to the girl who chases after sunsets: prologue

“Hey,” Olivia softly called. “Why do you love sunsets so much?”

Silence.

She glanced to the side, taking her eyes off the subtle fiery emblem that was about to dip below the horizon. Her brows furrowed as she grew impatient waiting for a response.

Another second of silence.

Olivia noticed a smile at the corner of the girl’s lips and fingers suddenly entwined with one another. Even after these years she still felt rather foreign whenever someone held her hands. Olivia didn’t mind, though.

“Because,” the other girl said, breaking the comfortable silence. “it makes me feel something.”

“Such as?”

She giggles softly. “I’m not sure I can explain it in words. But,” the girl tugged Olivia’s hand and swung it playfully. “whatever those feelings are – whether it’s good or bad, sunsets remind me that we can always start over the next morning.”

Another silence.

“What about you?”

Olivia raised her brows. There wasn’t any daylight left, the red-orange star was slowly but surely engulfed by the night sky by the second.

“I’m not sure I like it.”

“Why so?”

“Because it reminds me nothing lasts forever.”

Silence, again.

Then came darkness.
