes, I'm home; why?" she replied in a calm voice, but when she heard someone grunting on the other line, she didn't know how but she knew she had just made a mistake.

"I've been knocking on the door for the past ten minutes! Why didn't you answer it?" Tzuyu's tone of voice was now harsher than before, while she spoke to her through the phone; still, it wasn't the first time Sana had made her mad so it didn't really surprise her.

"Sorry! I was listening to music so I didn't hear you," Sana was quick to explain, while getting up from her seat.

When she reached for the door handle, though, she stopped in her tracks coming to a sudden realisation that made a smirk appear on her features.

She went back to her desk to take her phone, taking Tzuyu off speaker mode and bringing her phone to her ear.

"How come you can't open it yourself?" Sana asked her mischievously and she heard loud and clear Tzuyu sighing from the other side of the door.

She waited some seconds before her roommate eventually answered her in a defeated voice. "I forgot the keys on my nightstand. Can you open the door now?"

Needless to say, when Sana looked at Tzuyu's nightstand, the keys were indeed there.

"Oh my," Sana exclaimed amusedly. "Did the great Tzuyu forget her keys? After all the times she has made fun of me for it, now she's the one locked out; Karma really works in mysterious ways."

A heavy sigh could be heard on the other line and that only increased Sana's amusement; this was going to be so much fun for her.

"Do we really have to do this now?" Tzuyu asked her in a pleading way, but it was already too late to make Sana change her mind.

When she got no answer back, she understood that begging was useless and there was no way she could escape whatever Sana had planned to make her go through. Ugh!

"What do you want me to do?"

Sana smiled smugly at Tzuyu's question; for the first time ever, she was the one in control and Tzuyu was basically at her mercy.

It was a nice change from all the times she was the one locked out and Tzuyu refused to let her in, Sana thought.

"First of all," she started enthusiastically. "You should sit down, this is going to take a while."

She heard Tzuyu stomp her foot on the ground.

"Sana I haven't got time for this; I have to study!"

Sana snickered at the girl's actions. "So do I, but this is much more entertaining."

Tzuyu was shaking her head at her roommate's childishness, but still complied.

It was only a matter of seconds before both girls were sitting on the ground, leaning their backs on their side of the door.

"This is ridiculous," Tzuyu mumbled as students passing by gave her weird looks. "You're going to pay for this."

Sana raised an eyebrow at her words and laughed louder than expected, almost letting her phone slip from her hand.

"You call this ridiculous?" Sana asked Tzuyu accusingly, making the younger girl bit her lip as she anticipated what Sana was going to say. "How about that time you made me buy coffee for you to let me in?"

Tzuyu grimaced at the memory, before shaking it off and saying it was nothing much to Sana's displeasure.

"It was nothing? Everyone thought I was crazy!" Sana exclaimed in disbelief.

Suddenly, memories were coming back and she was starting to feel embarrassed all over again.

"Come on, Tzuyu! Just let me in," Sana begged her roommate, while she kept trying to open the door in vain. "I swear this it the last time I'll forget the keys home."

She could hear Tzuyu laugh loudly on the other side of the door, making her lose her mind.

"How about this," Tzuyu said in a firm voice and Sana was all-ears. "You bring me my favourite coffee in ten minutes and I'll let you in."

Sana's eyes were about to pop out. "What? The closest cafeteria is fifteen minutes from here and I don't even know what's your favourite coffee. This is insane!"

Sana's desperate tone didn't seem to faze Tzuyu who simply shouted back at her: "Then you should start running and wish luck is on your side today!"

"God, I can't believe you!" was the last thing Sana said before sprinting out to reach the cafeteria as fast as she could.

When Sana came back to the dorm, standing in front of her closed door, she swore she had never felt so miserable.

She had never had so many people call her a weirdo in one day; when she entered the cafeteria, she had gone straight to the counter, skipping the line; however, as she tried to explain the protesting clients in line that she had no time to wait for her turn since it was a life or death situation, people didn't really seem to care about it nor did they feel any kind of pity.

She ended up waiting for ten minutes and when she came back to the dorms she was twenty minutes late. Not only that, but she had also spilled the coffee she had gotten Tzuyu on her way back since she tripped on her own feet and fell to the ground.

Her clothes were dirty and she was sweaty; people kept looking at her and laughing under their breath.

Sana only held her head down as she wished Tzuyu would open the door so this torture would end.

"And you even waited twenty minutes before letting me in!" Sana shouted angrily, making a disgusted face at the memory.

"You were twenty minutes late so it was only fair if I waited twenty minutes before opening the door!" Tzuyu defended herself even though she was aware she was anything but innocent.

Perhaps, things got out of hand that time.

Sana suddenly gasped and only then Tzuyu realised she had said it out loud.

She brought her hands to her hair in frustration; this wasn't going to end well for her.

"Only that time?" Sana screamed in a rushed voice, making it almost difficult for Tzuyu to understand what she was saying. "What about the time you made me go to Chaeyoung's to borrow the books you needed?"

Tzuyu shrugged her shoulders. "You agreed to it, though."

Sana widened her eyes and scoffed at her words.

"That was before I knew they were four books! Each one of five hundred pages; did you know how heavy they were?"

"Well, not really; you were the one carrying them not me." Tzuyu snickered and she jumped up in surprise when Sana suddenly hit the floor.

"This is not funny!"

"You really think you can do it alone?" Chaeyoung asked Sana while eyeing her up and down.

The answer was obviously negative, but Sana couldn't tell Chaeyoung that; she was scared that if she were to show up with her, Tzuyu wouldn't let her in.

That girl could be the devil when she wanted to.

So, she masked her pain with a smile and told Chaeyoung she was good.

"I've been going to the gym lately, this is a piece of cake!"

Truth to be told, Sana had never stepped foot in a gym and while she was carrying the books back to her own dorm — the longest ten minutes walk she had ever gone through — she could feel her arm muscles slowly giving in.

She took half an hour to get back and when she was in front of her door, she set down the books to massage her sore arms.

Sana didn't want to imagine how she would feel the next morning.

She was so tired that when Tzuyu finally opened the door, laughing at her, she didn't even have the strength to say anything and simply aimed for her bed, falling heavily on it.

She really was exhausted.

"My arms didn't function properly for a whole week!" Sana grunted, while Tzuyu only rolled her eyes.

Thankfully, they had both hanged up and they were now talking through the door so that when Tzuyu muttered under her breath "drama queen", Sana did not hear her.

"I know you're probably making fun of me right now!" Sana yelled, making Tzuyu wonder whether her hearing was that developed or if she just knew her that well.

"Okay, I'll stop," Tzuyu stated, sighing faintly. She unlocked her phone to see what time it was and widened her eyes when she realised it had been already a hour. "Look, it's really late; can you let me in now?"

Sana laughed bitterly. "Why? Because it's already been a hour? One time you made me stay outside for two hours and a half!"

"That's not true," the other girl hurriedly declared. "I told you I was going to let you in when I finished studying and I let you go where you wanted instead of waiting out the door!"

"And that's normal to you?" Sana asked Tzuyu in an inquisitive voice; when she didn't get an answer back, she smirked. Two could play the same game.

"Okay then, I'll go back to studying and I'll text you when I finish. In the meantime you can do whatever you want!" Sana told her beamingly, getting up to get back to her desk and her books.

"That's not fair though! The only thing I need right now is to get in so I can get my books." Tzuyu begged her when she heard movements on the other side of the door and realised Sana had stood up.

The older girl smirked, while she turned around on her chair. "What did you just say? Speak louder! I can't hear you."

Sana giggled when she heard Tzuyu hurriedly get on her feet and start banging on the door.

"If you keep doing that, you'll break the door." Sana said, laughing when she stopped and grunted in return.

"Look, I'm sorry, okay?" Tzuyu tried to apologise, but Sana wasn't going to let her get away with it just like that.

"Sit back down, my dear," she told her with a scornful smile as she herself resumed sitting on the ground, leaning on the door. "I need more pathos from you."

"Do you really?" Tzuyu scoffed when she heard Sana laugh. "I'm sorry I made you go through that."

"Wow, you're really bad at this," Sana noted and Tzuyu banged her head against the door. "Say, is this the first time you apologise to someone?"

"Of course it's not," Tzuyu replied, almost offended by Sana's inquisition. "But I'm really tired and this is going overboard."

Sana raised an eyebrown. "You do realise that I'm treating you exactly how you've been treating me for the past year, right? However, this time the roles are reversed and I'm the one having all the fun."

Tzuyu didn't say anything; instead, they both stayed silent, thinking about the situation they were in.

"Was I this annoying all the time?" Tzuyu asked her, breaking the silence and frowning slightly.

Sana was going to answer her seriously, when she thought back to what she had just said. "Did you just call me annoying?"

"I did?" Tzuyu wondered out loud, furrowing her eyebrows. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."

There was beat of silence before Sana spoke again.

"Can I ask you something?"

Tzuyu her lips, curious to what Sana had to ask her.

"Sure."

"Why did you do it?"

Both Sana and Tzuyu stopped their actions for a while, deep in thought.

"I guess I just wanted you to know how I felt whenever I had to drop what I was doing to come and open the door for you because you forgot your keys." Tzuyu mumbled under her breath, but she was sure Sana had heard her anyway.

Sana opened to say something, but nothing came out. So that's why.

"Once I had to leave in the mid of a class because you were blowing up my phone," Tzuyu admitted laughing amusedly at the memory.

Tzuyu swore that if there was a class she would never get tired of that was Business Strategy; she just found it so interesting that every time she learned something new about it, she felt herself getting more and more excited.

It was her favourite class and she was always listening carefully to what her teacher was saying to make sure she wouldn't miss even the slightest of details.

However, that day she found herself scoffing when she heard her phone vibrating inside her bag, only to find out that she had received ten messages from her roommate, Sana, in the span of five minutes.

She sighed heavily; the two had been sharing a room for only two months yet the girl was already getting on her nerves with all the times she forgot her keys at home.

This time it was no different.

Apparently, she needed to study for an exam, but she didn't have her keys and couldn't get her book.

Sana texted her that she was desperate and really needed her; Tzuyu only rolled her eyes as it was the fifth time she had gotten a similar text from her that month.

Nevertheless, as the twentieth text arrived, Tzuyu slowly got up from her seat with a reluctant face, knowing she was going to regret this as soon as she stepped foot out of the classroom.

Before leaving, she asked Dahyun if she could borrow her notes later and only when the girl nodded her head, Tzuyu left the classroom and started going towards her dorm to help Sana.

"Why are you laughing?" Sana asked her in disbelief, raising her eyebrows. "Shouldn't you be mad because I made you miss your class?"

Tzuyu shook her head, relaxing against the door. "I was back then, but now it's just funny. Remember that time you called me three times because you needed to go to the bathroom but you didn't have your keys?"

The memory made the both of them erupt in a fit of laughters. "God that was so embarrassing for me!"

"And you think it wasn't for me? Plus, I was on a date when that happened." Tzuyu remembered, while smiling happily.

"You were on a date?! I didn't know, I'm so sorry!"

Tzuyu found it cute how regretful Sana sounded and couldn't stop a grin from forming on her lips.

"It was just a date, don't worry too much about it. Plus, you calling me because you had to use the bathroom was the most entertaining thing ever." Tzuyu affirmed and they started laughing again.

"What would you like to order?" a soft voice made Tzuyu look up from the menu and she blushed when her eyes met Elkie's tender ones.

Tzuyu wasn't one for relationships; she hardly went on dates and if she did, she never ended up going on a second one.

However, that changed when she met Elkie.

The girl was extremely sweet and there was something about her that made Tzuyu's heart flutter whenever she would look at her.

Elkie was the first person that got her stuttering because she was too nervous.

And she was the first person Tzuyu agreed to go on a second date with.

Actually, they were now on their third date and Tzuyu felt like the luckiest girl in the world even if the two had yet to take things on the next level.

Just as they were walking to the cafeteria they were currently at, Tzuyu wondered whether she should hold Elkie's hand or not, but ended up deciding against it as the two weren't so close.

She opened to answer, but closed it right back when her phone started ringing loudly.

"I'm so sorry," Tzuyu babbled before turning off her ringtone. She proceeded to read her messages and sighed when she saw it was Sana that once again had forgot her keys and was locked outside their room.

"Is everything okay?" Elkie asked her, genuinely worried and that made Tzuyu's heart skip a beat at how caring the girl was.

She nodded, but once again, when she tried to talk, her phone started vibrating and she saw Sana's name flash on her phone screen.

She rejected the call, but Sana called her again. She sighed and she was about to turn off her phone as her roommate's flashed on her screen for the third time when Elkie spoke to her.

"You can answer it if you need to," Elkie told her with a smile and Tzuyu mouthed a "thank you" while she picked up the call.

"Tzuyu I need you to come here now!" Sana was screaming and Tzuyu had to shush her before everyone in the cafeteria could hear her.

"Don't scream, please," she said, but Sana didn't seem to listen to her.

"Please, I really need to get in our room this time! I swear it won't happen again but can you please come open the door for me?" Sana's words were rushed and Tzuyu had a hard time keeping up with her, but nonetheless she understood what she meant.

The thing is, she really didn't want to got there this time.

Not if it meant she had to leave her date with Elkie.

After all, her dorm was thirty minutes away and it would take her more than a hour to get there and go back to the cafeteria.

She couldn't make Elkie wait that long.

"I really can't Sana, I'm sorry," she tried to explain her roommate, but she turned out to be more stubborn than Tzuyu had thought.

"No, you don't understand; I really need to get in," Sana insisted one more time. "Look, I'll tell you the truth okay?"

Tzuyu tried to tell her that she didn't need to and that either way she couldn't make it back to their dorm that day, but Sana did not let her speak.

"I need to go to the bathroom! Yes, I'm so embarrassed right now and I can't believe I just told you this but it's a life or death situation, please come save me!"

Tzuyu wanted to let Sana know that it was not a life or death situation, but in the six months she had been sharing a room with her, she had understood Sana was quite the drama queen.

"I really have no choice, uh?" she said to herself, while Sana kept talking about how much she needed her.

"Alright, I'll come," Tzuyu muttered in the end, giving in to Sana's pleading. "Just wait for me, okay?"

Before Sana could answer, Tzuyu hanged up, looking up at Elkie apologetically.

"It's okay," Elkie told her, still grinning. "Don't worry about me."

Tzuyu was thankful that Elkie was so understanding.

On her way home, she couldn't help but think back to her conversation with Sana.

Did she really call her because she had to use the bathroom and she was locked out?

How shameless could one be?

When their laughters quieted down, Tzuyu spoke again.

"But on a serious note, I'm really sorry for making you go through all of that. I should have confronted you about it instead of being petty and acting like I did." Tzuyu admitted, and Sana couldn't help but notice that she sounded genuinely sorry.

She was being sincere and Sana felt like it was only fair if she apologised as well.

"I'm also sorry; because of a stupid habit of mines, you had to come back every time to open the door for me. I've never apologised for it and that wasn't fair to you."

They were both smiling now.

"I guess we're both at fault here," Sana stated and Tzuyu nodded her head.

"We are," the younger one agreed with her. "And you're right, forgetting your keys is indeed a stupid habit of yours. Please, get rid of it."

Sana rolled her eyes, before ending up laughing again.

She couldn't deny the truth, could she?

"You're right; I really should get rid of it," Sana said, smacking her lips together and thinking hardly. "But how can I do that?"

"That's easy," Tzuyu declared from the other side of the door and Sana's ears perked up while she waited for Tzuyu to explain herself, hoping she would finally find a way to solve her problem.

"Uh? What are you talking about?" she asked her confusedly, wondering what solution she could have come up with.

However, she got no answer.

Or at least, she didn't get the answer she was expecting.

Instead, all of a sudden, Sana felt the handle move, looking up to see what was happening while the door suddenly opened and she found herself falling back on the ground, hitting her head.

When she opened her eyes again, she could feel a headache incoming and she saw Tzuyu standing over her, giggling amusedly.

"Like this!" she exclaimed cheerfully and Sana was too confused to react to what she had just said.

"Come on," Tzuyu stretched her arm out and gestured to Sana to take her hand so that she could help her stand up. "You look dumb right now."

Sana's scoffed as she accepted Tzuyu's hand and let the girl help her up on her feet.

She looked between Tzuyu and the door with a confused expression. "How did you...?"

"Just found the solution to all our problems," Tzuyu grinned widely and Sana swore she had never seen the girl look so happy. "Come in and I'll tell you."

Sana still felt lost, but she followed Tzuyu inside their room and closed the door behind.

She sat next to Tzuyu on her bed, and only then she noticed the pair of keys in her hands.

"Where did you get that?" Sana asked in bewilderment.

She looked at her nightstand to make sure Tzuyu's keys were still there. Did she imagine them before?

When she saw they were still there, she turned to Tzuyu with a questioning look.

Her roommate shook her head at how funny she looked in that moment and then proceeded to explain what had really happened.

"Some days ago I was passing by the secretary and I saw a girl retrieving a key; I don't know why but that made me think of you and how you always forget yours so I talked to secretary and made up that I lost mine so she gave me a spare one," Tzuyu was talking slowly and Sana was listening attentively to every word she said as things slowly started to make sense.

"I thought I'd give it you so that you'd always keep it in your bag. This way, even if you forget your keys, you can use the other ones," Tzuyu stopped for a minute, looking apologetically at Sana. "But then I kind of forgot about it and never gave them to you."

Sana giggled as Tzuyu was scratching the back of her neck, while she tried to cover the blush on her cheeks with her hair; the older girl found it extremely cute.

"So did you remember about it only now? Is that why you suddenly opened the door?"

Tzuyu bit her lip, avoiding looking at Sana.

"I actually remembered I had them the second time you made me sit down. I heard something jingling in my bag and I opened it, finding the keys."

Sana widened her eyes and gasped at her revelation. "But why did you wait so long to open the door then?"

This time, Tzuyu didn't have the time to hide away from Sana before blushing; her whole face seemed to be on fire and the older girl wondered what was happening and why was Tzuyu so flustered all of a sudden.

"Uhm, this is kind of embarrassing," she mumbled under her breath, but Sana insisted on her telling her anyway.

Tzuyu sighed, before looking Sana in the eyes.

For the first time, Sana noticed how intense her glance could be; but what really hit her was how honest her eyes were.

Why didn't she notice this before?

As if Tzuyu read her mind, she answered her.

"We've been roommate for more than a year now, but we rarely talk to each other," the younger girl admitted and Sana couldn't help but realise how right she was. "It felt nice talking to you, even if I was locked out and there was a door in between us."

Sana smiled and had to restrain from hugging Tzuyu close to her chest; she just looked so adorable at the moment.

"I guess we've never really talked like this," Sana thought out loud. "Why didn't we?"

Tzuyu shrugged her shoulders. "I guess I was too busy trying to annoy you to take my revenge."

She sounded so sorry and her voice was so low, it made Sana smile softly at her and reach for her hand to squeeze it lightly.

"Well, now you don't have to do that anymore," Sana exclaimed, getting up and snatching the spare keys from Tzuyu's hands. "I promise I'll try not to forget this pair at home."

"It's fine," Tzuyu said, looking up at Sana and smiling at her. "Even if you forget them, I wouldn't mind coming home to open the door for you."

Sana turned to look at Tzuyu from where she was standing next to her desk with glistening eyes and a radiant smile.

"And I wouldn't mind having you make fun of me for that," Sana admitted to her own surprise, fiddling with her new pair of keys.

Tzuyu shook her head; it was weird, she thought, how she couldn't stop smiling all of a sudden. "I won't make fun of you, though."

Her words seemed to entertain Sana so much that the girl started laughing loudly, making Tzuyu jump in surprise on her bed.

"Please," Sana said with a playful smile. "Don't ruin the moment by lying like that, and right into my face."

Tzuyu tried to contradict her, but Sana raised an eyebrow at her and the girl couldn't help but face the truth.

"Alright, I can't not mock you for forgetting your keys, especially if you forget both of them, but I swear I won't go overboard with the teasing!" Tzuyu exclaimed in all honesty and Sana sat back next to her to ruffle her hair.

"That's my girl!" she declared, smiling contently. "But make me wait outside for more then ten minutes again and it's on sight, Chou."

"You don't sound intimidating at all," Tzuyu voiced her thoughts and Sana brought a hand to her chest, gasping in fake disbelief. "But I promise I won't!" She added, before Sana could hit her arm.

Both girls looked at each other; it was the first time they spent time together like that and neither of the two would have thought they'd enjoy the other's company so much. Perhaps, it was time for a new start and they were glad they had been able to let go of their past mistakes.

They were hopeful that their future as roommates was going to bring them new pleasurable memories that they would treasure for the rest of their lives.

And they weren't wrong.
