Prologue
Marked
Baekhyun stood on the shore, basking in the pleasant warmth of the morning sun shining down on him. He took in a deep breath, it wasn't everyday he was allowed to go outside. His smile faltered a bit. Looking down on his arms, his eyes traced the thin black lines engraved on his pale skin, covering his body from his collar bones down to his ankles. Another reminder of who he was and who he belonged to.
He sighed, letting the spring breeze ruffle his light hair. He cannot think about this, not right now, at this moment. This was a rare occurrence; being able to breathe the fresh air and listen to the rushing sound of waves reaching and washing over the sandy shores. He loved this. Everything was so peaceful, so silent. There was no one around him telling him what to do, he wasn't suffocated by the confines of his own room. Baekhyun was outside and after a very long time he felt free. The thought made him smile wider, brighter.
He turned his head around looking back at the castle. The sandstone seemed to glow in the morning light, casting dark shadows over the high wall that surrounded the fortress. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Baekhyun knew that the castle was known for its breathtaking architecture and famous halls that have been occupied by royal families since forever, visited by merchants and travelers from across the kingdom, but to him, it looked like a golden cage, a prison he had no chance to escape.
And as he watched the spectacular sight in front of him, something in his head clicked and his lips turned into a frown. Why was it so quiet? The Golden castle was a rowdy place, the streets full of markets and traders with dozens of ships anchored in the docks. However, today, there was this strange stillness to the place.
Sudden shiver ran through Baekhyun's spine. He turned back towards the horizon and he felt fear gripping at his insides, twisting them painfully. The sun was no longer there. Instead, the sky darkened and he was looking up at the moon, colored in crimson red. His feet were no longer buried in the warm sand, no, now he was standing on a thin layer of ice. He looked around, realizing he was standing in the middle of a frozen lake, surrounded by hundreds of trees.
And then he heard it...
Baekhyun
Someone was calling his name. The voice was full of urgency.
Baekhyun exhaled and watched the steam leaving his lips, feeling a slight tug at his heart. Until now, he was oblivious to how freezing cold his surroundings were. Baekhyun hated cold. It brought back memories he wasn't fond of.
Baekhyun give me your hand!
He didn't know to who the voice belonged to, yet, he really longed to do exactly that. Just turn around and extend his hand. The tugging in his chest became stronger and Baekhyun fought with all of his might but it was useless. He turned around, facing the stranger, only able to outline a tall shadow standing a few meters away from him.
His next words surprised even himself. It was like he had no power over his own mind and body. "You don't understand. I have to do this. I've seen this before."
With that he stepped back and loud crack echoed across the silent lake. The solid surface under his feet disappeared and Baekhyun found himself plummeting into the darkness. The icy water filled his mouth and it felt like thousands of tiny needles were prickling his body all over. It was so cold that he believed his heart stopped beating almost immediately.
And then everything went black.
