Chapter 1

Love&Up

“Yves unnie, wait up!” Chuu shouted cutely as she ran to catch up to her friend. “You walk too slow.” Yves responded casually while showing no intention of slowing down. They were walking across a rather dense forest to carriages that would take them to BlockBerry Academy for Girls, a very historically significant school for teenagers like Yves and Chuu. A few out of breath Chuus later, they arrived. “Woah, amazing. There all so vintage!” Gushed Chuu as they goggled at the beautiful horse drawn carriages awaiting the arrival of incoming students. “Come on!” Yves exclaimed excitedly and reached for Chuu’s hand. Chuu’s face grew slightly pink and she shyly put her hand in Yves’. They ran up to an empty carriage, the coach climbed gracefully down and helped them in. Yves and Chuu were still trembling with excitement when a second pair of girls accompanied them. Both had long, dark hair like Yves, and were very pretty. After the two girls and Yves and Chuu bowed to each other, they introduced themselves. “Hi, I’m Heejin. Nice to meet you.” Said the first girl, and the other’s name was Hyunjin. Yves and Chuu introduced themselves and they sat together in silence until their Coach opened their door. “We will now start leaving for BlockBerry. Please wait patiently for our arrival.” The gentle rocking and the sound of the horses hooves on the the stone path seemed to break the previous tension between the group of girls. “I can’t believe this is actually happening, I never thought I was going to be accepted!” Heejin told the others. Getting into BlockBerry was extremely competitive, the application process was very difficult and only a few a year were given a scholarship. “Are you two on a scholarship?” Asked Yves. “Yes, both of us are. We heard that only ten others were given ones.” Hyunjin answered. “Make that eight, Chuu and I also received scholarships.” “Wow, what’s the chance that all four of us are on this carriage together?” Heejin pondered. “Wait Unnie, didn’t Go Won get a scholarship as well?” Chuu asked Yves. “Oh yeah!” Yves responded. “Go Won is a friend of ours. She’s very humble, she doesn’t talk about that kind of stuff much.” Chuu explained to Heejin and Hyunjin. “And you didn’t arrive with her?” Asked Heejin. “No, she lives farther from here than we do. Plus, her parents had insisted on seeing her off.” Hyunjin and Heejin nodded and a comfortable quietness fell over the carriage. Each girl seemed to be focusing on the movement of the trees in the humid, August air. Darkness had started to intrude on the previously azure sky when the carriage finally came to a halt. The coach assisted on the handling of their baggage as they climbed out of the carriage and made their way to the entrance of the school with the crowd of first years. Yves and Chuu craned their necks around to try and find their friend, Go Won. Chuu found her much further back then they were, so they pushed through everyone to get to her. “Go Won-ah!” Chuu cried and squeezed Go Won with all her might. Go Won had not noticed them until Chuu hugged her, so she was quite surprised. “Oh my god you guys scared me.” Go Won gasped breathlessly, both from surprise and Chuu’s back-breaking embrace. The trio then turned their attention to the large gothic, castle-like school. There were beautiful stained glass windows decorated with birds and other beautiful creatures. It looked even larger and more breathtaking in person. The thought of having to get to their classes everyday made the girls dizzy. Go Won noticed that the doors had started to open and students were filing in. “Look, let’s go.” Go Won said, bringing Chuu and Yves out of their thoughts. The girls slowly made their way towards the door. Once inside, the students were greeted with tables and tables of delicious food and the Dean standing on a podium in front of them. “Hello, everyone! Please have a seat at the tables.” He announced. After everyone had taken a seat, the Dean continued. “How are you all this fine evening?” He asked. “Good!” The student body rang out. “The second, third, and fourth years have already arrived and eaten, so this food is all for you tonight.” He smiled genuinely, “I want to make this speech short and sweet. I’ll try my best so stay with me here.” He said and many smiles erupted in the room. This was surely not what the first years had been expecting. They had assumed that the Dean would be a very old man who spoke like he had just walked out of history textbook, but he didn’t look a day older than fifty and talked quite casually. “BlockBerry Academy has helped many young women like you find their place in the world, and I truly believe you will find yours as well. There will be a lot of hard work involved in order to stay here… especially those of you on a scholarship.” The Dean said sternly. Chuu and Yves glanced at Heejin and Hyunjin who looked as nervous as they felt. “All that I ask of each and every one of you is to try your best, obey your teachers, and always do what you feel is the right thing. No matter what people tell you, you have control of your own destiny.” He continued intensely. He let his words sink in and suddenly smiled at the audience. “Well, enjoy your year at BlockBerry Academy, hopefully I won’t see you in my office. Good night.” He finished abruptly and left the podium. “Ok then…” Yves said, looking puzzled. “I’m not so sure I’m hungry anymore.” Go Won added anxiously, biting her lip
