Breaking Norms

Description

"You need to do this! It's the only way I know to help you save up the money you screwed! Don't you forget that the exam is in 2 weeks. Even if you work for 18 hours a day you wont be able to save that kind money in time." Eun yeong expected to have this conversation because it is the same situation her bestfriend have every 2 weeks before the final exam of the semester.

"So, you want those artsy erts to examine every part of my body and use art as an excuse for it?" anger and desperation filled up the tone of Minji's voice. She got away with those problems for two years because she used to date someone who doesn't have problem with money. But that was before, they separated shortly after the semester started and no one will help fill in the missing digits needed for her tuition.

"If only you listened to me then you will not be in this situation. Look, my friend said there will just be a few artists going and most of them are girls. I talked to her and she said she wont let anything bad happen to you there. If this $30 can help pay up for your tuition then take this!" she said jokingly to her friend because just like her she is also broke. They are just college students taking part time jobs and living on their own.

Minji's carefree and party – till- you- drop life style made her $3000 short of her tuition fee which her father already gave before the semester started. Eun yeong's friend who is an artist needs a model for some art students to draw..... She suddenly thought of Minji since she is not that not conservative and traditional anyway, both of them actually. Earning $1500 will make it possible for Minji to have the money she needs because she has saved some and expects salary from her part time job before the week ends.

"I still have until Friday to think about it, right? Let me talk to my loaded ex first and hopefully we can come up with a solution."

"You still remember what she said the night you broke up with you right? You should've lost all the love you have when you heard that." Unfortunately Eun yeong had witnessed their fights because they used to be housemates. Her family recently moved nearer to her university so now she is back with them and Minji is left on her own paying the whole rent and bills.

"I didn't say I still love her. I just want to ask help from her and that's it. I'll be like a loan which I probably don't have to pay." Minji can be over confident at times.

For most people highschool days are the best, but not for Minji. The best days of her school life is when she moved to a new city a little further from her hometown and away from her family. Freedom is the main reason why most students want to be away. Alcohol? Smoking? Drugs? Partying? No, that's not the kind of freedom she is longing to have. She just wants to show the side of her that has been kept a secret for a long time, it just happened that she adopted excessive partying in the process. You can give the parents of the year award to them because they will definitely support her in everything she wants except for one, her relationships with girls. She had it multiple times in the past and she knows it is what she wants. She went through all the stages that any one or professional can think of but it all end up to someone same as her. Being an only daughter has put pressure not to disappoint her parents even if it means she has to marry a man in the future. But that is still in the future and she might as make the most out of her freedom and prolong it as much as she can.

The morning after........

Minji is infront of one the classiest apartment buildings in Seoul. You can tell from its wall to ceiling intricate designs that living inside this high-end building will cost someone to pay some serious rent. She has been here numerous time but now jitters are taking over her like it is her first time. She went inside the elevator, her hand is shaking as she pressed the number 8 button. Apartment number 806 that's where she is heading. Few months ago, she has free access to this apartment but now here she is, anxiously waiting for guts to fill her body so she can finally press the doorbell button. After a few minutes of debating she decided to close her eyes, take one deep breath and press the button.

Few seconds of waiting and the door was opened. She was welcomed with a warm smile by a beautiful, tall girl with a very noticeable fit and toned body. "Come in" she said happily.

Minji's POV

I cant help but be angry with myself right now I shouldnt be in here, I should hate her for what she said the day we broke up. I cant disappoint my parents and I for sure wont extend my grueling college life which will happen if I don't pay my tuition fee.

"So, how much money do you need?"

My heart literally skipped a beat upon hearing it from Ga Hee. I cant feel any arrogance nor sarcasm in the way she spoke. It sounded so casual like how someone would ask for your name.

"$1500. I saved a few and the rest after I get paid by the weekend." I replied with embarrassment. Ofcourse she knows this, she has helped me with this everytime the final exam will come.

"Which means $1500 is not the only the amount you need. Let's make this short and sweet."

"$3000. That's the amount that I need to pay. I will fail this semester if I don't take my finals. I just need one more year to finish college and I don't want to make it longer." Damn I hate it when I sounded like im almost pleading!

"Ok, no problem. You'll get it tomorrow."

So I guess my charm is still working with her. Ofcourse, I have to tell that I will pay it back like every decent person should do, she doesn't let me pay anyway.

"Give me some time and I'll pay it back." I said

"OK, I will have you pay it back someday" She smiled sweetly but I rather got scared and confused as to what that means but the important thing is that I got the money.

Days passed by and I forgot to tell Eun yeong that I don't need to pose for those y artists until I received her message about it. She asked me to meet her outside my apartment building. That brat really has to let me meet two of the artists who were supposed to paint me . One is a middle-aged man maybe in his forties. He is soft spoken and talks a lot about art which im not really interested but im stuck there so I guess I have to act as if I was. If they only knew what I call them in my head..haha. The other one is rather quiet. She is a bit shorter than me and thin looking. She said her age is 32 and not yet married. I can tell she doesnt give fashion much importance. She is just wearing a sweater shirt with just some shirt inside. Her pants are kinda baggy for height and paired it with a brown boots tainted with what I suppose is paint. By the way she looks, I guess artists don't usually get a lot until their artworks are famous. All I can here are "Blah Blah's" in my head because I cant relate with their talk and I cant be any happier when it was finally over. I said sorry that I cant do it and the girl smiled warmly and said " It's okay. You shouldn't force yourself to the things that you dont want to do." Then we part ways and both of my problems have come to an end. I will study for the finals and nothing more to worry about.

3rd person POV

"Sorry Ma'am I cant sell you this if you cant show me an ID."

" I usually buy my cigarette here, I just forgot my ID im 23 for god's sake" Minji said angrily. This girl has no temper, a tough one if she was to be described. But the cashier is strict as she can be and didn't let her get off the hook this time. "Next, please."

"And give me one pack of that please."

"Cigarette?" asked the cashier

"Yes"

Minji stopped cursing the cashier in her mind when she felt a finger poking her back. "Here" the girl smiled warmly. She stopped for a moment to think where she met that girl. Oh yes, she girl with tastless fashion whom she met few days ago. Minji got curious as to how she still remembers her when their last conversation didn't even last for 10 minutes.

"Oh, it's you. Thank you" she cant contain her happiness of having a pack of cigarette.

"She's trying to show off. I don't look very young at all." She continued her rant while they both puff a stick each. The girl just smiled and didn't say a word.

"Are you from this area?" she continued. Hoping the girl will speak atleast a sentence with five words.

"I visited a friend who lives near here." Said a very calm and cold voice.

"But do you live here?" Minji replied

"Not here. A bit further." You can tell that conversation is not her thing. It is just question and answer for her.

"OK. Then give me your number Unnie. I want to buy you a drink because you bought me this. Soju and chicken feet, how does that sound?"

She just laughed and said "Soju and chicken feet it is" then she gave her number.

"Great! I have to go now, my friends are waiting for me."

The girl left leaving Sejin amazed by her outgoing behavior. She talked liked they have met a thousand times before. She might have not said too much but lots of thoughts are going in her mind while they were talking. "Im going to meet that girl again" she promised.
