When Donghae and Hyukjae first separate, it’s meant to be temporary. They just need some time apart to work through things, right? Donghae misses Hyukjae terribly, and yet every time they meet or talk to each other, it turns into a fight.

‘I hate that you’re always with that guy,’ Hyukjae says, meaning Siwon. ‘I don’t trust him!’

‘It doesn’t matter if he’s trustworthy or not,’ Donghae snaps. ‘You should trust me.’

If they’re not arguing about Siwon or Donghae’s new social life, they are fighting about Hyukjae’s working hours, their relationship, or just anything.

‘What relationship?’ Hyukjae snaps. ‘I’m so tired of fighting with you, Donghae. And you wonder why I stay at work so long?’

He slams the door as he leaves and Donghae throws the coffee cup he’s holding at the closed door, the broken pieces scattering across the floor. Then, because he can’t bear to sleep in their bed alone, he asks Soojin to come pick him up.

It’s Siwon’s white Lamborghini which pulls up to the kerb.

‘Soojin’s away for the weekend,’ Siwon says, leaning across to open the door for Donghae. ‘I thought we could hang out!’

Donghae settles into the seat and Siwon pats his leg sympathetically.

‘Relationships, huh?’ he says. His hand is warm and heavy on Donghae’s thigh.

Hyukjae, who is sitting on the front steps of the neighbouring building to cool down, sees them drive off.

He goes back upstairs and packs his bags.

Kyuhyun comes to help Donghae empty the apartment.

‘Do you want this?’ he asks, holding up a ridiculously expensive black and gold Versace shirt Hyukjae had given Donghae. Hyukjae has a matching white one and they used to joke they looked like idols while wearing them.

‘Throw it away,’ Donghae says shortly. Kyuhyun drops it into the bin. There are a lot of clothes already there.

‘Did you ever buy anything?’ Kyuhyun complains. ‘There’s going to be nothing left at this rate.’

Donghae opens the bedside drawer and sees the little box that used to contain cufflinks but now contains his and Hyukjae’s friendship bracelets.

He didn’t take them.

Donghae throws the little box into the bin with so much force it splits open. Kyuhyun flinches but doesn’t say anything. He’s always been useless when it comes to emotions. But when Donghae has left the room, he picks the damaged little box out of the trash and opens it curiously. He

Chapter 13: This is so perfect. Thank you so much for writing such a wonderful story.
Reading from chapter 1 until the epilogue, I feel like growing together with them.
I can't help but thinking back to how their relationship went downhill.
Hyukjae was being so busy and Donghae with no good income were 2 things that made their relationship sour at that time.
Donghae took his first photography gig for Siwon seemed like the moment where finally the thin ice broke.
However I think that separation moment was actually a moment for them to really grow.
In their separation, Donghae was somehow able to get more job thus no longer feel bad about himself being useless.
If Donghae hadn't taken the photography job at Tokyo, probably he wouldn't get more job offer and if he had stayed quietly with Hyukjae, I think it wouldn't be good for their relationship as well.
Hyukjae also learned that his happiest moment actually when both of them had no money in their first apartment, and so he learned that spending time together is so important.
I feel like both of them learn to meet halfway. I imagine both of them won't really chase for money now and will have balance in their work and life and I'm happy for it.
