The Investigation Begins

What are You Two Exactly?

A/N: You guys probably hate me right now. I'm really sorry from the bottom of my heart that this, this fic just uploaded today. But as what as I had promised, I'll post it after two weeks. And I'm a day late, I don't know if it sounds funny as it does in the back of my head, but okay, nevermind me ranting. Let's just proceed with another dose of YeonCy/NanWoo.

Enjoy!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

When Jooe opens the fridge, she was greeted by the cold whiff gracing her face that earned a smile from the blonde girl.

Sometimes, it’s great to have the dorm all to yourself, especially when you’re feeling hungry and the members are nowhere in sight. Most of the girls went out, leaving her and Yeonwoo only in their dorm. Jooe knows that Yeonwoo is still asleep and she just lets her unnie catch up some rest. Day offs are pretty rare nowadays, especially when idols are getting big.

Her eyes then trail at the contents of the fridge but groans when she realizes that all of their dessert has magically disappeared, and by magically disappeared meaning Ahin ate all of them.

“Seriously Ahin.” Jooe sighs and closes the fridge. She thinks for a moment and remembers that they store some snacks in one of the shelves.

Jooe hurriedly pulls out a chair underneath the table and mounts on it to reach something at the top shelf. When she feels something bulky and hears some sort of a cracking sound, she pulls it out and smiled at the snack on her hands. Jooe then hops down and makes her way to the living room, not minding to return the chair to its original place.

She drops herself on the lone bean bag of the room and opens the television. She’s having a good rest so far, getting more comfortable as minutes go by. But her bliss is somewhat challenged by how stubborn the bag of chips is. She almost thinks that it is made out of nylon because she can’t even rip it off the slightest.

A door was heard open from the hallway, followed by light footsteps coming her way. Jooe knows who that is.

“Good morning Jooe-ah.” Yeonwoo greets, her voice thick with sleep as she shuffles her way towards a couch, stifling a long yawn as she does.

“Good morning unnie.” Jooe politely replies without looking up. Her attention is still on her fingers fiddling the bag of chips open. She doesn’t realize that she actually greeted her unnie the same statement back even though she knows it was like, 1:00 in the afternoon. She is too caught up glaring at her little activity.

“Ah jinja,” Yeonwoo blinks at the screen, her eyebrows furrowing as she sees the time on her phone. “Did I really sleep throughout the morning?”

“Yeah, you seem pretty tired unnie.” Jooe says, now smiling somewhat victoriously. She just succeeded on ripping the bag off and immediately plopped a chip to , her face lighting up in delight.

“Why didn’t you guys wake me up?” Yeonwoo asks, but then pauses like she’s trying to remember something. “Omo, shouldn’t it be my turn to do the groceries?”

At the sound of her voice, Jooe casts a look on the couch where the older girl is sitting. As she sees the guilt on Yeonwoo’s face, she almost chokes back on the food and hastily waved both her hands at her, making the bag she holds shake.

“No no, it’s okay unnie.” Jooe chuckles, “Hyebin-unnie, Daisy and Nancy decided to do it instead. They were all willing so it’s no problem, really. They understand.”

The frown didn’t leave Yeonwoo’s mouth.

“It’s kind of unfair for Daisy and Nancy to take my place. Daisy should’ve woken me up. That girl has a lot of quirks in her sleeve. I doubt I’ll even stay asleep if she pulls something on me.”

Jooe suddenly laughs that made Yeonwoo look at her with a face of confusion and amusement.

“Don’t worry unnie. I doubt Daisy will do it. She’s being guarded pretty heavily when she attempted to make a knock in your room.”

Yeonwoo looks at her with complete confusion now. “Why?”

“Nancy practically blocked her way and drag her out of the doorstep. She said that she shouldn’t wake you up and that the both of them will just accompany Hyebin-unnie instead. It was kind of funny though when Daisy was non-stop complaining and Nancy was like, straight out ignoring her.”

Yeonwoo’s laughter rings inside the living room. Jooe couldn’t help but snicker as well when she recalls that memory. A thought seems to have passed on Jooe when she places a finger against her chin.

“Which reminds me though. That’s why I didn’t wake you up because maknae might end me when she gets home.”

Yeonwoo’s laugh doubles. “Nancy said that?”

Jooe nods, silently noting how amused and slightly fond Yeonwoo sounds. She then thinks that the word slightly doesn’t do justice at that tone just now. If anything, it should be flooding with exuberance like very, tremendously, or something of the sort. Like, half-amused and three-fourths fond. It doesn’t even equate to a hundred percent but oh well, she’s pretty sure that only a deaf person wouldn’t recognize that kind of tone. The meaning behind that tone. Which reminds her though...

“Jooe?”

Jooe splutters almost dumbly. “Wha—? Sorry unnie, did you say something?”

“I asked if you know when they will come back.”

Jooe thinks for a moment. “Maybe a little later, unnie.”

“Okay then, thanks Jooe-ah.”

“Sure unnie.”

“And yah. Why were you zoning out by the way? That’s so not you. Were you thinking about anything?”

Jooe stares at her blankly.

I was actually starting to think how you and Nancy are extra hella sweet these days. I’m even branding myself as fan of you two now. Details would be nice.

But of course, Jooe keeps that thought to herself. Instead, she nervously laughs and waves her hand dismissively.

“Oh nothing unnie. Sometimes, I forget to swallow my energy pill on breaks like these, you know? This bag of chips is quite a good alternative.”

Yeonwoo only laughs and shakes her head before returning to her phone. A sound of a Japanese dub is coming out of the device and Jooe thinks that she might be watching anime again. She averts her attention back to the long-forgotten television and continues to munch on her delightful snack. She was about to stand up to get some more snacks when she hears the front door open.

“-told you I don’t want anything spicy! Why did you buy Samyang instead of those instant ramen?”

“It’s a gift unnie! Don’t you like it?”

“Yeah unnie, you said it yourself. You like anything that is spicy.”

“You two are unbelievable. I’m not taking you both to the groceries with me again.”

Jooe relaxes herself on the chair again when she hears those familiar voices not too far away. She decided to just order Daisy later once they reach the living room. She doesn’t really have the will to get up now and it requires too much effort to walk towards the kitchen, even though it’s just right behind her. The sound of footsteps are becoming louder and louder and one by one, the trio starts to file in the living room, holding their share of grocery bags.

“Oh good you’re all back.” Jooe beams at them.

Nancy is also beaming, but unfortunately not at Jooe.

“Yeonwoo-unnie!”

The blonde girl stared at Nancy in disbelief. “Well ‘hi’ to you too Nancy.”

Nancy seems to not have heard her, or chooses not to, as she dashes her way across the room, bags already discarded on the floor, and towards the girl who was slouching comfortably on the couch. Jooe turns to look at Yeonwoo and sees a soft smile playing on her lips. The smile on is one thing, but the smile reflecting in her eyes is something else. It momentarily blinded Jooe with its brightness.

She takes the moment to observe them.

“Hey there.” Yeonwoo grins and lifts one arm, as if already expecting the incoming girl to tackle her with a hug. She is not wrong though. Nancy closes the distance between them by wrapping her arms tightly around the girl, more specifically, around her waist. Nancy smiled brightly at Yeonwoo like she’s the greatest thing ever and Yeonwoo smiled back, securing the younger girl with an arm around her shoulders.

“You miss me this much?”

“Yeah, you slept like a log but I know we shouldn’t wake you up.”

“And by ‘we’ you mean YOU threatening US not to?” Daisy quips in.

Nancy glares at the girl. “I did not threaten you.”

“Sure you haven’t honey.”

“Hey stop it you two,” Yeonwoo butts in. “It’s actually fine if one of you woke me up, or not. Either way it’s fine.”

“But you were really tired.” Nancy frowns.

“I had a good rest last night.”

“But—“

Nancy swallowed what was left of her sentence when Yeonwoo suddenly leaned in and gave a small peck on the crown of her head.

“Yah, I’m fine, okay? I have you now, this is a lot better than sleep.” Yeonwoo smiles tenderly, but it soon breaks into a grin when she saw how Nancy ducks her head to cover the pink stain on her cheeks.

“Okay, I think me and Hyebin-unnie bought enough sweets for the nine of us,” Daisy has this incredulous look that makes Jooe want to snort. “We don’t need more of it thank you very much.” The girl playfully closes her eyes as she proceeds to walk pass the living room and into the kitchen.

How she managed to dodge any furniture coming her way is beyond Jooe.

“Ow!”

Okay maybe she should’ve returned the chair underneath the table.

“I really don’t want diabetes to be the cause of my death either.” Hyebin agrees, trailing behind Daisy.

“What? Aren’t we allowed to have some sisterly bonding?” Yeonwoo rolls her eyes, her voice laced with humor rather than annoyance.

“No no no. It’s totally fine unnie.” Daisy shouts from the kitchen. “You two just keep doing that sisterly bonding of yours and Duble Kick might officially declare your ship name on public.”

Hyebin snickers and Jooe exploded in laughter.

“Was that NanWoo or something?” Daisy wonders.

“I bet it was YeonCy, or both, who knows?” Jooe joins in.

The two shares a good laugh but were soon silenced when Yeonwoo glares at them.

“Well, I’m heading to my room. Just call me up if the dorm’s a wreck or something.” Hyebin waves off, leaving the four girls in the living room.

Jooe casts her eyes down and realized that she has already emptied the crumpled bag of chips. She looks up, meaning to find Daisy for more food, but her eyes somehow rebelled against her as they linger at the two people on the couch.

Just like earlier, the two are still on the same position but with Nancy now joining Yeonwoo at her little anime marathon. The younger girl looks explicitly in wonder while Yeonwoo just has this calm look whenever she watches anime. It’s nothing special, really. Just two of her sisters sharing an intimate time. They all do that once in a while, fan service or not. But Jooe couldn’t help but feel that there’s something more that adds up to Nancy and Yeonwoo’s interaction. Some vibe that you couldn’t get from others whenever they interact. It’s hard to put a finger on it but Jooe knows that it’s not something they all share. It’s something the both of them only has.

And not to mention how Yeonwoo affectionately rubs her thumb against Nancy’s shoulder... Jooe strains her eyes away from them. No really, she really just wants to find Daisy. Speaking of Daisy.

“Yah, where do we put the laundry soap again?” Daisy calls out from where she is.

A lightbulb flashes on top of Jooe’s head and she smirks. She jumps out of the bean bag and walks towards the kitchen and then to Daisy who was busy pulling out items from the bags.

“Daisy-ah! Have you bought ice cream?” Jooe randomly asks.

“Uh, I think we bought two tubs, but I’m not quite sure.” Daisy scratches her head, slightly taken aback by the answer. How is laundry soap related to ice cream?

“Oh no you forgot!”

Daisy looks at Jooe like she grew two heads. Something is definitely up because there is nothing more obvious than how exaggerated and comical Jooe sounds. Before Daisy can vent another remark, she almost jumps back when Jooe suddenly crouched down with her, her eyes intense and determined.

“Okay, if this is about the hair dye prank, I swear it was Ahin wh—“

“Shush and listen!” Jooe hissed, hoping not to be heard by the other two.

“What are you doing?” Daisy unconsciously lowered her voice as well.

“Are you curious with what’s going on with Nancy and Yeonwoo-unnie these days?”

“What?”

“Oh come on, don’t tell me you haven’t noticed.”

“Noticed wha— oh. Ohhhhh.”

Jooe is tempted to smack the other girl. Sometimes, Daisy’s pretty dense with serious things but the complete opposite when she jokes around. Jooe doesn’t even know if that’s possible. Leave that to Daisy, I guess.

“Yeah, that one.” Jooe rolls her eyes.

“Sorry didn’t caught up with that for a moment.” Daisy deadpans.

“You were practically joking about it earlier!”

“That one’s different. I guess. I don’t know. Wait, what’s all this about again?”

Jooe tries not to make an eye roll again. “I’m curious, and judging by how you constantly tease them, you are too.”

“As a matter of fact, I kind of am.”

Jooe smirks knowingly. “I know you are. Anyway, I really have this weird idea but I can tell it will be fun.”

Daisy quirks up. “What is it?”

“I call this, Mission: Investigate Gayness.”

A loud snort came out of Daisy and Jooe has to cover with her hand to smother her cackle. After her laughter died down, Daisy puts her hand over Jooe’s and pulls it out of .

“Jooe-ah, you are soooooo lame.”

Jooe glares at the girl but decided to ignore her comment.

“Just follow my lead. I can already tell that this plan is foolproof, given how Nancy is so smitten over Yeonwoo-unnie.”

“So basically, we should just spy on them?”

“I like how you’re finally catching up!”

Daisy rolls her eyes. “But how do we do that though?”

“Watch and learn hoobae.”

Jooe stands up without forgetting to sneak some bag of chips from the bag. She opens it easily now and walks back to the living room, reaching to her usual place and flops down.

“Did you help Daisy with the groceries Jooe-ah?” Yeonwoo asks, looking up.

“Sort of unnie,” Jooe isn’t completely lying though. “But we have some sort of situation though.”

“What is it?” It was Nancy this time who asked.

Jooe sighs rather dramatically, and she can hear the faint snicker of Daisy from behind.

“We’re out of ice cream.”

“Ice cream?” The visuals ask in unison.

“Yes!”

The visuals jump back at the volume.

“We can’t have not having ice cream! It’s what keeps us together.” Jooe suddenly points an accusing finger at Yeonwoo. “Yeonwoo-unnie!”

Yeonwoo blinks at her. “Y-yes?”

“You like ice cream don’t you?! I know you were craving for it!”

“Yeah, but it’s okay if we’re out of sto—“

“Nancy! Are you willing to let Yeonwoo-unnie starve from her period?!”

Nancy suddenly sits up straight, concern written on her face. “Of course I don’t. But Daisy, didn’t we buy some of it earlier?”

“No baby maknae, we forgot and left it in the freezer.” Daisy says apologetically. Jooe reminds herself to thank Daisy later.

“Do you really want some ice cream, Yeonnie?” Nancy asks softly now.

Two eyebrows were raised, one from Jooe and the other from Daisy. Yeonnie? They mentally shake their head. Nah, maybe it was just unnie. Nancy sometimes mispronounce her Korean.

“I’d love some but it’s okay, I can have it tomorrow if you’re tired.” Yeonwoo says, running a hand on Nancy’s dark locks.

“No, we can have some today,” Nancy smiles, “We don’t usually have some free time and now’s our chance.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Yeonwoo smiles, brushing a stray hair out of Nancy’s eyes. “Okay, let’s finish this episode first before going out.”

And the two were back to their own world again. Jooe couldn’t help but applause herself for the job well done. She turns around and saw that Daisy has her back facing towards her, busy putting something on the shelf. Too bad she didn’t see her success.

“Daisy?” Jooe calls out, munching on her chips loudly.

Yeah?” She just entered the room after stacking everything in the kitchen, and plops down besides the blonde girl.

“Look.”

Intrigued, the rapper follows her gaze and saw the two visuals, cuddling. Daisy raises a questioning brow.

“Seems like they haven’t moved an inch, you sure this is foolproof?” Daisy whispers.

“Just wait and see.”

“Alright, that seriously caught me by surprise. How did he just die? He’s like, the greatest human being out there!” Nancy sounds exasperated as she throws her hands in the air.

Yeonwoo laughs. “Welcome to anime world.”

“I really should get some ice cream.”

“Yeah, we should. But let me get changed first. I don’t think PJs is the right outfit, come on.”

Yeonwoo stood up and reaches her hand out for Nancy, to which the other girl held it willingly.

“You can continue that rant in my room.” Yeonwoo smirks and pulls Nancy along with her.

The other two simply watch the two retreating figures until they disappeared into the hallway.

Daisy turned to Jooe. “Woah, is it just me or the temperature suddenly went high?”

“You can say that again.” Jooe nods, releasing her hold on the crumpled snack, not realizing that she was clutching it with more force than needed.

Jooe then turns to Daisy with an alarming glint in her eyes. “Mission: Investigate Gayness commence?”

Daisy returns the glint with equal mischief. “Commence.”

And two devious smirks were formed.

x

“What the heck!” Jooe looks mortified when she saw Daisy. “I said blend in, not the opposite of blending in!”

Daisy pouts. It should look cute, but given how a fake plastic mustache and round spectacles are plastered on her face, it defies the intended effect. “What? This is what Yeonwoo-unnie wore when we filmed Bboom Bboom. I swear I did not recognize her by then.”

“Daisy. Just—please, get that off from you face.” Jooe is now rubbing her temples.

“Hm. Your lost then.” Daisy shrugs but did what Jooe told her. She placed it inside her bag and pulls the hood over her head, face free from the toy. “Better?”

“Yeah.” Jooe says, adjusting the cap on her head.

“So, they left a couple of minutes earlier and we didn’t even ask them where they’ll go. What’s your plan Sherlock?”

“Knowing Yeonwoo-unnie, she likes that ice cream parlour just across the park. Maybe they went there.”

“There’s no guarantee but at least it’s better than nothing.”

Jooe nods. “Come on.”

When the pair arrived at their destination, they were thankful that they spotted two familiar faces even though they were hindered by sunglasses and caps. But they know still, it takes one to know one after all. Suddenly, the other pair turns on their heels and walks to the direction where Jooe and Daisy are standing at. Jooe panics for a moment and whips her head back and forth to spot some clearing. She quickly pulls Daisy by the arm and drags her out towards the other entrance of the parlour.

Jooe sighs in relief. “That was close.”

“As close as your grip on my arm.” Daisy grumbles, massaging the part where Jooe grabbed.

“Look, they just sat out there. Good thing they didn’t leave.” Jooe ignores the accusation as she fixes her gaze on two girls laughing outside.

“Can we also buy ice cream then?” Daisy turns to look at Jooe expectantly.

“I can’t see why not.”

And two Sherlocks also went to the counter to order their own food. They situated themselves inside the cafe where they can still see the duo; not too near to have the risk at getting caught, yet not too far also to have their visions obscured.

Jooe is liking how their mission is going. She now spectates Yeonwoo moving out of her chair and dragging it to set beside Nancy. She sits back down and gave Nancy an innocent smile, but the glimmer in her eyes are not so innocent. Jooe raises a brow at that. What’s going on?

Just as she processes everything, she almost chokes back on an ice cream when Yeonwoo leans in to Nancy’s ear, seemingly trying to whsiper something. By the time Yeonwoo leaned back with a rather smug smile, Jooe takes note on how Nancy’s face is furiously flushing and hits the other girl on the arm, earning a laugh from Yeonwoo. Times like these that Jooe wishes she has this spy equipment where you can hear what your target is blabbering about.

It was all going too well really, but Jooe can’t help but notice how a kid across them is staring at her for the pass 5 minutes. No, not staring at her, but them. She and Daisy. Oh no. Does the kid recognize who they are? This is bad. He’s going to blow their cover. And if he does, fans will flock around them and the company might find out. Or worse, Hyebin will beat the light out of them. She has to warn Daisy and have no choice but to abort the mission.

“Daisy-ah, I thin—“

WHAT THE HELL.

Jooe almost falls over. She now knows why the boy is staring at them because Daisy unashamedly returned the fake moustache and round spectacles back on her face while donning a serious expression that doesn’t really help her case.

Jooe wrenches her hoodie towards her.

“What the hell are you doing?!” She hissed.

Daisy blinks at her. “Blending in.”

“This is not blending in! Have you seen that kid looking at you?!“

“I thought he was liking it. I even put a serious face on.”

“That doesn’t help! You’re going to attract attention. Get it off right n—“

“Jooe-ah? Daisy-ah?”

Jooe freezes at the voice. We’re dead. Slowly, she releases her hold on Daisy’s hoodie and glances at the other girl who seems as tense as her. She reluctantly turns her face to expect and greet a glowering Yeonwoo, as well as a dark Nancy Jewel McDonie. But that wasn’t what she saw though. Instead, she was greeted by a confuse yet calm Yeonwoo and a curious Nancy.

“Hey Yeonwoo-unnie, Nancy.” Jooe tries her hardest not to stammer, but she’s not sure if she did well.

“What are you guys doing here?” Yeonwoo asks.

“We-.. We were just— We went out for ice cream.”

“Oh? You two should’ve went with us together then.”

“No, we’re fine unnie.” Daisy this time, speaks in. “We don’t want to disturb anything.”

Nancy tilts her head to the side. “Disturb? Why would it be a disturbance?”

“Because you guys are... dating?” Daisy miserablly slipped. Jooe badly wants to stick her forehead with an ice cream.

Nancy and Yeonwoo shared a look, before both of them breaks into a knowing smile. Jooe and Daisy also exchanged looks, but theirs are with creased eyebrows. Yeonwoo then turns around and faces the other two, smiling.

“You guys finish with your meals? Me and Nancy would like to talk with you on something.”

x

“So, you want us to ask about anything?” Daisy repeats.

“Anything.” Yeonwoo’s encouraging smile still hasn’t faltered since the parlour.

They are now back at the dorm and the four of them have settled once again in the living room, cramped in one couch.

Jooe is hesitant for a moment. She didn’t expect this to be easy yet hard at the same time. What she had in her mind back then was to secretly gather evidences if her theory is true. But now that it’s right in front of her, feeding her, she feels weird, and a little bit guilty. She should’ve not meddled with their business in the first place. It feels like she’s violating something and it just makes her feel awful.

Jooe snaps her head back to reality when she feels a hand over hers. It was Nancy’s. She looks up and saw the younger girl smiling the same smile as Yeonwoo’s. It warms Jooe’s heart. She has great sisters.

With the encouragement from the both of them, Jooe feels like there’s nothing to be ashamed of. She inhales deeply, and decided to ask the question that was bothering her for weeks.

“Yeonwoo-unnie, Nancy,” Jooe starts carefully, “What are you two exactly?”

The smile from the people in question only broadens.

x

BONUS SCENE:

“You think we should tell the others also?” A high-pitched voice echoed inside Yeonwoo’s room. Nancy dropped herself aimlessly at Yeonwoo’s bed, hair sprawled out messily like a beautiful lake. She reaches out for the teddy bear she got for Yeonwoo on Christmas and fiddled with it.

“Yeah. I think it’s about time.” Yeonwoo replies, her back facing the younger girl as she opens a cabinet.

“Looks like Daisy and Jooe have taken it pretty well.”

A laugh was heard. “Too well if you ask me.”

Nancy couldn’t help but agree, a smile threatening to creep on her face. She remembers how the two sat silently for about a minute, internalizing the news to their thick brains. It almost made Nancy nervous when they haven’t elicited any reactions for the pass minute, but soon lets out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding when the two jumps in exhilaration.

Yes, they were happy about the confession. Too happy even. There was nothing but support and love given earlier to the both of them. It gives an unexplained warmth to Nancy’s chest. She loves her sisters.

“Deep in thought again?” A husky voice speaks, and Nancy strains her eyes to look at the owner coming towards her. Yeonwoo has already changed to one of her oversized t-shirts.

“Not really. I’m just happy how those two handled it.” Nancy smiles.

“That’s Jooe and Daisy, how can we ever expect less from them?”

Nancy laughs at that. “That’s true.”

She feels the bed sinking in the added weight and finds Yeonwoo sitting beside her.

“When do you want to tell them?” Yeonwoo asks softly, as if the answer from the other girl is gravely important to her. It is though.

Nancy almost feels drowsy on how Yeonwoo plays with her messy hair. Gosh she loves it when she does that.

“Tonight’s dinner sounds good to me.” Nancy suggests.

“Yeah, I think tonight’s dessert will be as good too.” Yeonwoo also added, but with a rather different suggestion.

“Yah, Lee Dabin!”

Yeonwoo laughs her trademark laugh again and moves to hover over the girl, her hair framing them like dark curtains. She gives the sweetest smile that is only meant for Nancy’s eyes and Nancy’s alone. Fans die over Yeonwoo’s smiles and Nancy wonders how they would’ve react if they see this one.

“You wouldn’t be nervous about it though, right?” Yeonwoo asks, her voice now tinted with concern as well as her face.

“Of course I wouldn’t.”

“Are you sure? We can always...”

“Dabin.” Nancy cuts her off, eyes determined and affectionate. “I’m sure, okay?”

And the smile is back at Yeonwoo’s face again. Just how Nancy loves it.

“I love it how you say my name like that.”

“What? You mean Da—“

The remaining words never left Nancy’s mouth when Yeonwoo closes the distance between their lips. Nancy smiled against the other girl’s mouth, thinking how Yeonwoo might also love this too, just as how she loves when she says her name.

Well, maybe even more.
