April 11

7 years before

The wind softly brushed through her caramel-colored hair, her smile soft as she hummed a light, melodious tune. She swung her small feet back and forth-- slightly touching the sandy floor-- as she was situated primly on the archaic swings. Her hair followed her every movement and hypnotized the boy who was sitting next to her. He, too, slightly swung slowly on the swings, his attention solely on the girl. Watching, admiring, doting her features and her little quirks. When the two pre-teens locked eyes with each other, both of them grinned widely and giggled. It seemed as if they were never use to this kind of silence. As if whenever they were with each other, loud conversations and brief spirited fights accompanied the un-appreciated tranquility.

“Hey, what’s that song you were humming to?” the 13 year-old boy asked, breaking the silence, yet undisturbing the serenity.

The girl’s facial expression brightened and excitedly jumped off the swing set to face her childhood best friend. Slowly, she leaned forward to press her forehead against the boy’s and stared straight into his hazel eyes.

“It’s 달팽이(Snail) by Panic! Great song, isn’t it?”

A pink hue slowly appeared on his cheeks as he slowly nodded.

‘Her eyes,’ he thought, ‘they’re as sweet as hot chocolate’

Grinning from ear to ear, her dimples popped out as she twirled around like a toddler, her eyes bubbling from excitement. The boy just watched, embracing himself to hear God’s gift that was brought upon his best friend. The tiny girl took a deep breath in, her body shimmering from the setting sun and slowly started to sing.

“언젠가먼훗날에

One day, in the future 

저넓고거칠은세상끝바다로갈거라고

I'll go to the wide and rough ocean at the end of the world

아무도못봤지만

Nobody has seen it but

기억속어딘가들리는웃음소리따라서(actual lyrics: 파도instead of 웃음)

I'll follow the sound of laughter somewhere in my memory(actual lyrics: waves instead of laughter)"

Then, carefully eyeing the boy, she completed the song with her own lyrics.

"난동해를사랑해(actual lyrics:나는영원히갈래)

I love Donghae (actual lyrics: I'll go forever)”

The boy just chuckled from the declaration as the girl cheekily smiled whilst she swayed her body back and forth, her fingers twirling her hair from embarrassment. Donghae jumped out of the swings and walked over to where she was. Before the girl could notice that he had already left his previous position, he grabbed her hand to pull her body close to his.

In her ear, he quietly whispered, “나도 태연이 사랑해…[I love you (Taeyeon) too…]”.

The girl smiled from the sweet, loving words as she blushed, but it vanished when he continued his statement.

“…나의 제일 소중한 친구이니까(…since you are my most precious friend)”

Her genuine smile disappeared, a doleful expression replacing it.

‘Of course, as a friend…’

She wrapped her arms around the boy and tip toed to press her soft lips against his ear.

"알아... 내친구(I know... my friend)"
