Same World Different People

Sana, Mina and Jihyo are housemates. They have been staying together in an upscale apartment for 2 years. The apartment was a present for Sana by her parents who is still staying in Japan and she eventually rented out 2 of the rooms to Mina and Jihyo. It is considered an upscale apartment because its located in the heart of Seoul city. The apartment consists of 3 bedrooms that comes with its own toilet. The open layout with the huge island kitchen makes the apartment look even more gorgeous.

Mina was the first to move in. She initially was considering getting an apartment in the same building for herself but realized it was too big. Although money wasn’t the issue for her, she doesn’t want to feel lonely. Thankfully, Sana who was in the same school as her, offered a rental room.

Jihyo initially wanted to stay in a hostel. However, when she got to know Sana through her boyfriend’s friend, she ended up renting the last room in Sana’s apartment. Sana is dating Hanbin the famous cold-hearted prince of JYG University. Hanbin happens to be best friends with Jinhwan who is dating the vocal queen, Jihyo. While Sana is the butterfly queen who is the friendliest, Jihyo who is the vocal queen known for her soulful voice, Mina on the other hand is known as the beautiful nerd. The brainy girl with zero social skills. She is single and her time consist of video games, ballet and studying. Honestly, she doesn’t even need the scholarship but she feels like the scholarship is so important to her.

Let’s not forget the Mr Player who happens to be Hanbin’s cousin Jiwon aka Bobby. He is technically not the most good looking but he is the most charming guy you would ever meet. He doesn’t believe in a romantic relationship with a woman yet he would never give up on .

The Dynamics of All the Relationship

Mina was slowly making her way to the kitchen afraid she will wake everyone up. She saw Bobby shirtless on the sofa and contemplated if she should make breakfast or not. Her empty tummy is more important than her shyness at the moment. She opens the fridge and was thankful for the fully stocked fridge. She took out a tray of eggs, bacon, sausages and some greens. She slowly baked the bacon, sausages and tomatoes. She quickly makes a vinaigrette and toss it with the greens. Finally, she poached the eggs carefully.

In all seriousness of Mina making breakfast, Bobby couldn’t help but took a peek at the shy girl who never fails to make great breakfast. He slowly rises from the sofa and walk towards the kitchen island. Mina had noticed the guy moving and tried her best to concentrate on poaching the eggs. Bobby stood behind her and was just about to surprise her when she as always surprised him first.

MN: Yes Bobby…. Good morning…

BB: Good morning love… (He responded reluctantly.) How come you always know I am behind you? I treaded my steps carefully. (He whines before going to the fridge an pulling out a bottle of cold ice water.)

MN: Jiwon… when would you learn that I am always aware of you? And can you please use a cup instead of chugging it down your throat?

BB: It’s just water?

MN: Well, we didn’t know where your mouth has been?

BB: Seriously, you know? It was at a special place yesterday night. (He smirked before winking at her.)

Mina hates it when his joking gets ual. She rolled her eyes.

MN: The food is ready. You could help yourself. (She said as a matter of fact but sounding irritated.)

BB: Where are you going? You haven’t had your food.

MN: Forget it… I have loss my appetite. (She said before storming off her to her room.)

Bobby could never understand Mina. He doesn’t understand why she is always easily annoyed with him. This just adds up to his curiosity. Mina quickly gets into the shower because she herself couldn’t understand the reason she gets affected by every single thing that Bobby does.

SN: What did you do again? (Sana eyes him.)

BB: Good morning sister….

BI: Seriously Won… what did you do?

BB: I did nothing! Maybe she is just PMS-ing? You know that thing that makes you girls moody every month.

SN: Can you for once not annoy her? (She begs him while taking a stack of plates.)

Sana looked at the food and felt touch that Mina never fails to think of others. Sana plated the food that Mina makes and realized that Mina has not had her breakfast.

SN: Why didn’t she eat? (Sana asked Bobby.)

BB: Well, she got moody before she could even eat.

Sana shook her head and quickly plated the food for Mina.

BB: Seriously, what’s the big deal?

SN: Mina has bad case of gastric. She has fainted a couple of times because she didn’t eat. She has an exam today. So, she needs to eat breakfast the very least. (Sana responded feeling annoyed and this time round, Hanbin got annoyed at Bobby too.)

BI: Won….

BB: Arraso… I will apologize later.

BI: Is Jay still asleep?

BB: They have a busy night you know.

SN: And how would you know that?

Bobby flashes a cheeky grin. Not long after that, Mina was ready to leave for school. She saw Bobby still having his breakfast.

SN: Minari, can you please eat something before your exam? You are still 2 hours early. And your hair is still wet.

MN: It’s okay. I don’t feel like eating.

BB: Come on Minari. I am sorry. I really didn’t mean anything by what I said.

MN: I don’t want to be late.

SN: Minari…. (Sana called out to her disappointingly.)

MN: Ara…. I will eat.

Sana smiles before giving Mina a kiss on her cheek. She quickly went back to her room with Hanbin trailing behind.

She sat around the island and Bobby passed her the fork and knife.

BB: How long is the paper today?

MN: 2hr… I hope I can finish the paper… (She sighs softly.)

BB: Why aren’t you feeling confident? You are Myoui Mina!

Mina smiles as she looks at his face.

BB: Can I shower in your toilet? Don’t want to disturb Sana and Bin…

Mina nodded.

MN: There are new towels in my last drawer. You could use one.

BB: Gomawo Minari. (He kisses her cheek before entering her room.)

It wasn’t the first kiss he gave her but her heart still stirs. She slowly ate her breakfast as she reminds herself that Bobby is not safe for her. As she washes the dishes, Bobby was ready.

BB: I’ll send you to school okay, Minari.

MN: You don’t have to.

BB: It’s okay Love.

Weeks turns to months and months turn to a year. Mina and Bobby still have a love hate relationship which only they understand. They battle on games. Fight over food and quarrel over different things. They cook together, grocery shop together, Netflix together. The only thing they don’t do together is club together or date each other. It’s like a big no-no.

Mina was deep in her sleep when Bobby enters her room semi drunk. He was calling her out like a baby.

BB: Minari…. Minari….

MN: You’re drunk…. Go sleep outside Jiwon.

BB: Andwe…. It’s cold. Can I sleep on your bed? Pleaseeeee…. (He begs her.)

MN: No… (She told him off and got off her bed.)

Mina was about to push him out of her room but he ended up hugging her. Like how it has been lately, she will share the bed with him. Half way through the night, he will actually wake up and check if Mina was beside him. They will end up sleeping in each other’s arms. When the sun finally shines on them, Mina would always wake up to his face. She loves to see Bobby’s sleeping face. He looks like a baby, happy and contented. So was her heart. She knew very well that Bobby and her just wouldn’t fit as a couple but she always wondered why she likes him. After much staring and playing with his hair, Mina slowly removes his hands from her waist. She slowly got off from the bed and went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

The moment she left the room, Bobby opens his eyes. He loves these short intimate moments he has with her. He knows, he would never be her ideal guy but spending time with her is enough for him to feel cared and looked after. He loves sleeping in her room. Her aromatherapy always gives him a good sleep. Her bedsheet is soft and her room is very cosy. He even has a towel in her room. Sadly, they are not in a relationship.

They were playing game in the living room when Sana and Hanbin left for a short holiday. Jihyo who was cooking lunch with Jinhwan couldn’t help but smiled at the bickering friends.

JHO: Guys… we’ll be back at Jay’s hometown tomorrow. Can you guys not end up murdering each other?

JY: I don’t want to get a call from the police because of the both of you. (Jinhwan jokes.)

MN: Don’t worry about that, I will be going to Japan tomorrow. Didn’t I tell you guys?

BB: You didn’t tell me! Who am I going to spend my time with?

MN: I am sure you have other ladies to keep you company. You know someone to dance or you know…

BB: Know what? (He grabs on to her waist as he questions her.)

MN: Mianhe… I was kidding. Just kidding.

JY: You guys should just date.

JHO: Agree!

MN: You know that it will never happen between us.

Mina just laughed it off and it kind of make Bobby a little upset.

Alone

Mina was preparing dinner when she realizes that Bobby barely said anything to her. As she puts the salmon in the oven, she brought 2 glasses of wine to the sofa. She handed one to Bobby.

MN: You ok?

BB: What do you think?

MN: Hey… what is wrong? Did I say something wrong?

BB: Nope… never mind.

Mina wasn’t sure why he was behaving this way. Every question she asked comes with only a nod or no answer at all.

MN: The fish will be done in less than 5 min. You can go ahead and have dinner first. (She stated clearly before making her way to her room and locking it. She doesn’t know why he is behaving that way but she clearly wasn’t in the mood to entertain his mood swings.)

Bobby kind of regret treating Mina that way. When the oven timer rang, he knocked on her door.

BB: Minari…the food is ready.

MN: You can eat it first. I have no appetite.

BB: I’m sorry. Can we just have dinner together?

Mina never responds to his calling.

Bobby hated every time they get into a fight. And tonight, was one of those night when he wouldn’t want to fight, so he took off and left the apartment. Mina sat on her bed wondering what is wrong with her. She also wondered what is in his head.

3 Days Later…

JHO: You should join us Minari…

SN: It’s just clubbing….

MN: I don’t think I am cut out for clubbing.

SN: Come on, I promise to help you doll up.

MN: Nah uh….

JHO: Pleaseeeee

SN: Anyway… Minari…. Did you quarrel with Bobby?

JHO: Speaking of that, Jay finds it funny that he creates excuses from hanging out here.

MN: We did but he was just childish about it.

SN: I really don’t get it… you two are like cats and dogs… (She whines….)

JHO: Anyway…. Minari lets go dancing tonight… I mean dancing in a club not ballet dancing… (She teases the shy girl.)

MN: Arraso… (She finally relented.)

Mina looks at the mirror. She looks different. The contact lenses and the way Jihyo does her hair is simple yet sultry making her feel a little shy. Jihyo chose for her a pair of black skinny jeans and paired it with a black off shoulder glittery top. Mina doesn’t have any heels and was thankful that Sana loaned her a pair of gold heels with a gold cross body purse.

She did feel a little out of place. The club was loud and noisy as she had expected and people were too close for comfort. Sana had to drag Mina to the dance floor. Honestly, Mina may have not clubbed before but the way her body sway to the music is very y that many guys couldn’t take their eyes of her. When the girls were back at the table, Hanbin and Jay joined their girlfriend. Mina looks around wondering if Bobby was her.

BI: Minari, you looking for Bobby?

MN: Nope… never said that.

JAY: He is somewhere here screwing someone… (He blurted things out which actually resulted in a pang of jealousy in Mina’s heart.)

SN: Like what’s new right?

Soon Bobby appeared shagged with the girl beside him. They looked like they just had . Mina put up a brave front. She smiles at the couple and chugged down her drinks. Bobby didn’t expect her there because he never thought Myoui Mina would ever step into a club.

As he slumps on the seat with the girl on his lap, he observes how y Mina was on the dance floor. He hated that the other guys around the dancefloor had their eyes on her. Somewhere deep in his heart, he was thankful that Mina didn’t entertain the guys who came close.

Hours passed by, Bobby was so drunken that he started making out with the girl he was with. Sana and Jihyo realizes that there was hurt in Mina’s eyes. However, no one dared to say anything for fear of hurting her dignity. One thing is for sure, Mina understands how different she is from Bobby and any hope for relationship has to be diminished or else she will end up hurting, and honestly it is not she has already had not.

Back at the apartment, Mina couldn’t understand how her roommates and their boyfriend could do this almost every week. Get drunk and have lots of is something she never understood. Sana and Hanbin was dead drunk, while Jihyo and Jay looks like that too except they couldn’t get their hands off each other.

Mina dries her hair as she decided to catch some Netflix. She only had 2 drinks so she was fine and weren’t affected. As she stared at the screen, she couldn’t believe that she had to bear looking at Bobby making out with another girl. When he kisses the girl’s cheeks, lips, shoulder and bosom, Mina felt a lot of pain. She never looks at them again that night and she could never look him in the eyes ever again.

She Left

It has been months since Mina joined them for clubbing and she vowed she won’t ever do it again. She has been offered a place at the Royal Academy of Ballet in New York and her brother just opened a design studio there too. She has been contemplating if she should leave Korea.

As always, Mina lately left very early. She wanted to avoid seeing Bobby who would randomly drop by for brunch or dinner. She has been eating out and rarely cook. She either come home early and pretended she sleeps in early or she will come home late when everyone is out.

However, she can’t hide forever. Everyone is gathered in the living room except for Mina who was out.

SN: It’s been long since we eat in.

JHO: Mina no longer cooks dinner at home…. We always called in food.

JAY: I haven’t seen Mina at home lately.

BB: Mina not at home? That’s a first. (He tried laughing it off.)

BI: I saw a guy sent her home a couple weeks back. Maybe she has a boyfriend now. That’s why she is staying out.

SN: I doubt so… she would have told me.

JHO: But Mina is very private… Maybe she really has a boyfriend.

SN: Yup, maybe she does but the reason she is busy lately is because she is preparing to move to New York. (Sana eventually break the news.)

JHO: Has it been confirmed? She didn’t mention anything other than she applied for the position. (Jihyo wondered.)

Suddenly Bobby’s glass of water hit the ground and broke into piece.

JAY: You okay bro? Don’t move, I’ll get the Dyson vacuum.

BI: What’s wrong Ji?

BB: Nothing man… suddenly I felt giddy.

Hanbin knew that his best friend is having a hard time processing what had he heard. Bobby lingered around wanting to talk to Mina but so far, she has not yet return. He was just about to leave when he heard the door unlock.

He ran to Mina’s room, dumps his jacket on her table before lying under the duvet. Mina was surprised to see him on her bed. It’s been quite a while since she last saw him what more talk to him. She wanted to chase him out but she couldn’t bear to do it. She took her towel and pyjamas before heading to the toilet for a shower. He smiled to himself feeling thankful he wasn’t chased out.

Mina thought for a while if she should get in bed with him beside her. She eventually relented. She climbed softly under the duvet and lay her head on her pillow facing the guy who at one minute could melt her but at another time could drive her nuts. As she stared at his face, she almost yelped when he wrapped his arms around her waist and snuggles his head close to hers. Mina tried convincing herself that he probably was just dreaming. But to Bobby, he enjoys having her in his arms but for some reason he would never admit to her that fact.

Even with his eyes closed, he wondered when should he ask her about New York? He decided to let it go and enjoy hugging her for tonight. As he was wondering in his head, he was surprised when Mina kisses him on his cheek. She then his hair and face. Then something Mina whispered stirred his heart. He was stun but since he was sleeping he could not say anything.

‘I wished you know how much I love you. But I know God has better plans for us. We are just too different.’

Many thoughts occupied his head, and by the time he falls asleep, it was already 4 am in the morning.

Truth be told, Mina knew he wasn’t sleeping. Mina do not understand why he pretended to be sleeping. When he held her close, she could feel his heart racing. She wondered if he even knew what his touch does to her. She finally decided to gamble by telling him the truth about his feelings. She just wanted to be honest about it and even if he rejected her, at least she knows she has opened her heart to him.

When she uttered those words, she thought he would wake up and curse at her. But he did nothing. Then the famous quote comes to mind, ‘the opposite of love is not hating but indifference’. Now she understood, she meant nothing to him thus the indifference. She did not even go to sleep. Around 4 am when she was very sure that Bobby has fall asleep, she slowly slipped out of his embrace and change. She left the house and ended up at a PC gaming centre. She stayed there until it was the afternoon before she eventually returns when Bobby has left.

She began packing her bags. There is much to bring but she has to clear the room because it would make things easier if Sana wanted to rent it out. She has to post some of her stuffs over to a family’s friend place who she would be staying with for the first month before moving to the place he company has gotten her. After throwing and posting things over to New York, she is left with a luggage and some clothes and toiletries. Although she has mentioned to Sana that she will be leaving, she has not told Sana that she would be leaving South Korea in 2 days. She wondered how Sana and Jihyo would react to it.

The night before she leaves, Mina decided to make roast chicken with seasonal vegetables. As she prepared the mash potato, Jihyo and Sana came out form their room. Mina plated the food for the girls. Sana misses Mina’s cooking. She hugs the girl so tight that Mina couldn’t help but laugh at her silliness. Jihyo on the other hand was very sensitive to changes in Mina.

JHO: Minari, what do you want to say to us?

SN: Say what? She made us dinner. That’s all that matters. (Sana exclaimed not understanding what Jihyo tried to say.)

JHO: Minari…

MN: Aigooo… I can never hide anything from Jihyo. Why are you so smart?

SN: So, you do have something to say.

MN: Uhuh… do you remember about me telling you that I will be moving to New York?

SN: Don’t tell me its next month?

JHO: Is it next week? (Jihyo asked as Sana shook her head not wanting to hear that.)

MN: It is actually tomorrow morning.

Sana dropped her cutleries before heading to room with her eyes filled with tears. Jihyo sat rooted on her chair.

JHO: Why do you tell us at the very last minute? (She sighs feeling disappointed.)

MN: I am not good with goodbyes. I just don’t know when is a good time to tell you girls.

JHO: I think you need to talk to Sana. She must be very upset.

Mina knocked on the door but Sana did not answer. Thankfully the door wasn’t locked and Mina stepped in the room and saw Sana lying on her bed crying.

MN: Mianhe Sana ya… Please don’t hate me.

SN: I would never hate you but I don’t understand why you kept it from us. Is this how friends treat each other?

MN: Mianhe… I thought goodbye will be too painful for us, thus I kept it on the low.

JHO: Have you finish packing?

MN: I did… You can actually find a new tenant soon.

SN: I don’t want a new tenant. I want you.

JHO: How long will you be in NY?

MN: A couple of years or at maybe 3 years.

SN: I will keep the room for you.

MN: It’s a waste. You should just rent it out to someone.

SN: Do you think our friendship is just about money?

MN: Mianhe….

JHO: I will miss you….

SN: Me too….

JHO: Can we send you to the airport at least?

MN: Of course, my loves…

She’s Gone

Bobby was lazing around in bed. He has been staying home since he heard Mina’s confession. He was ecstatic about her confession and wondered how to confess to her too. He smiles silly when he thinks about it. He was scrolling through Instagram when his world stop. Jihyo posted a photo of Mina and the girls at the airport captioned ‘All the best Minari. Conquer New York City! ‘

Bobby sat on his bed for a whole hour trying to figure out what happened. He couldn’t believe Mina left. He was angry that after the confession, she left just like that. She left him hanging just like that. He made no attempt to reach out to her. Why would he? He was consumed with anger. He wishes she would not leave him but she did.

Sometimes he got angry at himself because he understood that Mina and him are not in a relationship at all. However, he can’t deny the disappointment he felt. Days turn to months, months to years. At the same time, Bobby has changed. He stays at home or at Sana’s place most of the time. He does club with them but he has never touched another girl since Mina left. He has never slept with someone else too since then. He just doesn’t want another woman in his life.

He never asked about Mina at all but is always ears when Sana and Momo updates them about her. Once, Sana showed a picture that Mina sent. She was hugging one of her co dancers. Bobby felt hurt. He waited for her yet she is out there meeting people. He remembered getting drunk just because of that photo.

He is now a music producer in Jay’s entertainment company. His muse has and always been Mina. Jay knew his friend is missing Mina but what can he do. The two met at a wrong timing.

She’s Coming Home

Jihyo was plating the chicken while Bobby was hanging in the kitchen.

BB: Jihyo ah, did she call?

JHO: Who? (She asked him back knowing who he meant.)

BB: Minari… It’s been a while since I heard about her from you guys.

JHO: Well, we text each other on WhatsApp daily for your information. Sometimes, we skype with each other too. (Jihyo explains to him.)

BB: Did she say when she is coming back?

JAY: Why? Do you miss her? (Jay interrupts them as he reaches out for a peck from Jihyo.)

BB: Well, who doesn’t. I am sure everyone misses her. I have not seen her since like close to 4 years. You guys said she will be back in 3 but its already 4.

JAY: Babe… did she plan to stay in NYC forever? (Jay purposefully ask his girlfriend in order to test Bobby’s patience.)

JHO: Maybe…. Maybe not. I don’t know. (Jihyo smiles cynically at her boyfriend’s playfulness.)

BB: Didn’t you guys ask her?

JHO: Must we? She is a big girl Jiwon. Who knows if she wants to settle down there? All I know is that she better invites me to her wedding.

Jiwon felt hurt and he moves to the sofa sulking.

JHO: Babe, we are a little mean, aren’t we?

JAY: Yes, we are. But he will be fine. He is a big boy.

Bobby was pretty silent during dinner. He was still affected by Jihyo words but the moment he heard Sana, his face was plastered with smiles.

SN: Jihyo ah, accompany me tomorrow. I need to buy some things to decorate Mina’s room. We need to clean it before she comes back next month.

Jihyo smiles when she saw Jiwon’s reaction.

SN: I can’t wait for her to be back. I miss her.

BB: Me too… (He finally said it out loud.) I really miss her so much.

JHO: How come you have never said anything all this while?

BB: What was I supposed to say? She left me. She didn’t even say goodbye to me. But I still yearn for her.

JHO: Why?

BB: I don’t know.

BI: Simply because you are in love with her. You thought she will always be by your side no matter how you screwed up. You thought she will be there forever and that one day when the time is right, you will confess to her. Sadly, your playboy nature was what made the right timing before this never happens.

SN: I agree. You should have seen how disappointed she was when you were busy kissing and ing other people.

BB: That hurts people…

JHO: You shouldn’t expect much that she is coming back. For all you know, she has already given her heart to someone else.

JAY: Jihyo is right, it’s been 4 years. She must have change.

BB: I guess I will have to face reality soon enough.

 

Mina finally steps out at the arrival hall. She was looking around and finally saw the two ladies smiling at her. She quickens her steps and eventually run into their arms. Mina never felt so happy to see Sana and Jihyo.

MN: I miss you guys so much.

SN: Na du…

JHO: You are back for good right?

Mina nodded as she couldn’t help but shed tears being in their arms. Hanbin also reaches out for a hug.

MN: Oppa, been well?

BI: Neh…. So glad to have you back.

Back at the apartment, she could see Sana’s and Jihyo’s effort in decorating the room just the way she likes it. Her boxes have arrived a couple days earlier. She felt happy to be in the room once again. She settles herself on the bed and her hand couldn’t help but graze her fingers on the bedsheet that Sana has put on for her. She misses this bed of hers.

Suddenly she was reminded of her words to Jiwon 4 years ago. She smiles at how strong she was. She couldn’t believe, she actually confessed to him although he was pretending to be asleep at that time. She definitely knows he is aware that she will be home today. She wondered if he even misses her. She shakes off those thoughts before heading to eat her late lunch. She cannot wait to be asleep after the long flight.

After her long shower, she slips into her pyjamas. As she was just about to lock her room, she wondered if he would come and look for her. She thought for a while. She smiles when Jihyo told her about what he said over the phone. She decided not to lock her door. It was only 7 in the evening but the tiredness was overwhelming. She eventually falls in deep slumber.

She smiles as she felt his arms around her waist. Her eyes flutter open. She remembers his scent. Her arm reaches for his face. Her soft fingers traces over his cheeks and lips. She misses him. She misses him a lot.

BB: Did you miss me, Minari? (He finally breaks the silence.)

MN: I thought you would continue to pretend to be sleep like you were 4 years ago. (She sounds him.)

BB: Mianhe…. I should be more honest then. But you have not answered my question.

MN: I did…

BB: Did what?

MN: I miss you. (Mina replied softly as her fingers have shifted and are running though his hair.)

BB: I was so angry at myself when you left.

MN: Why didn’t you attempt to contact me?

BB: I wanted to but that wouldn’t make a difference would it? I want you to achieve your dreams too. Wouldn’t it be too selfish to expect you to stay just because I want you for myself?

MN: At least, we won’t have to wonder about our feelings for 4 years.

BB: I guess but I don’t know. I needed to the time to change and be a better person for you.

MN: If you say so… (She sighs.)

BB: Are you back for good? (He asked carefully as his arms slips away from her waist and his fingers tucking her hair behind her ears.)

MN: Do you want me to be back for good?

BB: Of course, but I don’t know if that is what you want.

MN: I got a teaching position in a prestigious ballet academy here. I just accepted the position. That is why I am back.

Jiwon immediately pulls her close into his arm.

BB: Thank you for coming back to me.

Mina eventually returns the hug before falling back into slumber. When the sun shines in the room, Jiwon still couldn’t believe who was in his arms. He slipped into her room at 3 in the morning. He wanted to come earlier but recording for his artist turn out longer than expected. Their short conversation was enough to keep him awake. His heart couldn’t believe it. Mina grew even prettier these past 4 years. Her long brown hair was smooth as silk. Her skin is fair and dewy. His heart grew even more fond of her when she tosses in bed and ended up wrapping her arms around his body.

BB: Good morning Minari.
