Sunny Movie Review (Korean)

Movie reviews

Korean movie Sunny (2011) is a light hearted campy friendship movie. It shows the journey of a woman looking back on what her life was like back in middle school. We see constant flashbacks in this movie. In the beginning it shows a woman. The woman is a very successful woman. Has a very loving husband and daughter. She's a bit like a mary- sue. But anyways she wants a bit of her past life back. The carefreeness of youth. One day she finds out her friend from middle school is sick. The friend wants to get all the girls together and spend one last time with them. The main character goes on a journey looking for her friends, and we see what their lives have turned out like. She finds them, but right when she finds them her friend has died. Now she has to get them all to her friend's funeral.

Interesting points ( things i noticed/ liked or didn't like)

They made a lot of refrences to girl groups such as Girls Generation. Wonder Girls, Suzy.

The outfits they wore were supposed to represent the 80's but they were more 70's ish

I learned a bit of Korean history in this movie. They talked about the change to/ fight for Democracy.

In my opinion there was a bit of gay subtext in this movie. I'm surprised no one has written about it. I think I might have saw one other person talk about it, but no one else. The main character when she was a young girl. In her young girl mode seemed to be obsessed with this Suji character. She was really obsessed with her wanting to be her friend. It really wasn't normal. She liked her a bit too much. But I don't know maybe that's a korean thing idk. Obsessive friendships to the point of being a relationship. She really could have been like okay fine Suji dosen't want to be friends I'm cool with that but she wasn't.

5/10

This movie was a bit typical. In terms of the way friendship was shown, and portrayed on screen. It isn't anything we haven't seen before, and that's a bit dissapointing. But if you're into friendship films you'll like this. This movie did have a lot of fun and funny situations.

Chapter 1: I liked Sunny a lot, though it's not a movie I'd watch several times it was still a pleasure!
I think the reason why Nami was so obssessed with trying to be friends with Suji too was because of the fear of not being in the group at all if Suji disliked her as if she had the power to kick her out, though I believe there was gay subtext with that girl, Sung Min toward Chunhwa, she was literally ready to hurt Nami because she "stole" Chunhwa from her when in fact she was too blinded that she didn't notied that she was the one who withdrew her friend from herself.
I can't really see how they could have formed the friendship in another way to stand out, I mean it seemed like a normal group of friends, though it was a shame that they only showed the bond from Nami perspective, I mean when I saw the movie I was much more moved over Chunhwa and Nami because they didn't focused much on the other girls and we didn't even get to see how the girls bounded before Nami's arrival especially when Suji was so reserved and barely talked to the other even if she hung out with them.
I was a bit surprised over the reason why the girls split because of Suji's injury/scar, but it showed that even a group of friends with a "strong" bond could lose touch over the years for 'small' things.
