it was always you

i'll always choose you

kang hyewon was in high school, she had great friends, a good reputation and her grades were doing just fine. everything was going well until she realised she fell in love with her bestfriend, kim minjoo.

.

"hyewonnie!" the voice hyewon always loved hearing called out to her. hyewon turned around and saw minjoo running towards her with an adorable smile on her face. the sight itself had made her heart flutter and her lips tug up into a large grin.

hyewon stops walking and waits for minjoo to catch up, minjoo launches herself on hyewon. the two laugh as hyewon buries herself into minjoo's embrace.

they were like two peas in a pod, always together and protecting each other from any harm. they were the perfect pair in everyone's eyes. hyewon was in love with her bestfriend, she only had eyes for her. everyone could see how hyewon's smile would widen and how her eyes become all sparkly whenever minjoo appeared. it was obvious that hyewon's heart belonged to minjoo.

"hyewonnie, do you have a date for the upcoming dance?" minjoo asks while she links her arm with hyewon.

"a few people asked me but i'm thinking of asking someone else." hyewon answered, she was going to smoothly ask minjoo out to the dance.

"oh same! i'm also thinking of asking someone." minjoo says, she expected hyewon to already have a date.

"who'd you wanna ask anyway?" minjoo asked, it was the perfect moment to pop the question. but hyewon didn't have the courage to speak, instead she cowardly covers up.

"it's a secret!" hyewon playfully smiles as she puts her finger on her lips.

minjoo whines which made hyewon giggle.

"don't sulk, i'll tell you when i finally have the courage to ask her." minjoo nods as they continue to walk to school.

"who do you want to ask?" hyewon asks curiously.

"well, it's not really that i want to ask. i'm kinda waiting for her to ask me." minjoo sheepishly scratches her nape, she felt embarassed.

hyewon was surprised and also hopeful.

is it me?

"w-who is it?" hyewon stuttered slightly from the possibility that minjoo was waiting for her to ask.

"ahn yujin."

in a second, hyewon's hopes were shattered.

"oh." it was all hyewon could quietly utter out, disappointment was obviously in her tone. hyewon knew about minjoo's crush on the rebellious ahn yujin, hyewon would always try to be supportive. urging minjoo to confess and helping minjoo plan ways to carry out the confession. it was foolish that hyewon would help her own crush to confess her feelings but it didn't matter. she was hurt and heartbroken but no matter what hyewon wanted minjoo to be happy because that was all that matters to hyewon. hyewon couldn't ignore the awestruck expression on minjoo's face whenever they would watch yujin play basketball.

she saw how minjoo would only show it to yujin, it was something she couldn't do. hyewon couldn't make minjoo fall in love with her.

"what's wrong with yujin?"

hyewon immediately snaps out of her daze,

"no! it's nothing. i was just surprised." hyewon shows a smile to show that everything was fine.

"i think you should ask yujin before someone else becomes her date." hyewon encourages minjoo. her heart aches as she watches minjoo ponder.

"i don't know. what if she rejects me?"

"how could she reject you? the kim minjoo asked her, how could yujin say no?"

minjoo chuckles, feeling more confident now.

"i'll think about it."

the conversation ends as they walk into the school. students were already hustling and bustling, most of them talking about the dance. hyewon could see a tiny figure walking towards them. the figure came closer, it was nako. she had sparkly awestruck eyes and a goofy grin plastered on her face. hyewon and minjoo couldn't help but smile, nako looked adorable.

"wonyoung asked me to the dance!" the tiny girl exclaimed, she was visibly excited. hyewon couldn't help but coo and pat nako's head.

"that's great nako ya." hyewon smuggles nako into a hug, squishing her cheeks with nako's. minjoo watched the two with an endearing smile, the two looked so cute minjoo snapped a photo.

while nako and hyewon were hugging, the school bell rang. nako bid the two goodbye before trudging off to her class.

"imagine wonyoung the giant slow dancing with the small nako. that'd probably be the cutest scene i can ever imagine." minjoo smiles as she imagines the sight. hyewon chuckles, it would indeed be such an adorable scene to witness. the two would have large grins on their faces, cheeks tinted with pink from shyness and sparkly awestruck eyes while they dance together. just imagining it makes hyewon heart giddy.

"c'mon we can't be late for class." minjoo takes hyewon's hand as they rush to class. the small action had made hyewon's heart skip a beat. minjoo's warm soft hand held on to hers as they walk to class. it felt right, it felt just like home, comfortable and warm.

class went by like a breeze, hyewon could barely pay attention because she was busy stealing glances at minjoo who sat next to her. the bell rang again, it was finally lunch time. hyewon quickly packed up, she was excited that she could finally eat. the hallways were busy as usual, minjoo was walking beside hyewon and chatting about some nonsense. an arm grabbed on minjoo's arm, startling her. it was none other than ahn yujin.

they were in the middle of the busy hallway, the crowd started to quiet down as the watch the scene unfold.

"minjoo, i want to ask you something." yujin kept her other hand hidden behind her back.

"w-what is it?" minjoo could feel her heart rate increasing, she felt nervous.

"would you like to go to the dance with me?" yujin takes out the bouquet of flowers hidden behind her back, yujin had a charming smile on her face. minjoo was surprised and charmed from yujin's proposal.

"of course." minjoo accepts the bouquet of flowers with a cheerful smile. the students surrounding them clap as they watch the popular basketball player ahn yujin ask the princess kim minjoo out to the dance.

hyewon stands by the side awkwardly, feeling broken. she bites her lips as an attempt to stop the tears falling. she watches the two, they look so happy. she felt out of place, she felt like a weirdo invading the privacy of a perfect couple. they looked so very special, she was just a creep.

as yujin walks away, the crowd subsides. minjoo walks towards hyewon with the biggest smile on her face. minjoo was hyewon's ray of sunshine but this time she felt heartbroken watching minjoo walk towards her.

"hyewonnie i'm just so happy!" minjoo squeals as she holds the bouquet of flowers close to her chest. the tears hyewon tried to hold finally fell.

hyewon started crying, minjoo's expression changed immediately. she was worried.

"i'm fine minjoo, i'm just so happy. i told you yujin would go with you." hyewon tries to smile through the pain, she kept trying to keep her smile on as she cries.

before minjoo said a thing, hyewon cut her off.

"i'm sorry, i got a text from my mom. there's something up. i need to go now, i'll see you tomorrow." hyewon waves goodbye as she runs towards the exit. minjoo only watched hyewon leave, she was confused but decided to let hyewon be.

hyewon ran home as fast as she could, she wipes away the tears blinding her vision but fresh ones continue to form.

shouldn't i be used to this?

hyewon asks herself, she didn't even know why she was so hurt. she was supposed to be used to the pain by now. she couldn't understand herself, she couldn't understand anything.

hyewon buries herself in her sheets, she wanted to stay there forever. she let her tears flow until there was no more. she looked at herself in the mirror, her eyes red and puffy and her hair messier than a nest.

hyewon wished she had the courage to ask minjoo before yujin. she could have been minjoo's date if she just didn't chicken out this morning. regret eats her up as she punches her pillows to relieve her frustration and hatred towards herself.

.

for the days following to the dance, hyewon didn't show up. she couldn't face minjoo, she knew if she did she'd break down right in front of her. minjoo dailed hyewon's number countless times, she even went over to hyewon's house. minjoo was afraid something happened to hyewon. minjoo finally felt somewhat relieved when she recieved a text from hyewon.

hyewonnie: i'm sorry i haven't been in school! had a family emergency with my grandparents, so don't worry!

hyewon sent the message, she felt guilty for worrying minjoo like that but she couldn't bring herself to go to school.

minnie ♡: i hope everything's okay! take care

hyewon sighs as she puts her phone away, burying herself in her pillow again. hyewon felt like she met her soulmate when she met minjoo, but minjoo didn't.

.

it was the day of the dance. hyewon stares at her clock comtemplating if she should go to the dance but she didn't even have a date. hyewon's mother comes in her room with a beautiful black dress in her hands. hyewon denies the dress at first but after her mother's encouragement. she found herself in the black dress, her mother driving her to the school.

hyewon walked in, it was filled with couples everywhere. she saw nako and wonyoung dancing, it was so adorable it put a smile on her face. her smile dropped the moment she saw yujin and minjoo together in the center. they looked perfect, yujin looked charming in her black tuxedo and minjoo looked stunning in her white dress.

hyewon stood there watching, minjoo looked like an angel. she looked so light dancing there she could float like a feather. hyewon couldn't withstand the sight of minjoo in the arms of someone else and left. hyewon walked away, tears threatening to fall. she felt like a coward for walking away.

.

minjoo saw hyewon, she saw her back turned towards her and yujin. minjoo stares at hyewon's back as she walks away, thinking that hyewon was looking for her date.

"are you okay?" yujin asks, concerned about her date. minjoo seemed dazed and not herself.

"what?" minjoo didn't catch what yujin said.

yujin looks over at what minjoo was looking at, it was kang hyewon.

"go." yujin said with a smile.

"what?" minjoo looked at yujin confused,

"go after her." yujin lets go of minjoo's waist and takes a step back. minjoo nods before running to catch up.

.

"hyewon!"

It's the voice hyewon fell in love with, it's kim minjoo's voice. but thinking it was just her imagination she kept walking.

it was until minjoo grabbed hyewon's arm, she stopped walking. hyewon faces minjoo for the first time in days, she looked beautiful as always. minjoo wraps her arms around hyewon's waist and hugs her tightly.

"it was always you." minjoo tightens her grip as she buries herself in hyewon's shoulder.

"w-what?" hyewon didn't understand.

"it was you who was always there, it was you who went through thick and thin with me. it's you who i fell in love with." minjoo loosens her grip to see hyewon's reaction.

instead of using words, hyewon leans in to capture a quick kiss.

"i'll always choose you, kim minjoo. no matter what, i'd choose you." a stray tear rolls down hyewon's pale cheek,

minjoo wipes it away, a wide smile plastered on her face.

kim minjoo realised many things while hyewon was away and one of them was that she was in love without even knowing it.
