A day at a Funeral With My Brother Ong

A day at a funeral with my brother Ong

It all started on a rainy day. My grandfather got a call a few days ago from his brother warning that his older sister had passed away, so he asked me his granddaughter and my brother to pay our respects to his side of the family even though we don’t really know them very well.

You’re also probably wondering why he didn’t ask my parents to go and also pay their respects, right? Well that’s easy, my dad holds grudges. He doesn’t associate with any member of the family.

Also, if my dad doesn’t go that means my mom also doesn’t go.

Out of respect my brother Ong Seong-wu, decided to also go. Has he ever been to a funeral before? No.

My brother himself is like a comedian, he never fails to bring laughter to the house although he has a really bad point, which is extremely bad timing. Like, he’ll make a joke at a time and place that he shouldn’t. If you get what I mean.

“Yuri! Let’s go!” My grandma called from the 1st floor of the house as I was just finishing touching up my makeup.

“Ong! Are you ready we have to go” I warned my brother as he appeared all in black in tight jeans with a hoodie and long coat over it.

“How do I look?” Ong smiled showing off his fashion sense.

“It’s a funeral not a fashion show” I retorted as I rolled my eyes at brother. Can I really bring him along?

“Pshh... Let’s go” He hissed as he went down the staircase and got into the car and sat in the front next to me as I started the engine.

“Grandpa did grandma bring the flowers?” i asked as he looked at his wife and asked her the same question really close to her ear since she’s slightly deaf.

“It’s in the trunk” She responded.

“Ok, then we’re good to go.” I mumbled as I left the house and drove to the chapel where my grandpa’s deceased sister was.

“We’ve arrived” I warned them as I parked the car. You could see that my grandpa was with a very sad expression.

“Ong, grab the flowers” Grandma asked him since she favors him.

“And he opened the trunk to grab the flowers as I quickly changed my sneakers and put on my black high heels since I have a habit of driving with only sneakers.

I locked the car and there we started walking towards the chapel where you could already see there were a lot of people.

“Waah. Almost everyone of the family is here” Ong commented.

“Normal” I rolled my eyes.

“Even people who didn’t like her are here” and he started chuckling.

“At least their paying their respects unlike your parents” My grandfather threw a side comment.

“Harsh” Ong gave me a weird smile.

“Ong when you go in there behave” I looked at him with a dead serious expression.

“Don’t worry” He reassured me as I looked at him wondering if he really is going to contain himself. Please god let him not say anything stupid from the beginning of the funeral to the end.

“Hey... everyone’s expression looks very dead” Ong spoke without thinking and I pinched his arm which gained him a slight pain as my grandpa himself eyed him and cleared his throat as he got closer to the coffin where his sister was lying down peacefully.

“She looks like she’s sleeping” I thought to myself as I looked at her. She was wearing a black dress with a vail over her head.

“Ong... place the flowers next to her” Grandpa asked of him as my grandma went to sit and comfort the family.

“Why is she wearing black?” Ong commented as my grandpa then answered “Cause it’s probably what she wanted to wear when her time had come”

“They could have at least put some colourful clothes on her. It would have made her look more alive” Which made me eye him and face palm myself. Are they really having this conversation?!

My grandpa just went quiet and I just grabbed my brothers wrest and whispered “You and I are going to sit down and give them some alone time”

And so I sat down on the bench of the chapel next to an old man and Ong sat next to me. Not even half an hour had passed and he looked at me and out of nowhere “Yuri I’m hungry”

What is wrong with him?!

“Now is not the time Ong” and I felt the old man next to us eye us with a very displeased look on his face.

“Grandpa can i get some money to go eat something? I’m hungry” He asked him as he got up from the bench while I couldn’t help but look at him dumbfounded.

“Yuri take your brother to the coffee shop” He asked me as he passed him the money.

“Let’s go” that idiot brother of mine said with a victorious smile as we were walking out of the chapel. This heartless brother!

“I cannot believe we’re sitting here having a coffee while a deceased family member of ours is standing in that chapel” I couldn’t help but comment at the absurd situation as we stared out the window and looked at church.

“I know right? But she’s not really standing she’s lying down Yuri” And he began chuckling which started to make me laugh and feel irritated at the same time cause he looks so funny right now but at the same time we shouldn’t really be laughing.

And next thing you know he starts cracking up a bunch of jokes which made me burst in to an uncontrollable laughter until my phone began ringing.

“Come back here. Their going to bury her soon” My grandpa warned over the phone as I replied “Arasso (okay).”

“We have to go” I continued laughing as I warned him and the both us went giggling all the way to the church.

“Okay” I took a deep breather and contained my laughter as we walked in and sat on the bench. But Ong just simply kept making these funny faces and the jokes he had made before kept rewinding in my head which made me strongly want to giggle.

I swallowed my laugher and told my brother “I’m sitting further away from you because you don’t know how to behave”

A deceased person is here and here I am giggling away because of this retard.

And then next thing you know my brother and I made I contact and we ended up bursting into silent laughter.

“This is so humiliating!” I thought to myself as I decided to escape and face the wall so that nobody would notice I’m actually laughing while my brother covered his face with his palms to also hide it. And the most unbelievable thing happened.

“Young man you don’t need to cry so hard” The old man that was sitting next to us before on the bench ‘comforted’ my brother as he placed his hand on his shoulder.

And Ong not wanting to get caught actually slightly changed his voice and responded “It’s just so sad”

What just happened!? My brain froze as i held my giggle and witnessed the whole scenario.

“Since you show so much respect towards my wife I would like to ask you if you’re willing to help carry the coffin” He suggested as Ong just nodded and wiped  his tears away.

Those were tears of laughter not sadness!

“You’re grandson will help carry my wife” The man told my grandpa as he looked at my brother with a thank you expression.

As Ong placed himself next to other men and slowly placed the coffin over their shoulders and began walking out of the room, he suddenly gave me this really evil and yet naughty expression as if had just won a trophy.

“That child must be satan” I mumbled underneath my breath as I just stared at him not knowing how to react to this.

“Let’s go Yuri” Grandma locked arms with me.

“You also looked very sad a moment ago” She commented as I couldn’t answer and didn’t exactly want to tell her I was actually laughing.

Everyone walked to the burial area and surrounded it.

"We may begin” The man said as he signalled for them to bring the coffin down. The moment he said that somebody slipped and the coffin tilted which made my mouth make an O shape. Poor woman must’ve hit her head in that coffin for that mistake.

Next thing you know some random person threw a white flower out of nowhere towards the coffin which slightly hit my brothers face and push an expensive pair of glasses out of the head of the dude that next to him and make it fall into the burial hole.

“Wait! Bring the coffin up!” That man suddenly shouted and jumped in the hole and picked up his glasses.

“Got it” He waved them up in the air and jumped out.

“This is just one thing after the next” i couldn’t help but mutter.

By the time the funeral ended and we sat in the car I just looked at Ong not knowing what to say.

“Did you see that dude? He actually interrupted the burial because of the glasses” He burst in to laughter as my grandpa slapped him one across the back of the head.

“That’s not something to make fun of” and my grandpa went quiet.

“Just know this...” I started the engine getting ready to go back home “I’m never bringing you to a funeral again”and we drove back home.

THE END.
